Water quality has recently emerged as one of the utmost severe ecological problems being faced by the developing countries all over the world, and Bangladesh is no exception. Both surface and groundwater sources contain different contaminants, which lead to numerous deaths due to water-borne diseases, particularly among children. This study presents one of the most comprehensive reviews on the current status of water quality in Bangladesh with a special emphasis on both conventional pollutants and emerging contaminants. Data show that urban rivers in Bangladesh are in a critical condition, especially Korotoa, Teesta, Rupsha, Pashur, and Padma. The Buriganga River and few locations in the Turag, Balu, Sitalakhya, and Karnaphuli rivers have dissolvable oxygen (DO) levels of almost zero. Many waterways contain traces of NO3, NO2, and PO4-3 pollutants. The majority of the rivers in Bangladesh also have Zn, Cu, Fe, Pb, Cd, Ni, Mn, As, and Cr concentrations that exceed the WHO permissible limits for safe drinking water, while their metal concentrations exceed the safety threshold for irrigation. Mercury poses the greatest hazard with 90.91% of the samples falling into the highest risk category. Mercury is followed by zinc 57.53% and copper 29.16% in terms of the dangers they pose to public health and the ecosystem. Results show that a considerable percentage of the population is at risk, being exposed to contaminated water. Despite hundreds of cryptosporidiosis cases reported, fecal contamination, i.e., Cryptosporidium, is totally ignored and need serious considerations to be regularly monitored in source water.

International audience | Metabolic disorders induced by endocrine disruptors (ED) may contribute to amphibian population declines but no transgenerational studies have evaluated this hypothesis. Here we show that Xenopus tropicalis, exposed from the tadpole stage, to the ED benzo[a]pyrene (BaP, 50 ng.L−1) produced F2 progeny with delayed metamorphosis and sexual maturity. At the adult stage, F2–BaP females displayed fatty liver with inflammation, tissue disorganization and metabolomic and transcriptomic signatures typical of nonalcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH). This phenotype, similar to that observed in F0 and F1 females, was accompanied by a pancreatic insulin secretory defect. Metabolic disrupted F2–BaP females laid eggs with metabolite contents significantly different from the control and these eggs did not produce viable progeny. This study demonstrated that an ED can induce transgenerational disruption of metabolism and population collapse in amphibians under laboratory conditions. These results show that ED benzo[a]pyrene can impact metabolism over multiple generations and support epidemiological studies implicating environmental EDs in metabolic diseases in humans.

International audience | The use of the Diffusive Gradient in Thin Film sampler (DGT) as a monitoring tool for regulatory programs is currently evaluated. In this context, the impact of commonly followed procedures on the accuracy of DGT-labile As, Cd, Cu, and Ni quantification was studied. Initial sampler contamination yields to define quantification limits instead of using blank subtraction, thus avoiding artifact concentrations. Not considering the alteration of element diffusion by the filter membrane leads to significant underestimation. However, diffusion coefficients determined on a non-fouled membrane were found to be suitable for the studied site, making it possible to use data from the literature. When diffusive boundary layer formation is neglected, no loss of accuracy is recorded provided the layer is thinner than 0.5 mm. Finally, exploration of potential biases allowed initiating a framework that might help limit inaccuracies in DGT-labile concentration estimation and interpretation, especially in a low contamination context.

peer reviewed | The Mediterranean seagrass species Posidonia oceanica forms extensive meadows that provide numerous ecological and economic services. Among the human activities threatening these meadows, boat anchoring causes severe degradation resulting in meadow fragmentation, exposure of the dead matte, and sediment disruption. In this study, we assessed the natural recolonisation dynamics of P. oceanica in anchoring-degraded sites focusing on both shallow and deep sites. Over two years, photogrammetry was employed to monitor recolonisation dynamics with a focus on patchs' edges expansion and storm-fragments accumulation. Our results show distinct recolonisation patterns between shallow and deep sites, with shallow patches displaying more variable dynamics of erosion and recolonisation, while deep patches showed slower but more consistent recovery. Additionally, the abundance of storm-fragments, primarily in shallow areas, suggests potential for enhanced recovery through natural trapping structures. Despite recent regulations reducing anchoring pressures, recolonisation rates remain insufficient to counteract the extent of degradation in a reasonable timespan. These findings underline the importance of designing tailored restoration strategies based on site-specific recolonisation potential: high-density transplantation with durable anchoring structures in shallow areas to withstand hydrodynamic forces, and more cost-effective solutions like iron staples in deeper areas. Additionally, the study supports the use of trapping substrates to retain storm-fragments in shallow sites to boost natural recolonisation. This approach is crucial for enhancing seagrass meadow resilience, especially within a context of climate change and increasing pressures on coastal ecosystems.

peer reviewed | The application of biosolids can improve soil fertility and crop productivity but also accompanies risks of heavy metals and antibiotics introduction. In the presence of heavy metals contamination, using arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a promising strategy to enhance soil microbial community stability and plant tolerance resistance to heavy metals, and to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The present study investigated the impacts of AMF inoculation on soil and plant heavy metal contents, and soil microbial communities by pot experiments. The results showed that AMF inoculation significantly enhanced plant biomass, and reduced soil and plant heavy metals contents. While AMF inoculation did not alter bacterial and fungal community compositions, it increased bacterial diversity at higher biosolids concentrations. Notably, AMF inoculation enhanced microbial network complexity and increased keystone taxa abundance. Furthermore, several beneficial microorganisms with high resistance to heavy metals were enriched in AMF-inoculated soils. Metagenomic analysis revealed a reduction in the mobile genetic element (MGE) gene IS91 in AMF-inoculated soils and an increase in heavy metal resistance genes compared to soils without AMF. The possibility of reduction in MGE-mediated spread of ARGs is one of the key findings of this study. As a caution, this study also detected enrichment of few ARGs in high biosolids-amended soils with AMF inoculation. Overall, AMF inoculation could be a valuable strategy in agriculture for mitigating the environmental risks associated with biosolids, heavy metals and antibiotic resistance, thereby promoting sustainable soil management and health.
