This paper aims at gaining an insight into the PM10 daily threshold (50 micro g/m3) exceedances measured by French regional air quality monitoring networks for the last four years. As almost three quarter of these exceedances happens to occur between November and April, we focus here on such winter (broadly speaking) pollution episodes. The deployment of monitoring devices allowing for a proper account of semi-volatile material within PM10 was achieved concomitantly to the development particulate pollution episodes largely influenced by ammonium nitrate (which is semi-volatile) in March-April 2007. Since then, such pollution events are frequently observed at this period of the year, notably due to stable meteorological conditions favoring the condensation of semi-volatile material into the particulate phase along with the resumption of manure spreading, which constitutes a major source of ammonium nitrate gaseous precursors (at least at some points of the year). Such pollution events, which are also related to combustion emissions (among which mobile sources) are typically preceded, from November to February, by frequent daily threshold exceedances with potentially significant influences of biomass burning (e.g. residential wood burning). The winter period is also impacted by long range transport episodes, corresponding notably to increases of ammonium sulfate relative abundances within PM10. Moreover, as traffic sites are generally the first ones showing PM10 exceedances due the increment of direct emissions and resuspension processes, mobile sources are also considered as a major target for action plans. Finally, it is underlined that the occurrence of daily threshold exceedances is highly influenced by meteorological conditions, so that the yearly number of these exceedances shows well-marked inter-annual variations, with 2009 and 2011 (and 2012, but not shown here) being significantly more polluted than 2008 and 2010. The on-going development of efficient forecasting systems still suffer lacks of detailed emission inventories and strong knowledge on the physical and chemical transformation processes of particles and their gaseous precursors within the boundary layer. | Cette synthèse dresse une analyse non exhaustive des dépassements du seuil réglementaire journalier de 50 micro g/m3 pour les PM10 mesurés au niveau national par les Associations Agréées de Surveillance de la Qualité de l'Air (AASQA) au cours des quatre dernières années. Près des trois quarts de ces dépassements étant observés entre fin novembre et début avril, nous nous intéressons plus particulièrement ici à ces épisodes hivernaux (au sens large). La mise en oeuvre de techniques analytiques permettant une prise en compte correcte des espèces semi-volatiles dans la composition des PM10 a coïncidé en mars-avril 2007 à la survenue de nombreux dépassements de seuil journalier s'accompagnant d'importants niveaux de nitrate d'ammonium (composé semi-volatil). Ce type d'épisode est régulièrement observé à cette période. Il s'explique notamment par la conjonction de conditions atmosphériques stables et propices à la condensation en phase particulaire des espèces labiles, et de la reprise des épandages agricoles, constituant une source majeure, au moins ponctuellement, de précurseurs gazeux azotés du nitrate d'ammonium. Ce type d'épisode, mettant également en cause les émissions anthropiques de combustion (dont les transports), est typiquement précédé entre novembre et février de fréquents dépassements pour lesquels le rôle des combustions de biomasse (incluant notamment le chauffage au bois individuel) peut être important. La période hivernale est également marquée par l'occurrence de phénomènes de transport longue distance se caractérisant par une augmentation des contributions du sulfate d'ammonium. Les sites de proximité automobile étant généralement les premiers concernés par les dépassements du seuil journalier en raison du surplus de concentrations provenant des émissions à l'échappement et des phénomènes de remise en suspension, le transport routier est également considéré comme un levier incontournable pour le respect des valeurs limites. Enfin, il est souligné que l'occurrence des différents types d'épisodes de dépassements dépend fortement des conditions météorologiques, de sorte qu'on observe une forte variabilité interannuelle du nombre de dépassements hivernaux ? : 2009 et 2011 (et 2012) étant significativement plus impactées que 2008 et 2010. Une bonne prévision de ces épisodes passe encore par l'affinage des cadastres d'émission et une meilleure compréhension du devenir dans l'atmosphère des émissions primaires (gazeuses et particulaires).

This text focuses on the identification, efficiencies, classification and management of landscape features having a potential buffer function regarding diffuse phosphorus, because of their specific structure (vegetation-soil) and of their location at the interface between sources (farm infrastructures, emitting fields…) and surface water bodies. These buffers are very diverse and correspond to natural landscape features (wetlands, riparian areas…) as well as manmade structures (constructed buffer strips or intermediate cases such as field margins, hedgerows). Their role and efficiency depends on the local factors controlling the retention processes (internal organisation and properties of the buffer), on the position within the watershed, and on the landscape context which reciprocally determines the overall buffer capacity of a watershed. On that basis, we recognize the diversity of the buffers in structure and functioning and thus in the way they attenuate the signal, their limitations (sustainability, side effects) and their hierarchic organisation at the watershed scale.

