Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are persistent organic compounds of major concern that accumulate in the environment, especially soils, and require remediation. Researches to develop bioremediation and phytoremediation (alternative eco-friendly technologies) are being conducted. First, a bioaccessibility measurement protocol was adapted to a brownfield soil using Tenax® beads in order to compare PAHs bioaccessibility in soil samples. PAHs desorption kinetics were established, described by a site distribution model, and a common extraction time was calculated (48 h). Second, the role of two Fabaceae (Medicago sativa L. or Trifolium pratense L.) root exudates in enhancing PAHs bioaccessibility and biodegradation in the studied soil was evaluated during microcosms experiments (28 °C). The CO₂ emissions were significantly higher in presence of T. pratense exudates; the dehydrogenase activities showed improvements of the soil microbial activity in presence of two types of root exudates compared to untreated soil samples; the PAHs residual contents decreased more in untreated samples than in the presence of T. pratense exudates; and M. sativa exudates lowered PAHs bioaccessibility but not residual contents.

A growing number of electrochemical oxidation system was employed for the degradation of refractory contaminants. In this study, a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode/Ti cathode equipped in the differential column batch reactor (DCBR) was utilized for electrochemical oxidation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The feed solution within the DCBR system was confirmed as a uniform flow state through a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation analysis. The results showed that the BDD anode/Ti cathode electrochemical system was with a high efficiency oxidation performance when treating the CIP contaminant. The CIP was completely degraded within 20 min, and over 50% DOC removed after 120 min. Therefore, two-stage electrochemical oxidation mechanism was proposed. Four major factors, the initial concentration, current density, pH, and electrolyte concentration, on the CIP degradation efficiency were systematically investigated. The CIP degradation curve followed pseudo first-order degradation kinetics. The electric efficiency per order (EE/O) of the electrochemical oxidation system was calculated to determine an optimal operation condition. Moreover, the oxidation intermediates were identified with a mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) and the degradation pathways were proposed in this study. The destruction of quinolone moiety and piperazine ring and fluorine substitution were the three possible degradation pathways during BDD anode oxidation process.

The present study was aimed to reveal the effect of cadmium (Cd)-polluted soil on the activation of antioxidant enzymes, photosynthesis, pigments, water relation, and other biochemical traits and comparative effect of synthetic and organic chelators. A pot experiment was conducted using two maize varieties grown in Cd-contaminated (15 and 30 mg kg⁻¹) soil and chelators (1 mM EDTA, and 1 mM citric acid). Cd decreased biomass and photosynthetic traits while increased malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, total proteins, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Addition of EDTA enhanced Cd uptake, antioxidative enzyme, and total proteins; however, it reduced the water, osmotic, and turgor potential as compared to Cd alone. Addition of citric acid has lessened the antioxidant enzyme activities and MDA contents and enhanced the plant biomass as compared to Cd alone. Increases in antioxidants and MDA content were found to be positively related to the Cd contents in shoot and root. The application of citric acid significantly alleviated the Cd-induced toxic effects, showing remarkable improvement in biomass. These results indicated that EDTA was more effective for mobilizing Cd from soil to the root and shoot than citric acid; however, the physiological traits and plant biomass were more strongly inhibited by EDTA than by the Cd. Our study implies that citric acid ameliorated the negative effect of Cd on physiological traits and biomass, and hence could be used effectively for Cd phytoextraction.

In this study, the treatment of wastewater coming from a river highly polluted with domestic and industrial effluents was evaluated. For this purpose, series of photocatalysts obtained by ZnO and TiO₂ modification were evaluated. The effect of metal addition and Ti precursor (in the case of the titania series) over the physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of the materials obtained was also analyzed. The evaluation of the photocatalytic activity showed that semiconductor modification and precursor used in the materials synthesis are important factors influencing the physicochemical and therefore the photocatalytic properties of the materials obtained. The water samples analyzed in the present work were taken from a highly polluted river, and it was found that the effectiveness of the photocatalytic treatment increases when the reaction time increases and for both, wastewater samples and isolated Escherichia coli strain follow the next order Pt/TiO₂ << ZnO. It was also observed that biochemical and chemical demand oxygen and turbidity significantly decrease after treatment, thus indicating that photocatalysis is a non-selective technology, which can lead to recover wastewater containing different pollutants.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) are frequently detected in soils and groundwater, which may pose threats to public health and the environment. However, the fate and transport of BPA/BPS in the subsurface media are still not clear. In this study, the retention and transport of BPA/BPS in three different natural soils were investigated with column experiments and mathematical modeling. The results showed that both BPA and BPS had high mobility in saturated soil A (Xinjiang soil), medium mobility in soil B (Changshu soil) media, and no mobility in the soil C (Jilin soil). There was a negative correlation between the mobility of BPA/BPS and soil organic matter (SOM) content because of the strong sorption of BPA/BPS on SOM. BPS showed higher mobility than BPA in the three soils. In addition, with the reduction of SOM of the soil B and C (after H₂O₂-treatment), the mobility of BPA/BPS enhanced dramatically. All these suggest that SOM played a significant role in controlling the retention and transport of BPA/BPS in the soil. Furthermore, the two-site kinetic model simulated the BPA/BPS transport experiment results very well.

