Reduced bioaccumulation of PAHs by Lactuca satuva L. grown in contaminated soil amended with sewage sludge and sewage sludge derived biochar Texte intégral

The influence of sewage sludge (SS) and sewage sludge biochar (SSBC) upon biomass yield and the bioaccumulation of PAHs into lettuce plants grown in contaminated soil (∑16PAH 20.2 ± 0.9 mg kg−1) is presented. All SSBC amendments (2, 5 and 10%) and the 2% SS amendment significantly (P < 0.01) increased lettuce biomass. Both SS and SSBC amendments significantly reduced (P < 0.01) the bioaccumulation of PAHs at all application levels; with reduction in ∑16PAH concentration ranging between 41.8 and 60.3% in SS amended treatments and between 58.0 and 63.2% in SSBC amended treatments, with respect to the control. Benefits in terms of biomass production and PAHs bioaccumulation reduction were greatest where SSBC was used as a soil amendment. At high application rates (10%) SSBC reduced bioaccumulation of PAHs by between 56% and 67%, while SS reduced bioaccumulation of PAHs by less than 44%.

This study evaluated the dietary uptake kinetics and sublethal toxicity of p,p′-dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE) in Antarctic krill. The uptake rate constant (characterised by the seawater volume stripped of contaminant sorbed to algae) of 200 ± 0.32 mL g−1 wet weight h−1, average absorption efficiency of 86 ± 13% and very low elimination rate constant of 5 × 10−6 ± 0.0031 h−1 demonstrate the importance of feeding for p,p′-DDE bioaccumulation in Antarctic krill. Faecal egestion of unabsorbed p,p′-DDE of 8.1 ± 2.7% indicates that this pathway contributes considerably to p,p′-DDE sinking fluxes. A median internal effective concentration (IEC50) of 15 mmol/kg lipid weight for complete immobility indicates baseline toxicity and that Antarctic krill exhibit comparable toxicological sensitivity as temperate species under similar 10 d exposure conditions. These findings support the critical body residue approach and provide insight to the role of Antarctic krill in the biogeochemical cycling of p,p′-DDE in the Southern Ocean.

Individual uptake of As and Sb species in Pteris vittata have been investigated, but little information is available how uptake is affected if both metalloids are simultaneously present in different amounts. We investigated the uptake of antimony and its speciation in Pteris vittata cultivated in quartz substrate with, versus without, co-contamination with arsenic and a contaminated soil for 7 weeks. Applying HPLC-ICP-MS technique Sb(V), Sb(III), As(III), and As(V) could be identified as main species in aqueous extracts of roots and fronds with up to 230 mg kg−1 of total Sb in the roots. Adding increasing amounts of As to the quartz substrate resulted in increasing uptake of Sb. In contrast to As, which is readily transferred to the fronds, Sb is primarily accumulated in the roots with Sb(V) being the dominant species (>90% of Sb). The addition of As doesn't result in enhanced translocation of Sb into the fronds.

Many important environmental contaminants are hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), which include PCBs, PAHs, PBDEs, DDT and other chlorinated insecticides, among others. Owing to their strong hydrophobicity, HOCs have their final destination in soil or sediment, where their ecotoxicological effects are closely regulated by sorption and thus bioavailability. The last two decades have seen a dramatic increase in research efforts in developing and applying partitioning based methods and biomimetic extractions for measuring HOC bioavailability. However, the many variations of both analytical methods and associated measurement endpoints are often a source of confusion for users. In this review, we distinguish the most commonly used analytical approaches based on their measurement objectives, and illustrate their practical operational steps, strengths and limitations using simple flowcharts. This review may serve as guidance for new users on the selection and use of established methods, and a reference for experienced investigators to identify potential topics for further research.

Current pesticide registration guidelines call for short-term testing of plants; long-term effects on vegetative parts and reproduction remain untested. The aims of our study were to determine level of recovery and recovery times for plants exposed to the sulfonylurea herbicide chlorimuron ethyl using data collected from single species, dose–response greenhouse experiments. The nine terrestrial and eight wetland species tested showed variable levels of recovery and recovery timeframes. Many species (six terrestrial and five wetland) were vegetatively stunted at sublethal doses and were reproductively impaired. Full recovery did not occur at all doses and maximum recovery times varied from 3 to 15 weeks in this controlled environment. In a complex community, affected species may be displaced by tolerant species, through interspecific competition, before they fully recover. It is plausible that individual populations could be diminished or eliminated through reduced seedbank inputs (annuals and perennials) and asexual reproduction (perennials).

