Sorption of okadaic acid lipophilic toxin onto plastics in seawater

The present study tested under laboratorial conditions the sorption of okadaic acid (OA), a lipophilic toxin produced by marine phytoplankton, onto 6-mm plastic circular fragments. Fragments (4 g L⁻¹) of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), expanded polystyrene (EPS) and non-expanded polystyrene (PS) were exposed for 96 h to seawater spiked with 10 ng mL⁻¹ of OA. Results of the experiments showed a broad percentage of OA removed from the water by plastics after 48 h of exposure: 30 ± 5.1% (PET), 37 ± 9.5% (PP), 62 ± 7.1% (EPS) and 83 ± 1.9% (PS). Sorption appears to be highly influenced by polymer's characteristics, such as polarity and degree of crystallinity. Further studies are needed to clarify the effect of the contact area on sorption by expanded plastics. These results point to the plausible interaction of OA and plastics in coastal waters.

Long-term effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton community in Deep Bay, Hong Kong, were investigated from 1994 to 2016. Phytoplankton community experienced three important shifts: small flagellates and Chroomonas spp. dominated from 1994 to 2006. Heavy blooms of diatoms Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira spp. occurred and became the dominant species between 2007 and 2009. Phytoplankton community was dominated by small flagellates and Chroomonas spp. from 2010 to 2015, and their abundance was much higher than earlier periods. Abundance of Chroomonas spp. decreased sharply in 2016, and Thalassiosira spp. became the dominant species. Phytoplankton community changed from consisting mainly of small flagellates and Chroomonas spp. to more diatoms, changing from ~90% to ~45% for other species abundance and from <10% to ~55% for diatoms. Nitrite, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, salinity, suspended solids and turbidity were more influential on phytoplankton variation (23.65% explained by all the variables).

Recent studies have suggested that increasing habitat complexity of artificial seawalls by modifying surface heterogeneity could enhance exploitable habitat and therefore species richness and abundance. We tested the effects of adding complex tiles (with crevices/ledges) of different heterogeneity (i.e., flat tiles resembling the seawall vs. tiles with crevices of 2.5 cm or 5.0 cm depth) and seeding with native rock oysters, Saccostrea cuccullata (unseeded vs. seeded) on species richness and abundances of intertidal marine organisms on two vertical seawalls in Hong Kong. Tiles were affixed to the mid-intertidal zone of the seawalls for 12 months. The results showed that the tiles with crevices had greater species richness and cover of sessile epifauna than flat tiles. Seeding tiles with S. cuccullata also facilitated natural recruitment of the same species. Our results support the hypothesis that using eco-engineering to increase habitat complexity can enhance the biodiversity of intertidal marine organisms on seawalls.

The ability of denitrifying microorganisms to respond to different ecological pressures remains unknown, especially in marine sediments rich in various heavy metals. Here, gene abundance and transcriptional abundance of five functional denitrification genes (narG, nirK, nirS, norB, and nosZ) in Bohai Sea sediments were examined, and high-throughput Illumina sequencing was used to analyze the community structure of nirK and nirS denitrifying bacteria. The nirS- and nirK-type denitrifying bacteria were classified into different genera. The heavy metal content in sediments was negatively correlated with transcriptional abundance of denitrifying genes, and RNA: DNA ratio for each gene was highest in central Bohai Sea. These results indicated the distribution of nitrite reductase denitrifying bacterial communities was affected by depth, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and sediment grain size. Heavy metal contamination in sediment environment may negatively regulate the transcriptional abundance of denitrifying genes and cause geographical differences in the denitrifying bacterial community structure.

The effects of microplastics (MPs) on the ecological functioning in marine sediments is largely unknown. However, coastal marine sediments and their resident communities play critical roles in the transformation of organic matter and the cycling of nutrients that influence both local and global processes. To investigate how microplastics influence ecosystem functions associated with sediment biogeochemistry, large bivalves and microphytobenthos, we conducted a 31-day laboratory experiment. The experiment tested the role of micro-polyethylene terephthalate (mPETs) at five concentrations (0%, 1%, 3%, 6%, and 8% based on wet weight of top 1 cm sediment). Canonical principle of coordinate analysis (CAP) was applied to assess change on the ecosystem functionality with increasing concentrations of mPETs. Our results highlight that stress effects on ecosystem function are the product of the interaction between Macomona liliana, microphytobenthos and mPETs.

