The desorption kinetics and mechanism were investigated using a Tenax extraction technique on different sediments spiked with radiocarbon-labeled benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). Five sedimentary fractions were sequentially fractionated, and the only nonhydrolyzable organic carbon fractions (NHC) were characterized using advanced solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), improved six end-member model, and a CO2 gas adsorption technique. The sediments contained high percentages of algaenan and/or sporopollenin but low percentages of black carbon and lignin. A first-order, two-compartment kinetics model described the desorption process very well (R2 > 0.990). Although some of the organic carbon fractions were significantly related to the desorption kinetics parameters, the NHC fractions showed the highly significant correlation. Moreover, the nanoporosity or specific surface area (SSA) of the NHC fractions was highly related to their OC contents and aliphatic C (R2 = 0.960, p < 0.01). The multiple regression equations among the desorption kinetics parameters, structural parameters, and nanoporosity were well established (R2=>0.999). Nanoporosity and aromatic C were the dominant contributors. Furthermore, the enhanced percentages of desorbed BaP at elevated temperatures significantly showed a linear regression with the structure and nanoporosity. To our knowledge, the above evidence demonstrates for the first time that the transfer (or diffusion) of BaP in the nanopores of condensed aromatic components is the dominant mechanism of the desorption kinetics of BaP at organic matter particle scale.

The practice of incorporating post-harvest crop waste is widely used because it maintains soil fertility and avoids environmental pollution from straw burning. However, the practice of straw incorporation may also retain the pesticides that are applied to crop plants, which may pose a potential long term risk to local and regional environments if the applied pesticide is a Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic (PBT) substance or a Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP). Here we investigate the influence of the “receiving-retention-release” route on the distribution of a POP pesticide (endosulfan) and the associated environmental risk among different environmental compartments. Our study indicates that most endosulfan enters the atmosphere (φatmosphere = 64.5–72.5%), which is dominated by the indirect route of volatilization from crop plants (φatmosphere, indirect = 54.7–70.3%). In contrast, soil releases are minor (φsoil = 10.8–20.5%), and are dominated by direct release during application (φsoil, direct = 8.0–18.0%). Under the practice of straw incorporation, the use of endosulfan posed an environmental risk to agricultural soil. In addition, the atmospheric deposition of endosulfan also posed an environmental risk to sediment. The study highlights the significance of the “receiving-retention-release” route by crop plants in determining the fate of POP pesticides associated with straw incorporation; hence complementing the current methodology for assessing the environmental risk of these compounds.

Sydney Harbour, Australia is contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) due to a historical Union Carbide chemical manufacturing facility. We measured levels of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in over 400 seafood samples (covering 20 species) collected throughout Sydney Harbour. Concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 193 pg total TEQ (WHO05)/g wet weight. These concentrations were above those considered safe for human consumption in many cases. Dioxin accumulation varied among species and was associated with life history traits. Mobile species had elevated concentrations throughout Sydney Harbour whereas accumulation in species likely to move less widely was dependent on the distance they were caught from the point source. This large scale study on multiple species of recreationally caught seafood resulted in the implementation of human consumption advisories for recreational fishing based on individual species and distance from point source. In addition, all forms of commercial fishing in Sydney Harbour were banned.

Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in ecosystems is an important criterion for assessing environmental risks of contaminants. This study investigated bioaccumulation and biomagnification of 13 organic ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs) in marine wildlife organisms in the Pearl River Estuary, South China Sea. The UVAs could accumulate in the organisms with biota - sediment accumulation factors (BSAF) of 0.003–2.152. UV531 was the most abundant and showed the highest tendency to accumulate in the organisms with a median BSAF of 1.105. The UVAs demonstrated species - and compound-specific accumulation in the marine organism. Fishes showed significantly higher capability than the cephalopods and crustaceans in accumulation of the UVAs. Habitat did not demonstrate obvious impact on accumulation of the UVA. On the other hand, benzophenone-3, UV328, and UV234 showed significantly higher concentration in the detritus feeding fishes than carnivorous and planktivorous fishes, suggesting governing effect of dietary habits of the organisms on bioaccumulation of these UVAs. Direct uptake from growth media was a significant exposure pathway of the organisms to the UVAs. The estimated trophic magnification factors and biomagnification factors revealed that UV329, UV531, and octocrylene could potentially biomagnify in the marine food web.