The present study was conducted to assess morphological, biochemical and yield responses of palak (Beta vulgaris L. cv Allgreen) to ambient and elevated levels of CO2 and O3, alone and in combination. As compared to the plants grown in charcoal filtered air (ACO2), growth and yield of the plants increased under elevated CO2 (ECO2) and decreased under combination of ECO2 with elevated O3 (ECO2 + EO3), ambient O3 (ACO2 + AO3) and elevated O3 (EO3). Lipid peroxidation, ascorbic acid, catalase and glutathione reductase activities enhanced under all treatments and were highest in EO3. Foliar starch and organic carbon contents increased under ECO2 and ECO2 + EO3 and reduced under EO3 and ACO2 + AO3. Foliar N content declined in all treatments compared to ACO2 resulting in alteration of C/N ratio. This study concludes that ambient level of CO2 is not enough to counteract O3 impact, but elevated CO2 has potential to counteract the negative effects of future O3 level.

This literature review focuses on the prevalence of nitrogen and phosphorus in urban environments and the complex relationships between land use and water quality. Extensive research in urban watersheds has broadened our knowledge about point and non-point pollutant sources, but the fate of nutrients is not completely understood. For example, it is not known how long-term nutrient cycling processes in turfgrass landscapes influence nitrogen retention rates or the relative atmospheric contribution to urban nitrogen exports. The effect of prolonged reclaimed water irrigation is also unknown. Stable isotopes have been used to trace pollutants, but distinguishing sources (e.g., fertilizers, wastewater, etc.) can be difficult. Identifying pollutant sources may aid our understanding of harmful algal blooms because the extent of the relationship between urban nutrient sources and algal blooms is unclear. Further research on the delivery and fate of nutrients within urban watersheds is needed to address manageable water quality impacts.

An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the empirical model developed by Pelfrêne et al. (2012), predicting the human bioaccessibility of Cd and Pb in smelter-contaminated agricultural topsoils, by including other soil uses: 50 urban and 65 woody habitat topsoils collected in the same area. The results showed that land use significantly affected the pseudototal metal concentrations and their oral bioaccessibility. However, whatever the soil's physicochemical parameters and degree of contamination, the ‘agricultural’ model can be used to simulate metal gastric bioaccessibility in urban and woody habitat soils. To simulate gastrointestinal bioaccessibility, this model can be used directly if the pseudototal metal concentrations are on the same order of magnitude as those usually recorded in the agricultural soils studied or after the use of a correction factor if these concentrations are greater. These results showed that the oral bioaccessibility predictions could be applicable for further environmental risk evaluation.

A steady state Level III fate model was established and applied to quantify source–receptor relationship in a coking industry city in Northern China. The local emission inventory of PAHs, as the model input, was acquired based on energy consumption and emission factors. The model estimations were validated by measured data and indicated remarkable variations in the paired isomeric ratios. When a rectification factor, based on the receptor-to-source ratio, was calculated by the fate model, the quantitatively verified molecular diagnostic ratios provided reasonable results of local PAH emission sources. Due to the local ban and measures on small scale coking activities implemented from the beginning of 2004, the model calculations indicated that the local emission amount of PAHs in 2009 decreased considerably compared to that in 2003.

Air pollution has many negative effects on the natural environment, from changes in plant growth patterns to loss of ecosystem function. This study uses citizen science to investigate national-scale patterns in the distribution and abundance of selected lichen species on tree trunks and branches, and to relate these to air pollution and climate. Volunteers collected data for nine lichen indicators on 19,334 deciduous trees. Submitted data provided information on species-level patterns, and were used to derive composite lichen indices. Multiple linear regression and ANCOVA were used to model the relationships between lichen response variables on Quercus spp. and pollution, climate and location. The study demonstrated significant relationships between patterns in indicator lichens and levels of N- and S-containing pollutants on trunks and twigs. The derived lichen indices show great potential as a tool to provide information on local, site-specific levels of air quality.