Fixed-point and multi-point field survey was conducted to determine the actual contamination of the Japanese coast by microcapsules derived from coated fertilizers. The results indicated that the amount of microcapsules increased during the irrigation season (9423–74,869 pieces/m²) and decreased in the non-irrigation season (77–1471 pieces/m²). Microcapsules accounted for 90% of all microplastics sampled during the irrigation season. The lack of correlation between the area of agricultural land in the watershed and the microcapsule density on the coast suggested that the density of microcapsules on the coast was not only dependent on the total load to the ocean, but also on topographic and meteorological conditions. More than 90% of the microcapsules collected from the shoreline were made of polyethylene. Scanning electron microscopic observation of the surface of the microcapsules revealed that portions of the microcapsules were removed as secondary microplastics in the process of migration to the ocean.

Ornamental fish have been legally harvested since the 1930's but in the 60's, cyanide fishing was first documented. Target fish exposed to the chemical are temporarily paralysed making them easier to catch, but with high post-capture mortality and significant ecological impacts, its use is banned in most exporting countries. To differentiate illegally caught fish from those sustainably collected, efforts to develop a post-collection detection test began nearly 30 years ago. However, even the most promising approach has been questioned by other researchers as unrepeatable under different experimental conditions. In this paper we summarise the evidence-base for establishing a cyanide detection test for live fish by evaluating current approaches. We describe the key knowledge gaps which continue to limit our progress in implementing a screening programme and highlight some alternative solutions which may provide greater short to medium term opportunities to prevent the illegal practise before fish enter the supply chain.

Recreational ports are known to be sources of pollution to the coastal marine environment due to the pouring of pollutants or the transfer of invasive species to neighboring areas. Nonetheless, the responsibility of protecting the marine environment does not lie solely on the users of the ports, but also affects the rest of citizens. Thus, an effective communication is necessary between scientists and citizens to avoid the lack of knowledge and boost cooperation against these environmental problems. In this study, (focused on the marina of Gijon, Northwestern Spain) citizens set education and social media as the main sources of information, rarely considering science outreach. Also, their environmental knowledge showed to be based on a visual perception, rather than on a cognitive one, as marine litter was considered a great environmental problem, while invasive species and biofouling went unnoticed, remarking the lack of an effective communication from scientific sources.

Sediments were collected from urban mangroves in Shenzhen, China, including Shajing (SJ) and Xixiang (XX) featured with industrial district; Futian (FT) and Baguang (BG) featured with central business district and ecological preserve, respectively. Distributions, pollution levels and human health risks of Hg were explored. In both surface and vertical sediments, mean Hg concentration was highest in SJ mangrove, which may be due to its proximity to point-source discharge of Maozhou River in Pearl River Estuary, China. Sediment properties (pH, salinity, TOC and particle size) had limited impact on Hg accumulation due to their non-significant correlations. Geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, potential ecological risk index, and the ecological risk assessment code showed the highest ecological risk in SJ mangrove, followed by XX, FT, and BG mangroves. The assessment of human health risks showed that public experience little adverse health risk due to exposure to Hg polluted sediment in urban mangroves.

This study compared the capacity of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa and the green alga Ulva lactuca to sequester the trace elements Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, in seawater and benthic sediments, under the same environmental conditions. Samples of C. nodosa leaves and U. lactuca thalli were collected in four sites off the coast of Sicily (Italy), with varying degrees of anthropogenic impact. C. nodosa accumulated generally higher levels of trace elements, suggesting a better performance in marine phytoremediation. In turn, C. nodosa and U. lactuca showed a similar performance regarding the bioindication of trace elements. Since salinity, temperature and pH had relatively constant values, their role in the accumulation processes in both species should be considered as secondary. Although C. nodosa and U. lactuca fulfill several criteria as bioindicators, including widespread distribution, abundance and tolerance to toxicity, their regular use in biomonitoring programs is still limited.
