Odour control of pounds of food industry wastewaters by controlled denitrification Texte intégral

Correspondance : [email protected] | International audience | The noxious odours during storage and treatment of food industry wastewaters are a major environmental problem today. Winery wastewaters clearly fall within this framework. Volatile fatty acids (VFA) form the major products resulting from the fermentation of carbon compounds (ethanol and sugars) in winery wastewaters, and are responsible for characteristic foul odours as a result of their low olfactory perception threshold. Natural evaporation in ponds, a rustic and economical technique, well adapted to discharge variations and seasonal production, is a widely used treatment method for winery and distillery wastewaters. The prevention of VFA formation by orienting the degradation of organic matter in wastewater into odourless products through anaerobic respiration with nitrate as the electron acceptor (denitrification) was studied in winery wastewaters to which nitrate had been added in the form of concentrated nitric acid or nitrate salts.The effect of the addition of nitrate to winery wastewaters to control the formation of VFA in order to prevent odours during storage and treatment was studied in batch bioreactors (1 L) at different NO3/COD ratios and at full scale in natural evaporation ponds (2 x 7,000 m2) by measuring olfactory intensity. In the absence of nitrate, butyric acid (2.3 g.L-1), acetic acid (1.63 g L-1), propionic acid (1.56 g L-1), caproic acid (0.5 g L-1) and valeric acid (0.3 g.L-1) were produced from reconstituted winery wastewater. For a ratio of N03/COD = 0.4 g g-1, caproic and valeric acids were not formed. The production of butyric and propionic acids was reduced by 93.3 and 72.5%, respectively, at a ratio of NO3/COD = 0.8, and by 97.4 and 100% at a ratio of NO3/COD = 1.2 g g-1. Nitrate delayed and decreased butyric acid formation in relation to the oxidoreduction potential. Studies in ponds showed that the addition of concentrated calcium nitrate (NITCALTM) to winery wastewaters (3,526 m3) in a ratio of NO3/COD = 0.8 inhibited VFA production, with COD elimination (94%) and total nitrate degradation, and no final nitrite accumulation. On the contrary, in ponds not treated with nitrate, malodorous VFA (from propionic to heptanoïc acids) represented up to 60% of the COD. Olfactory intensity measurements in relation to the butanol scale of VFA solutions and the ponds revealed the pervasive role of VFA in the odour of the untreated pond as well as the clear decrease in the intensity and not unpleasant odour of the winery wastewater pond enriched in nitrates. The results obtained at full scale underscored the feasibility and safety of the calcium nitrate treatment as opposed to concentrated nitric acid.

41 ref. doi:10.1016/j.envpol.2003.12.023 | International audience | Metal distribution patterns in superficial soil horizons of agricultural land affected by metallurgical point-source pollution were studied using optical and electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation and spectroscopy analyses. The site is located in northern France, at the center of a former entry lane to a bunker of World War II, temporarily paved with coarse industrial waste fragments and removed at the end of the war. Thin sections made from undisturbed soil samples from A and B horizons were studied. Optical microscopy revealed the occurrence of yellow micrometer-sized (Ap horizon) and red decamicrometer-sized spherulites (AB, B1g horizons) as well as distinct distribution patterns. The chemical composition of the spherulites was dominated by Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Ca, and P. Comparison of calculated Zn stocks, both in the groundmass and in spherulites, showed a quasi-exclusive Zn accumulation in these neoformed features. Their formation was related to several factors: (i) liberation of metal elements due to weathering of waste products, (ii) Ca and P supply from fertilizing practices, (iii) co-precipitation of metal elements and Ca and P in a porous soil environment, after slow exudation of a supersaturated soil solution in more confined mineral media.

International audience | <div><p>Aquaculture is crucial in meeting global seafood demand; however, intensification often leads to bacterial diseases that threaten productivity. Dicentrarchus labrax, a key species in European aquaculture, is highly vulnerable to vibriosis, primarily caused by Vibrio harveyi. This study investigates genetic profiles associated with vibriosis by analyzing V. harveyi strains from a seabass farm during 2022 vibriosis outbreaks. Sampling from biofilm and water environments yielded 946 bacterial isolates, of which 56 were identified as V. harveyi using MALDI-TOF MS. ERIC-PCR genotyping revealed four distinct profiles. Despite observing variability in the presence of the 80 tested virulence genes, the overall genetic variation among these profiles was not pronounced. Notably, no single genotypic profile was linked to vibriosis. These findings suggest that the presence of virulence genes alone may not predict disease outbreaks, thus highlighting the need for future research on environmental and transcriptional factors to improve disease control in aquaculture systems.</p></div>

International audience | Plastics are one of the major forms of anthropogenic pollution. This waste can affect the individual survival in many species, including seabirds. The Southern Ocean ecosystems are thought to be less affected by this pollution, due to the low human presence and the natural protective barrier provided by southern oceanic fronts. Here, we report the first observation of macroplastic ingestion in two dead King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) in the Crozet archipelago located south of these fronts. There is no evidence that the macroplastic fragments found in their stomach were the direct cause of death.We suggest that they were ingested by being confused with stones they used for food grinding.Although it is difficult to assess the local or distant origin of these macroplastics, efforts to collect waste from sites as remote as the subantarctic islands must become standard practice to ensure that such ingestions do not become commonplace.