The agricultural activity presents the main source of the atmospheric contamination by pesticides. The occurrence of pesticides in the atmosphere concerns the research community due to their potential impacts on population and ecosystems. The volatilization from plants is higher and faster than the volatilization from soil. However, this transfer pathway is difficult to assess with few available models. The lack of knowledge on pesticide volatilization from plants is essentially linked to the complex interactions between processes occurring at the leaf surface and competing with volatilization, such as leaf penetration and photodegradation. This article presents a bibliographic synthesis of the state of knowledge on pesticide volatilization from plants, leaf penetration, photodegradation and control factors of these processes. Measuring methods and existing models describing these processes are also presented and analyzed | Les niveaux de concentration des pesticides dans l’atmosphère méritent une attention particulière de la part de la recherche compte tenu de leurs impacts potentiels sur la population et les écosystèmes. L’activité agricole constitue la principale source de contamination de l’atmosphère par les pesticides. Bien que la volatilisation depuis la plante soit reconnue plus intense et plus rapide que la volatilisation depuis le sol, cette voie de transfert est à ce jour la moins bien renseignée avec peu de modèles disponibles pour sa description. Le manque de connaissances est lié essentiellement à la complexité des interactions entre les processus ayant lieu à la surface de la feuille et qui sont en compétition avec la volatilisation, notamment la pénétration foliaire et la photodégradation. Cet article présente une synthèse bibliographique sur l’état des lieux des connaissances sur le processus de volatilisation des pesticides depuis un couvert végétal, de la pénétration foliaire et de la photodégradation, ainsi que les facteurs de contrôle de ces processus. peer reviewed | The Mediterranean seagrass species Posidonia oceanica forms extensive meadows that provide numerous ecological and economic services. Among the human activities threatening these meadows, boat anchoring causes severe degradation resulting in meadow fragmentation, exposure of the dead matte, and sediment disruption. In this study, we assessed the natural recolonisation dynamics of P. oceanica in anchoring-degraded sites focusing on both shallow and deep sites. Over two years, photogrammetry was employed to monitor recolonisation dynamics with a focus on patchs' edges expansion and storm-fragments accumulation. Our results show distinct recolonisation patterns between shallow and deep sites, with shallow patches displaying more variable dynamics of erosion and recolonisation, while deep patches showed slower but more consistent recovery. Additionally, the abundance of storm-fragments, primarily in shallow areas, suggests potential for enhanced recovery through natural trapping structures. Despite recent regulations reducing anchoring pressures, recolonisation rates remain insufficient to counteract the extent of degradation in a reasonable timespan. These findings underline the importance of designing tailored restoration strategies based on site-specific recolonisation potential: high-density transplantation with durable anchoring structures in shallow areas to withstand hydrodynamic forces, and more cost-effective solutions like iron staples in deeper areas. Additionally, the study supports the use of trapping substrates to retain storm-fragments in shallow sites to boost natural recolonisation. This approach is crucial for enhancing seagrass meadow resilience, especially within a context of climate change and increasing pressures on coastal ecosystems.

peer reviewed | The application of biosolids can improve soil fertility and crop productivity but also accompanies risks of heavy metals and antibiotics introduction. In the presence of heavy metals contamination, using arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a promising strategy to enhance soil microbial community stability and plant tolerance resistance to heavy metals, and to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The present study investigated the impacts of AMF inoculation on soil and plant heavy metal contents, and soil microbial communities by pot experiments. The results showed that AMF inoculation significantly enhanced plant biomass, and reduced soil and plant heavy metals contents. While AMF inoculation did not alter bacterial and fungal community compositions, it increased bacterial diversity at higher biosolids concentrations. Notably, AMF inoculation enhanced microbial network complexity and increased keystone taxa abundance. Furthermore, several beneficial microorganisms with high resistance to heavy metals were enriched in AMF-inoculated soils. Metagenomic analysis revealed a reduction in the mobile genetic element (MGE) gene IS91 in AMF-inoculated soils and an increase in heavy metal resistance genes compared to soils without AMF. The possibility of reduction in MGE-mediated spread of ARGs is one of the key findings of this study. As a caution, this study also detected enrichment of few ARGs in high biosolids-amended soils with AMF inoculation. Overall, AMF inoculation could be a valuable strategy in agriculture for mitigating the environmental risks associated with biosolids, heavy metals and antibiotic resistance, thereby promoting sustainable soil management and health.

peer reviewed | Pollution particularly affects coastal ecosystems due to their proximity to anthropic sources. Among those en- vironments, harbours are subjected to marine traffic but also to accidental and chronic pollution. These areas are thus exposed to complex mixtures of contaminants such as trace elements and organic contaminants which can impact marine species, habitats, and ecosystem services. The monitoring of these compounds is thus a crucial issue for assessment of environmental health. In this context, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the chemical contamination of harbours in Corsica (NW Mediterranean) by measuring the bioaccumulation of trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in mussels, limpets, and sea cu- cumbers. The human health risks associated with seafood consumption were also assessed. Results reveal a relatively low contamination in the Corsican harbours studied compared to larger Mediterranean ports and suggest that the potential health risk for consumers eating seafood is low. | Quality of the marine environment in the Mediterranean port areas (QUAMPO)

To date, the plastisphere is mainly described at the taxonomic level and the functioning of its microbial communities still remains poorly documented. In this work, metagenomic and metaproteomic analyzes were performed on the plastisphere of polypropylene and polyethylene plastic debris sampled on a pebble beach from the Mediterranean Sea. Our results confirmed that the plastisphere was organized as self-sufficient eco- systems containing highly active primary producers, heterotrophs and predators such as nematode. Interestingly, the chemical composition of the polymer did not impact the structure of the microbial communities but rather influenced the functions expressed. Despite the fact that the presence of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria was observed in the metagenomes, polymer degradation metabolisms were not detected at the protein level. Finally, hydrocarbon degrader (i.e., Alcanivorax) and pathogenic bacteria (i.e., Vibrionaceae) were observed in the plas- tispheres but were not very active as no proteins involved in polymer degradation or pathogeny were detected. This work brings new insights into the functioning of the microbial plastisphere developed on plastic marine debris.
