Cadmium (Cd) is absorbed readily by rice plants and is transferred to humans when contaminated rice is consumed. Adding selenium (Se) to the plant nutrient solutions reduces the accumulation of Cd in the rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. However, as the relevant underlying mechanism remains unclear, the aim of our study was to improve our understanding of the Se-mediated resistance to Cd stress in rice. We conducted hydroponic experiments to study the effects of selenite or selenate on Cd subcellular distribution and xylem transport in rice seedlings under Cd stress, and we investigated the antioxidative defense responses in the rice plants. We found that the supplementation of both Se forms decreased the Cd accumulations in the roots and shoots of the rice plants. The selenite addition significantly decreased the Cd contents in different subcellular fractions of the rice roots, increased the proportion of Cd distributed to soluble cytosol by 23.41%, and decreased the Cd distribution in the organelle by 28.74% in contrast with the treatment with Cd only. As regards the selenate addition, only the Cd distribution ratio of cytosol was increased by 13.07%. After adding selenite, a decrease of 55.86% in the Cd concentration in xylem sap was observed, whereas little change was found after treatment co-applied with selenate. The hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and malondialdehyde(MDA) contents in the rice roots were elevated under Cd stress, and the addition of selenite and selenate decreased the H₂O₂ levels by 77.78% and 59.26%, respectively. Co-exposure to Cd and Se elevated the glutathione (GSH) accumulations in the rice shoots and roots, with the degree of increase being the following: co-applied with selenite > co-applied with selenate > Cd alone treatment. Exposure to Cd increased the catalase (CAT) activity in the roots significantly, whereas it decreased in the shoots. After selenite or selenate supplementation, the CAT activity in the rice roots increased compared with applying only Cd. Compared with the control, the addition of Cd or Se had no significant effect on the activities of peroxidase (POD) or ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Our results showed that Se affected the Cd accumulation in rice seedlings by altering the Cd subcellular distribution and decreasing the ROS induced by Cd stress. Such effects were more significant in the selenite than in the selenate applied treatment.

Chemical treatment could improve the adsorption performance of biochars (BC). In order to deal with Pb(II) pollution, four types of biochars including unmodified, acid-treated, alkali-treated, and magnetic-treated pig manure-derived biochars (PBCs) were prepared. The effect of chemical treatment on the physical property, chemical composition, and the adsorption behavior of biochars was compared. Magnetic and alkali treatment improved pore volume and specific surface areas, and the adsorption capacity and rates were enhanced. In contrast, the adsorption capacity of acid-treated BC decreased due to the significant decrease of ash content. The magnetic samples displayed the satisfactory absorption performance, which could achieve 99.8% removal efficiency within 15 min at a Pb(II) concentration of 50 mg/L. Considering its properties of excellent adsorption performance, fast reaction rate, and convenient recovery by an external magnetic field, magnetic biochar based on pig manure may provide an effective way to remove heavy metals and decrease the pig manure solid waste.