International audience | Sediment cores from the central Algerian coast were collected to investigate the distribution, sources and risk oftrace metals. The local geochemical background of metals was defined from the core S collected in an uncontaminatedarea of the coast. The anthropogenic inputs in Algiers Bay elevated Ag, Cd, Pb and Zn concentrationsas their maximum were 3.1, 3, 2.1 and 1.8 times the background values, respectively. Meanwhile, increasedcontents of Arsenic (up to 21.1 mg/kg) were detected in all sites. Correlations and PCA suggest that lithogenicsources controlled metal deposition, while most sediment arsenic was agriculture-derived. Organic matter actedas a sink or source for some trace metals. According to EFs, the study area showed slight to moderate enrichmentwith respect to Ag, As, Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu, whereas they remained uncontaminated with Cr, V, Co and Ni. Thisstudy provides a needed baseline for future environmental investigations.

International audience | The biomonitoring of metallic contamination in marine ecosystems is often focused on animal species of commercial interest and in lesser extent on non-model marine invertebrates. The aim of this study was to compare the metal concentrations (Li, Al, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb) in seven marine sponges with a particular interest in the homoscleromorph sponge Oscarella lobularis at different sites of the Bay of Marseille, France. Inter-species variabilities suggest that the seven sponge species studied accumulate metals differently. In O. lobularis, a multi-site analysis shows different bioaccumulation between the eight sampled populations. These inter-site differences may reflect differences in the hydrodynamic features and in past and present industrial activities. Because Oscarella lobularis shows a homogeneous metal accumulation pattern in comparison with the other tested species, it appears to be suitable for metal contamination biomonitoring in Mediterranean coastal waters, in particular of the coralligenous communities.

International audience | Oceanic and deep-sea ecosystems play a key role in the cycling and vertical transfer of matter and energy in oceans. Their pelagic communities act as major components sustaining higher trophic level predators. Despite their location far from direct anthropogenic sources, deep-sea organism contamination by persistent organic pollutants has been proven, especially in demersal and benthic species. However, deep pelagic species have been far less studied, without mentioning contaminants of emerging concern. To fill these gaps, we studied the occurrence of a large variety of hydrophobic organic contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), various brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their replacement substances BTBPE (1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane) and DBDPE (decabromodiphenylethane), and finally per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in crustaceans and fish species collected in the deep pelagic waters of the Bay of Biscay, northeast Atlantic. The results highlighted the global predominance of PCBs (detection frequencies and concentrations) in fish, with mean concentrations of 54.42 ± 28.57 ng g -1 dry weight (dw), followed by OCPs (21.73 ± 21.26 ng g -1 dw), PFASs (11.95 ± 9.58 ng g -1 dw) and PBDEs (mean of 1.50 ± 1.12 ng g -1 dw). The concentrations showed moderate intra-species variability (21–38%) but were highly variable among species (43–87%). Total lipid contents were also highly variable (from 4.3% ± 0.9% to 51% dw in crustaceans and from 6.1% ± 0.1% to 41.9% ± 9.6% dw for fish) and showed little correlation with lipophilic contaminant concentrations. Most of the chlorinated or brominated contaminants showed increasing concentrations with increasing δ15N values, while most PFASs showed inverse trends. Hexa/heptachlorinated PCBs, DDTs and BDE-209 were the predominant compounds among chlorinated and brominated contaminants, while long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) prevailed among PFASs in most species. The contaminant profiles and diagnostic ratios revealed species-specific metabolic capacities.

To fill these gaps, we studied the occurrence of a large variety of hydrophobic organic contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), legacy and alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in crustaceans and fish species collected in the Bay of Biscay, northeast Atlantic. The results highlighted the global predominance of PCBs in fish, followed by OCPs, PFASs and PBDEs, with highly variable concentrations among species. Most of the chlorinated or brominated contaminants showed increasing concentrations with increasing δ15N values, while most PFASs showed inverse trends. The contaminant profiles and diagnostic ratios revealed species-specific metabolic capacities and peculiar contribution of highly-brominated BFRs.

International audience | Surface seawater, collected from three fishing harbors during different seasons of the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, were assessed for physico-chemical analyses. Results showed that seawater was mainly polluted by hydrocarbons and some heavy metals. Microbial communities' composition and abundance in the studied harbors were per-formed using molecular approaches. SSCP analysis indicated the presence of Bacteria, Archaea and Eucarya, with dominance of the bacterial domain. Illumina Miseq analysis revealed that the majority of the sequences were affiliated with Bacteria whereas Archaea were detected at low relative abundance. The bacterial community, dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Chloro-flexi phyla, are known to be involved in a variety of biodegradation/biotransformation processes including hydrocarbons degradation and heavy metals resistance. The main objectives of this study are to assess, for the first time, the organic/inorganic pollution in surface seawater of Kerkennah Islands harbors, and to explore the potential of next generation marine microbiome monitoring to achieve the planning coastal managing strategies worldwide.