Three representative earthen canals from urban, peri-urban, and rural-urban fringe of Sri Lanka were studied for a 2-year period against different seasons to capture insights important in ecological rehabilitation. Only the canal from rural-urban fringe showed a better water quality in wet season; elucidating, the impact of contaminated catchment runoff in the other canals. At a given sampling session, one or two peaks (relative maxima) were observed in urban and peri-urban canals for pollution representative parameters such as nitrate nitrogen and soluble reactive phosphorus. Those peaks were highly localised, an indication of poor advection. In general, two-dimensional variations of electrical conductivity and turbidity in dry season were uniform in urban and peri-urban canals, an indication of dominant molecular diffusion. This was further evidenced via physical models for different flow stages (low, high, and bankfull). Therefore, fate of contaminants had to be mainly governed by assimilation via sediments. However, grey water footprint analyses showed urban and peri-urban canals have over utilised the natural assimilation capacity of many water quality parameters by several folds. This study proved the importance of inducing attenuation by instream physical heterogeneity similar to natural streams or naturalised canals such as the canal from the rural-urban fringe of this study.

Chemical treatment could improve the adsorption performance of biochars (BC). In order to deal with Pb(II) pollution, four types of biochars including unmodified, acid-treated, alkali-treated, and magnetic-treated pig manure-derived biochars (PBCs) were prepared. The effect of chemical treatment on the physical property, chemical composition, and the adsorption behavior of biochars was compared. Magnetic and alkali treatment improved pore volume and specific surface areas, and the adsorption capacity and rates were enhanced. In contrast, the adsorption capacity of acid-treated BC decreased due to the significant decrease of ash content. The magnetic samples displayed the satisfactory absorption performance, which could achieve 99.8% removal efficiency within 15 min at a Pb(II) concentration of 50 mg/L. Considering its properties of excellent adsorption performance, fast reaction rate, and convenient recovery by an external magnetic field, magnetic biochar based on pig manure may provide an effective way to remove heavy metals and decrease the pig manure solid waste.

Ester-functionalized pyridinium ionic liquids (ILs), 1-decyloxycarbonylmethylpyridinium chloride (PyrСOOC₁₀-Cl), and 1-dodecyloxycarbonylmethylpyridinium chloride (PyrСOOC₁₂-Cl) have been synthesized and studied for their environmental toxicity. Simple long-chain pyridinium ILs, 1-dodecylpyridinium chloride (PyrC₁₂-Cl), and commercial disinfectant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were used as reference compounds. Both ester-functionalized ILs and CPC showed significantly reduced antibacterial activity compared to PyrC₁₂-Cl. However, ester-functionalized ILs were found to have excellent antifungal activity towards Candida albicans fungus strains, similar to PyrC₁₂-Cl and much higher than for CPC. The molecular docking of ILs in the active site of the known antifungal target N-myristoyltransferase (Nmt) C. albicans has been conducted. The obtained results indicate the possibility of ILs binding into the Nmt pocket. The high stability of the complexes, especially for PyrCOOC₁₀-Cl, is ensured by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic anion-pi interactions, as well as hydrophobic pi-alkyl and alkyl interactions that was confirmed by calculated binding energy values. The acute toxicity studies of ester-functionalized ILs on D. rerio (zebrafish) hydrobiont have shown their dramatically reduced ecotoxicity compared to PyrC₁₂-Cl and CPC. Thus, LD₅₀ values of 15.2 mg/L and 16.8 mg/L were obtained for PyrCOOC₁₀-Cl and PyrCOOC₁₂-Cl, respectively, whereas CPC had LD₅₀ value of 0.018 mg/L. The primary biodegradation test CEC L-33-A93 of ILs indicated an improved biodegradability of ester-functionalized compounds compared to simple long-chain ILs. Based on the obtained results, PyrCOOC₁₀-Cl may be considered as very promising cationic biocide due to the combination of soft antimicrobial activity and reduced ecotoxicity, as well as improved biodegradability.

The study investigated species composition and polysaccharides, proteins, and eDNA content in EPS fractions (soluble, Sol-EPS; loosely bound, LB-EPS; tightly bound, TB-EPS) in nitrifying aerobic granules from reactor operated at a high load of nitrogen 0.5 kg TKN/(m³ × day). In the study, polysaccharides predominated in Sol-EPS, whereas proteins were the main component of bound EPS. eDNA was only detectable in TB-EPS. In Sol-EPS, eDNA originating from Pseudomonales predominated; species belonging to Pseudomonales produce glue-like polysaccharides that enable surface colonization. In all EPS fractions, high abundance of Acinetobacter sp. was noted. In TB-EPS, Thauera sp. was present in high abundance (25.6%) that produce polymers ensuring compact granule structure and that participate in many key metabolic processes for nitrogen conversions in wastewater treatment plants such as heterotrophic nitrification or denitrification. The study indicates that each EPS fraction in aerobic granules represents micro-environment facilitating the growth of species that produce a component of EPS with function essential for surrounding cells.

Since the introduction of environmental legislations and directives, the impact of combined sewer overflows (CSO) on receiving water bodies has become a priority concern in water and wastewater treatment industry. Time-consuming and expensive local sampling and monitoring campaigns are usually carried out to estimate the characteristic flow and pollutant concentrations of CSO water. This study focuses on estimating the frequency and duration of wet-weather events and their impacts on influent flow and wastewater characteristics of the largest Italian wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in Castiglione Torinese. Eight years (viz. 2009–2016) of historical data in addition to arithmetic mean daily precipitation rates (PI) of the plant catchment area are elaborated. Relationships between PI and volumetric influent flow rate (Qᵢₙ), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium (N-NH₄), and total suspended solids (TSS) are investigated. A time series data mining (TSDM) method is implemented with MATLAB computing package for segmentation of time series by use of a sliding window algorithm (SWA) to partition the available records associated with wet and dry weather events. According to the TSDM results, a case-specific wet-weather definition is proposed for the Castiglione Torinese WWTP. Two significant weather-based influent scenarios are assessed by kernel density estimation. The results confirm that the method suggested within this study based on plant routinely collected data can be used for planning the emergency response and long-term preparedness for extreme climate conditions in a WWTP. Implementing the obtained results in dynamic process simulation models can improve the plant operational efficiency in managing the fluctuating loads.