Uptake of selenium (Se) by plants largely depend on the availability of Se in soil. Soils and plants were sampled four times within 8 weeks of plant growth in pot experiments using four plant species. Sequential extraction and diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) method were employed to measure Se concentrations in potted soils in selenite- or selenate-amended soils. Results showed that DGT-measured Se concentrations (CDGT−Se) were generally several folds higher for selenate than selenite amended soils, which were obviously affected by the plant species and the duration of their growth. For example, the folds in soil planted with mustard were 1.49–3.47 and those in soils planted with purple cabbage and broccoli, which grew for 3 and 4 weeks after sowing, were 1.06–2.14 and only 0.15–0.62 after 6 weeks of growth. The selenate-amended soil planted with wheat showed an extremely high CDGT−Se compared with selenite-amended soil, except the last harvest. Furthermore, minimal changes in CDGT−Se and soluble Se(IV) were found in selenite-amended soils during plant growth, whereas significant changes were observed in selenate-amended soils (p < 0.05). Additionally, Se distribution in various fractions of soil remarkably changed; the soils planted with purple cabbage and broccoli showed the most obvious change followed by wheat and mustard. Soluble Se(VI) and exchangeable Se(VI) were likely the major sources of CDGT−Se in selenate-amended soils, and soluble Se(IV) was the possible source of CDGT−Se in selenite-amended soils. In selenate-amended soils, soluble Se(VI) and exchangeable Se(VI) were significantly correlated with Se concentrations in purple cabbage, broccoli, and mustard; in wheat, Se concentration was significantly correlated only with soluble Se(VI) but not with exchangeable Se. CDGT−Se eventually became positively correlated with Se concentrations accumulated by different plants, indicating that DGT is a feasible method in predicting plant uptake of selenate but not of selenite.

Previous studies have suggested that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with pediatric hospital admissions and emergency room visits for certain respiratory diseases; however, there is limited evidence on the association between short-term air pollution exposure and pediatric outpatient visits. Our aim was to quantitatively assess the short-term effects of ambient air pollution on pediatric outpatient visits for respiratory diseases. We conducted a time-series study in Yichang city, China between Jan 1, 2014 and Dec 31, 2015. Daily counts of pediatric respiratory outpatient visits were collected from 3 large hospitals, and then linked with air pollution data from 5 air quality monitoring stations by date. We used generalized additive Poisson models to conduct linear and nonlinear exposure-response analyses between air pollutant exposures and pediatric respiratory outpatient visits, adjusting for seasonality, day of week, public holidays, temperature, and relative humidity. Each interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5 (lag 0), PM10 (lag 0), NO2 (lag 0), CO (lag 0), and O3 (lag 4) concentrations was significantly associated with a 1.91% (95% CI: 0.60%, 3.23%), 2.46% (1.09%, 3.85%), 1.88% (0.49%, 3.29%), 2.00% (0.43%, 3.59%), and 1.91% (0.45%, 3.39%) increase of pediatric respiratory outpatient visits, respectively. Similarly, the nonlinear exposure-response analyses showed monotonic increases of pediatric respiratory outpatient visits by increasing air pollutant exposures, though the associations for NO2 and CO attenuated at higher concentrations. These associations were unlikely modified by season. We did not observe significant association for SO2 exposure. Our results suggest that short-term exposures to PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO, and O3 may account for increased risk of pediatric outpatient visits for respiratory diseases, and emphasize the needs for reduction of air pollutant exposures for children.

Five different domestic heating boilers (automatic, over-fire, with down-draft combustion and gasification) and three types of fuel (lignite, wood and mixed fuel) were examined in 25 combustion tests and correlated with the emissions of particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), total organic carbon (TOC) and 12 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs with MW = 178–278 g/mol) focusing on particle phase. However, the distribution of 12 PAHs in gas phase was considered as well due to the presence mainly of lighter PAHs in gas phase. The PAHs, as well as the CO and TOC, are the indicators of incomplete combustion, and in this study PAH emission increased significantly with increasing emissions of CO and TOC. The PAHs were mainly detected on PM2.5, their contents were increasing linearly with increasing PM2.5 emissions. The highest emission factors of PAHs were measured for boilers of old construction, such as over-fire boiler (5.8–929 mg/kg) and boiler with down-draft combustion (3.1–54.1 mg/kg). Modern types of boilers produced much lower emissions of PAHs, in particular, automatic boiler (0.3–3.3 mg/kg) and gasification boilers (0.2–6.7 mg/kg). In general, the inefficient combustion at reduced output of boilers generated 1.4–17.7 times more emissions of PAHs than the combustion at nominal output of boilers. It is recommended to operate boilers at nominal output with sufficient air supply and to use the proper fuel to minimise PAHs emissions from domestic heating appliances.

