The episodic outbreak of COVID-19 due to SARS-CoV-2 is severely affecting the economy, and the global count of infected patients is increasing. The actual number of patients had been underestimated due to limited facilities for testing as well as asymptomatic nature of the expression of COVID-19 on individual basis. Tragically, for emerging economies with high population density, the situation has been more complex due to insufficient testing facilities for diagnosis of the disease. However, the recent reports about persistent shedding of viral RNA of SARS-CoV-2 in the human feces have created a possibility to track the prevalence and trends of the disease in communities, known as wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). In this article, we highlight the current limitations and future prospects for WBE to manage pandemics.

The seasonal bioaccumulation of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) in sea snail (Hexaplex trunculus) and sea cucumber (Holothuria polii) from Mar Menor lagoon were characterised. The highest concentrations of p,p'-DDE were detected in the central and south part of Mar Menor lagoon. However, the highest concentrations of metals in sea snail and holothurians were detected in the influence area of El Beal wadi. Biomagnification factors (BMF) in sea snail from cockle (sea snail-cockle concentration ratio) were higher than 5 for metal and organochlorinated compounds. However, similar concentrations were observed in both species for PAHs due to gastropods capability of metabolising these pollutants. Consequently, sea snail is proposed as a sentinel for trace metals, PCBs and OCPs in the coastal lagoons, not only due to its bioaccumulation and biomagnification capacity but also the easy sampling and amply distribution in many coastal areas.

The development of toxic compounds in sediment and macrobenthos species in Hangzhou bay (2003–2015) was evaluated. Concentrations were compared to Chinese sediment quality guidelines (CN-SQG) and risk assessed by the ecological risk index (ERI) and t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding (t-SNE). To study seafood contamination, sediment and swimming crabs were collected. Chromium, copper, and arsenic exceeded CN-SQG. Organic contaminants did not exceed CN-SQG; however, t-SNE revealed a negative relationship with benthic species numbers. Since 2003, half of the benthic species have disappeared. Species sensitive to contamination were not observed after 2003–2007, while crustacea species are more tolerant: cadmium levels in crabs were 5–17 times those in the sediment, demonstrating strong bioaccumulation. These results suggest that metals and organic pollutants pose ecological and seafood risks. For good environmental management in HZB, it is important to analyze sediment, benthic biota, and seafood species for compounds known to pose toxic risks.

To improve our knowledge of the factors regulating Phaeocystis globosa colony formation, the effects of the diatom Ditylum brightwellii on P. globosa colony development were investigated using co-culture and cell-free filtrate approaches. The co-culture experiments showed the moderate abundance of D. brightwellii significantly increased the number and size of colonies, whereas a dramatically decreased effect from high abundance of D. brightwellii. The low abundance of D. brightwellii promoted early formation of P. globosa colony. The cell-free filtrate experiments indicated that culture-filtrates from the exponential phase of D. brightwellii were stimulatory for P. globosa colony formation with more and bigger colonies formed, whereas an inhibitory effect from its senescence phase filtrates. D. brightwellii may influence P. globosa colony formation by regulating the growth of P. globosa solitary cells. Our results suggest that D. brightwellii influences P. globosa colony development, but its effects vary according to its concentrations and growth phases.

Marine oil spills pose a significant threat to ocean and coastal ecosystems. In addition to costs incurred by response activities, an economic burden could be experienced by stakeholders dependent on coastal resources. Decision support tools for oil spill response (OSR-DSTs) have been playing an important role during oil spill response operations. This paper aims to provide an insight into the status of research on OSR-DSTs and identify future directions. Specifically, a systematic review is conducted including an examination of the advantages and limitations of currently applied and emerging decision support techniques for oil spill response. In response to elevated environmental concerns for protecting the polar ecosystem, the review includes a discussion on the use of OSR-DSTs in cold regions. Based on the analysis of information acquired, recommendations for future work on the development of OSR-DSTs to support the selection and implementation of spill response options are presented.

Chemical pollution is a major environmental concern especially in coastal areas, having adverse impacts on marine organisms and ecosystem services. Macroalgae can accumulate trace elements, but available studies are restricted to a limited number of elements and species. The goal of this research was to assess, seasonally, the concentrations of 22 elements in the brown alga Padina pavonica from monitoring sampling sites in Slovenian waters. The concentration of most elements in thalli differed significantly between spring and autumn, with generally higher levels in autumn samples. However, it was not possible to correlate these concentrations with the ecological status of macroalgae. The maximum values set by European regulations for the potentially hazardous As, Cd and Hg in food and feed were never exceeded, while Pb concentrations were slightly higher. The results show that P. pavonica can act as an effective bioindicator of chemical pollution.

The purpose of this work was to use the deep-water chimaera Hydrolagus colliei to examine the bioaccumulation and availability of Hg and Se in its deep-water habitat; the Se:Hg molar ratio was calculated to establish baseline information of the species and its associated ecosystem. The organisms were collected from northern Gulf of California. Hg levels in muscle were higher than liver and the opposite pattern happened with Se concentrations. Female had total lengths and weights higher than male but there were not found differences between elements concentrations by sex. Hg in muscle was correlated with weight. Molar Se:Hg ratio in muscle was the lowest compared to the liver. It was hypothesized that Hg and Se uptake to H. colliei were by its feeding habits because is a dominant species component of the demersal ecosystem and that play and important functional role in the control of oceanic ecosystem structure and function.

Twenty biota species were collected from the Northern Beibu Gulf to understand the heavy metal pollution status and biomagnification characteristics. Mean concentrations (μg/g) of Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, As, Cu, and Cd in the biota species were 0.99, 38.33, 0.14, 0.079, 0.085, 51.10, 7.92, and 0.21, respectively. As levels in most biota species exceeded the corresponding guidelines. Crabs were detected with high metal accumulation ability for each heavy metal except Pb. The ranges of δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C in organisms were from 8.0‰ to 15.6‰ and from −21.4‰ to −15.6‰, respectively. Cr, Mn, Ni, and As showed potential biomagnification trends in the food webs. The EDI values of these elements decreased by the sequence of As > Zn > Cu > Mn > Cd > Pb > Ni > Cr. High THQ and CR values for As indicated a potential health risk by consumption of these aquatic products.

On December 23rd, 2020 in the Marajó Bay, Amazon estuary, we found a specimen of Plagioscion squamosissimus floating dead and choked and suffocated by a plastic bag. Here, we presented images of record and discuss the rarity and factors that may be involved in this to date unreported plastic-animal interaction for bony fishes.

To examine whether a country-wide COVID-19 lockdown affected phytoplankton development, variability of chlorophyll-a concentrations in the north-western Arabian/Persian Gulf (Kuwait Bay) was investigated using remote sensing instruments Sentinel OLCI between 2018 and 2020 and compared to available in situ collected data. Satellite-retrieved chlorophyll concentrations considerably increased in inshore waters of Kuwait Bay, 1–2 months following the initiation of the 24/7 curfew. The extremely high concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients, especially ammonia, and coincided phytoplankton bloom were revealed in June-July 2020 by opportunity field sampling, supporting the satellite-derived bloom detection. Remote sensing operational monitoring with high spatial resolution sensors provides an exceptional opportunity for emergency analysis and decision making in conditions of natural or anthropogenic crises, which forces the development of regional remote sensing algorithms for the shallow marine environment of the Gulf.