Epoxiconazole (EPX) is a triazole fungicide commonly used in agriculture and for domestic purposes around the world. The excessive application of this pesticide may result in a variety of adverse effects on non-target organisms, including humans. Since, the liver and kidneys are the target organs of this fungicide, potential hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic effects are of high relevance. Thus, our study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of EPX on the liver and kidney of Wistar rats. The exposure of rats to EPX at these concentrations (8, 24, 40, 56 mg/kg bw representing, respectively, NOEL (no observed effect level), NOEL × 3, NOEL × 5, and NOEL × 7) for 28 days significantly enhances hepatic and renal lipid peroxidation which is accompanied by an increase in the level of protein oxidation. Furthermore, the results of the present study clearly indicated that EPX administration induces an increase in the levels of DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the activities of liver and kidney antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) are increased significantly in EPX-treated rats at concentrations of 8, 24, and 40 mg/kg bw. However, with the dose NOEL × 7 (56 mg/kg bw of EPX), the activities of CAT, GPx, and GST are decreased. Indeed, EPX-intoxicated rats revealed a significant reduction in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in both liver and kidney compared with the control group. Also, our results demonstrated that the EPX administration leads to a disruption of the hepatic (aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)) and renal (uric acid and creatinine) functions. The biochemical perturbations obtained in the present study are corroborated with the histopathological modifications. Since EPX treatment caused severe damage in the overall histo-architecture of liver and kidney tissues, these results suggest that administration of EPX induced a marked deregulation of liver and kidney functions. Crude water extract of the ground longan seeds which have been disposed in a large amount annually in Northern Thailand has been used in a simple and rapid microwave synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles. The particles were characterized by the UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy and revealed to be pure hexagonal phase. Influences of zinc precursor in the extract, microwave power, and irradiation time on particle sizes were studied. The use of 800 W and 30 cycles of the microwave irradiation provided the ZnO particles of 10–100 nm in size with an active surface area, a band gap energy, and a zero-point charge of 35 m²·g⁻¹, 3.42 eV, and pH 7.7, respectively, after the calcination. Photocatalytic efficiencies of the synthesized particles were evaluated through the decolorization of methylene blue, malachite green, methyl orange, and orange II, and proved to be on par with commercially available titanium dioxide (Arroxide®P-25) under the same conditions. The use of the longan seeds biowaste as a sustainable supply of natural reagents for the green synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles which can be employed further for waste water treatment of the local textile dyeing industry is therefore presented. We performed a time series analysis to investigate the potential association between exposure to ambient air pollution and type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence in the Chinese population. Monthly time series data between 2008 and 2015 on ambient air pollutants and incident T2D (N = 25,130) were obtained from the Environment Monitoring Center of Ningbo and the Chronic Disease Surveillance System of Ningbo. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of incident T2D per 10 μg/m³ increases in ambient air pollutants were estimated from Poisson generalized additive models. Exposure to particulate matter < 10 μm (PM₁₀) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) was associated with increased T2D incidence. The relative risks (RRs) of each increment in 10 μg/m³ of PM₁₀ and SO₂ were 1.62 (95% CI, 1.16–2.28) and 1.63 (95% CI, 1.12–2.38) for overall participants, whereas for ozone (O₃) exposure, the RRs were 0.78 (95% CI, 0.68–0.90) for overall participants, 0.78 (95% CI, 0.69–0.90) for males, and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.67–0.91) for females, respectively. Exposure to PM₁₀ and SO₂ is positively associated with T2D incidence, whereas O₃ is negatively associated with T2D incidence.

As we all know, geochemical data usually contain outliers and they are heterogeneous, which will severely affect the use of receptor models based on classical estimates. In this paper, an advanced modified RAPCS-RGWR (robust absolute principal component scores-robust geographically weighted regression) receptor model was introduced to analyze the pollution sources of eight heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Ni, Cu, Zn) in a city of southern China. The results showed that source identification and source apportionment are more consistent by this advanced model even though the soil types and farming patterns are diverse. Moreover, this model decreased the occurrence of negative values of the source contribution. For these reasons, the pollution sources were classified into five types by the new model in the study area: agricultural sources, industrial sources, traffic sources, comprehensive sources, and natural sources. (1) The contributions of agricultural sources to Cr and Ni were 243.36% and 242.61%, respectively; (2) the contribution of industrial sources to Cd was 79.25%; (3) the contribution of traffic sources to Cu was 100.31%; (4) the contributions of comprehensive sources to Hg, Pb, and Zn were 253.90%, 242.31%, and 93.32%, respectively; and (5) the contribution of natural sources to As was 208.21%. Overall, the RAPCS-RGWR receptor model improved the validity of the receptor models. It is of great realistic significance to understand and popularize the advanced model in soil source apportionment in agricultural land.

Transport sector contributed numerous carbon emissions in China. It is important to promote low-carbon bicycle-sharing using in China. This paper aims to analyze the influencing factors of the satisfaction and engagement of bicycle-sharing in China. An extended model of customer satisfaction is established, which considers both customer satisfaction theory and customer engagement theory. We explore the different effect of convenience, health, safety, and facility on satisfaction of bicycle-sharing using. We also explore the role of satisfaction on three different dimensions of engagement: enthusiasm, participation, and social interaction. Multi-group structure equation model is employed to explore the different roles of gender on the determinants of satisfaction and engagement of bicycle-sharing using. The findings reveal that facilities had the larger effect on satisfaction of bicycle-sharing using than safety and health for male. Safety had the largest influence on satisfaction of bicycle-sharing using for female, followed by facility, convenience, and health.