This study examined effects of short-term urban air pollution exposures on inflammation, thrombosis, and autonomic imbalance in subjects at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We enrolled 61 patients with multiple CVD risk factors and measured high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), fibrinogen, D-dimer, and heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Two health examinations for each participant were performed during December 2002 through September 2003. Changes in inflammation and thrombotic markers and HRV indices with exposures to PM2.5, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) at 1- to 3-day lags were analyzed using mixed models. The results showed inflammatory and thrombotic markers increased with 1- to 3-day lagged PM2.5 components and gaseous pollutants exposures. hs-CRP maximally increased 0.19 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.07–0.31] and 0.15 (95% CI: 0.05–0.24) mg/L for an interquartile range (IQR) of 1-day lagged SO2 (2.3 ppb) and CO (0.5 ppm), respectively. D-dimer maximally increased 1.05 (95% CI: 0.13–1.75), 0.72 (95% CI: 0.09–1.21), 0.92 (95% CI: 0.13–1.50), and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.07–1.61) mg/dL for an IQR of 1-day lagged OC (3.9 μg/m3), EC (2.0 μg/m3), SO2, and NO2 (13.4 ppb), respectively. The HRV indices, including low frequency, very low frequency, and the ratio of low frequency to high frequency decreased 19.8 (95% CI: 4.4–32.7), 12.9 (95% CI: 0.8–23.4), and 17.6 (95% CI: 5.4–28.2)% for an IQR of 1-day lagged PM2.5 (20.2 μg/m3), respectively. Our findings demonstrated PM2.5 components and gaseous pollutants exert prolonged inflammatory and thrombotic reactions, while PM2.5 exert an immediate autonomic imbalance.

Air quality is closely related to quality of life. Air pollution forecasting plays a vital role in air pollution warnings and controlling. However, it is difficult to attain accurate forecasts for air pollution indexes because the original data are non-stationary and chaotic. The existing forecasting methods, such as multiple linear models, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and support vector regression (SVR), cannot fully capture the information from series of pollution indexes. Therefore, new effective techniques need to be proposed to forecast air pollution indexes. The main purpose of this research is to develop effective forecasting models for regional air quality indexes (AQI) to address the problems above and enhance forecasting accuracy. Therefore, two hybrid models (EMD-SVR-Hybrid and EMD-IMFs-Hybrid) are proposed to forecast AQI data. The main steps of the EMD-SVR-Hybrid model are as follows: the data preprocessing technique EMD (empirical mode decomposition) is utilized to sift the original AQI data to obtain one group of smoother IMFs (intrinsic mode functions) and a noise series, where the IMFs contain the important information (level, fluctuations and others) from the original AQI series. LS-SVR is applied to forecast the sum of the IMFs, and then, S-ARIMA (seasonal ARIMA) is employed to forecast the residual sequence of LS-SVR. In addition, EMD-IMFs-Hybrid first separately forecasts the IMFs via statistical models and sums the forecasting results of the IMFs as EMD-IMFs. Then, S-ARIMA is employed to forecast the residuals of EMD-IMFs. To certify the proposed hybrid model, AQI data from June 2014 to August 2015 collected from Xingtai in China are utilized as a test case to investigate the empirical research. In terms of some of the forecasting assessment measures, the AQI forecasting results of Xingtai show that the two proposed hybrid models are superior to ARIMA, SVR, GRNN, EMD-GRNN, Wavelet-GRNN and Wavelet-SVR. Therefore, the proposed hybrid models can be used as effective and simple tools for air pollution forecasting and warning as well as for management.

Coexistence of heavy metals and organic contaminants in coastal ecosystems may lead to complicated circumstances in ecotoxicological assessment for biological communities due to potential interactions of contaminants. Consequences of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) co-contamination on coastal marine microbes at the community level were paid less attention. We chose cadmium (Cd) and phenanthrene (PHE) as representatives of metals and PAHs, respectively, and mimicked contaminations using coastal water microcosms spiked with Cd (1 mg/L), PHE (1 mg/L), and their mixture over two weeks. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to compare individual and cumulative effects of Cd and PHE on temporal succession of bacterioplankton communities. Although we found dramatic impacts of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO, used as a carrier solvent for PHE) on bacterial α-diversity and composition, the individual and cumulative effects of Cd and PHE on bacterial α-diversity were temporally variable showing an antagonistic pattern at early stage in the presence of DMSO. Temporal succession of bacterial community composition (BCC) was associated with temporal variability of water physicochemical parameters, each of which explained more variation in BCC than two target contaminants did. However, Cd, PHE, and their mixture distinctly altered the successional trajectories of BCC, while only the effect of Cd was retained at the end of experiment, suggesting certain resilience in BCC after the complete dissipation of PHE along the temporal trajectory. Moreover, bacterial assemblages at the genus level associated with the target contaminants were highly time-dependent and more unpredictable in the co-contamination group, in which some genera possessing hydrocarbon-degrading members might contribute to PHE degradation. These results provide preliminary insights into how co-exposure of Cd and PHE phylogenetically alters successional trajectories of bacterioplankton communities in the manipulated coastal water microcosms.