2019
Han, Sunghwa | Long, Sharon C. | Runge, Troy | Dong, Cuihua | Liu, Zong
This study investigates levels of bacteria through population indicators as well as the levels of antibiotic-resistance bacteria in dairy manure. Although overall bacteria levels may be reduced during manure processing, it is of interest whether changes in management practices could lead to increased levels of antibiotic-resistance bacteria, which are becoming more prevalent in agricultural soils, groundwater, and surface water. Appropriate manure treatments are needed not only to reduce the potential risk of exporting antibiotic-resistant bacteria to an environment, but also reduce antibiotic-resistant bacteria exposure to animals if processed water is recycled. Results from this research revealed manure separation under relatively low speed centrifuge with 100 ppm polyacrylamide (PAM) emulsion addition reduced bacteria indicators population such as total coliforms and Escherichia coli (E. coli) significantly in the liquid stream compared to no PAM added. However, the percentages of antibiotic-resistant isolates in liquid stream after centrifuge with PAM were higher compared to raw manure and no PAM added. Antibiotic resistance (cephalosporin, florfenicol, penicillin, or tetracycline) was observed or 65.38% of bacterial isolates in manure from a large dairy farm in Wisconsin and 39.29% of isolates demonstrated multidrug resistance. The results from this study strongly suggest that appropriate manure treatment is essential in order to help minimize the abundance of antibiotic resistance in our water environment.

2019
Larochelle, Chloé G. | Bussière, Bruno | Pabst, Thomas
Tailings and waste rocks can be used to build covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) for the purposes of reclaiming acid-generating waste storage facilities while enhancing the value of the materials available on site. The efficiency of non-acid generating tailings, desulfurized tailings, and non-reactive waste rocks as cover materials was demonstrated in previous laboratory and field studies. However, acid-generating waste rocks are usually not considered for cover construction because of the risk of contamination. Nonetheless, using acid-generating waste rocks as the bottom capillary break layer in a CCBE could have economic and logistical benefits for companies, including helping to reduce the volume of waste rock piles and to valorize material that are generally considered to be problematic. In this study, laboratory column tests were performed to evaluate cover scenarios using acid-generating waste rocks from Westwood-Doyon mine (Québec, Canada). These waste rocks were placed under a moisture-retaining layer made of desulfurized tailings. A column test with non-acid-generating waste rocks was also performed for comparison purposes. Columns were submitted to eight wetting/drainage cycles. The performance of these systems was assessed by monitoring the volumetric water content in the different layers and by analyzing the water quality of the leachates. Significant reductions in contamination were observed when covers were added on the reactive waste rocks. These results suggest that it could be possible to valorize acid-generating waste rocks in cover systems.

2019
Kun Xiao and Jingdong Zhang
It is of great significance to reduce carbon emissions from electric power generation for green development. In addition to technical measures, two trading mechanisms are built to optimize China’s electric power generation: generation rights trading, and carbon emission rights trading. However, as the carbon emission rights trading are initiated, the issues of how to choose the right trading mechanism, and determining the appropriate strategy under the corresponding trading mechanism continue to confuse generation enterprises. In order to clarify these issues, the game theory was used to identify the proper trading strategies for generation enterprises under the two highly similar trade mechanisms. Results show that the two trading mechanisms are complementary to each other to some extent, and the generation enterprises should choose a proper trade strategy according to the endowment of generation prices, the technical abilities, the grid-loss price and the ratio of carbon-electricity conversion. The equilibrium solutions of trading scales and prices for the two trading mechanisms are mostly related to the endowments of generation prices. Generally, the buyers with higher endowments of generation prices should choose the carbon emission rights trading, and the buyers with lower endowments of generation prices can only benefit in generation rights trading. The bigger gaps between the endowments of generation prices of buyers and sellers are, the more likely the trade can be made and further result in a better environmental consequence. The conclusions provide suggestions to the government that, the grid-loss pricing and the ratio of carbon-electricity conversion could be used as key tools to regulate the market for both of the trade mechanisms.
