Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic disease worldwide. Ambient air pollution has long been proven to be associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) progression, but the underlying mechanism is not clear yet. In addition, previous studies mainly focused on the prevention of healthy people against the incidence of T2DM. We designed a panel study including two follow-ups and enrolled 39 patients with T2DM living in Beijing. Linear mixed model was fitted to assess the association between two pairs of variables (ambient air pollution exposure and C3 levels, ambient air pollution exposures and T2DM index). Mediation analysis of C3 between ambient air pollution exposure and indicators of T2DM progression was conducted. We found that PM2.5 exposures is are negatively associated with serum complement C3. Given that C3 might act as a protector of pancreas β cell, PM2.5 exposures could accelerate disease in T2DM populations. No mediation effects were found. This study reveals that exposures to PM2.5 can cause progression of diseases among T2DM populations.

Procaine penicillin (PP) is a β-lactam antibiotic widely used in human and veterinary medicine. Although PP is detected in surface water, little is known on its effects on aquatic invertebrates. Our aim was to determine the influence of PP on swimming behaviour (track density, swimming speed, turning angle, hopping frequency) and physiological activity (oxygen consumption, heart rate, thoracic limb movement) of a freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna exposed to PP at concentrations of 11.79 mg/L, 117.9 mg/L and 1179 mg/L for 2 h and 24 h. The results showed no mortality; however, reduction of swimming activity manifested by the decreased track density, swimming speed and turning angle noted in Daphnia exposed to all the concentrations of PP. Increase of oxygen consumption was observed after 2-h exposure; however, decrease of this parameter was found after 24 h. PP also reduced heart rate and thoracic limb movement in a concentration-dependent manner. The results suggest that the antibiotic should not induce mortality; however, it may affect swimming behaviour and physiological parameters of Daphnia magna particularly inhabiting aquaculture facilities with intensive antibiotic treatment. On the basis of the present results, we also suggest higher sensitivity of behavioural and physiological parameters of cladocerans than the commonly used endpoints: mortality or immobilisation and their possible application as a part of early warning systems in monitoring of surface water toxicity.

This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability of major and trace elements, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in surface waters of several hydrosystems of the Loire River watershed in France. In particular, this study aims to delineate the impact of the abovementioned water physicochemical parameters on natural iron and manganese physical speciation (homoaggregation/heteroaggregation) among fine colloidal and dissolved (< 10 nm), colloidal (10–450 nm) and particulate (> 450 nm) phases in Loire River watershed. Results show that the chemistry of the Loire River watershed is controlled by two end members: magmatic and metamorphic petrographic context on the upper part of the watershed; and sedimentary rocks for the middle and low part of the Loire. The percentage of particulate Fe and Mn increased downstream concurrent with the increase in SPM and major cations concentration, whereas the percentage of colloidal Fe and Mn decreased downstream. Transmission electron microscopy analyses of the colloidal and particulate fractions (from the non-filtered water sample) revealed that heteroaggregation of Fe and Mn rich natural nanoparticles and natural organic matter to the particulate phase is the dominant mechanism. The heteroaggregation controls the partitioning of Fe and Mn in the different fractions, potentially due to the increase in the ionic strength, and divalent cations concentration downstream, and SPM concentration. These findings imply that SPM concentration plays an important role in controlling the fate and behavior of Fe and Mn in various sized fractions. Graphical abstract Physical speciation by heteroaggregation of (Fe-Mn) compounds: high [SPM] → [Fe-Mn] particulate faction; low {SPM] → [Fe-Mn] colloid-dissolved fraction.

Renewable resources are playing a key role on the synthesis of biodegradable polyols. Moreover, the incorporation of covalently linked additives is increasing in importance in the polyurethane (PU) market. In this work, previously epoxidized grape seed oil and methyl oleate were transformed into phosphorylated biopolyols through an acid-catalyzed ring-opening hydrolysis in the presence of H₃PO₄. The formation of phosphate polyesters was confirmed by FT-IR and ³¹P-NMR. However, the synthesis of a high-quality PU rigid foam was not possible using exclusively these polyols attending to their low hydroxyl value. In that way, different rigid PU foams were prepared from the phosphorylated biopolyols and the commercial polyol Alcupol R4520. It was observed that phosphorylated biopolyols can be incorporated up to a 57 wt.% in the PU synthesis without significant structural changes with respect to the commercial foam. Finally, thermogravimetric and EDAX analyses revealed an improvement of thermal stability by the formation of a protective phosphorocarbonaceous char layer.

Apergis, Nicholas | Garćıa, Claudia
Environmental policies are a significant cornerstone of a developed economy, but the question that arises is whether such policies lead to a sustainable growth path. It is clear that the energy sector plays a pivotal role in environmental policies, and although the current literature has focused on examining the link between energy consumption and economic growth through an abundance of studies, it does not explicitly consider the role of institutional or governance quality variables in the process. Both globalization and democracy are important drivers of sustainability, while environmentalism is essential for the objective of gaining a “better world.” Governance quality is expected to be the key, not only for economic purposes but also for the efficiency of environmental policies. To that end, the analysis in this paper explores the link between governance quality and energy efficiency for the EU-28 countries, spanning the period 1995 to 2014. The findings document that there is a nexus between energy efficiency and income they move together: the most efficient countries are in the group with higher GDP per capita. Furthermore, the results show that governance quality is an important driver of energy efficiency and, hence, of environmental policies.

In this study, a new type of composite material, namely modified biochar (MBC), was synthesized by loading the magnetic ferromanganese oxide nanoparticles on pine biochar. BET, SEM, and FTIR were employed to analyze the surface properties and pore structures of MBC. In addition, XRD was adopted to examine the crystal structure of MBC. Characterization results showed that the surface area and porosity of MBC have been greatly improved, and the functional groups have been introduced by ferromanganese oxides. Adsorption experiments of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) including kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics as well as the influence of pH, salt ion strength, and the environmental risk of MBC, were evaluated. The results revealed that the experimental data conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. In the adsorption process, MBC showed excellent adsorption ability (maximum capacity for TC 100.74 mg g⁻¹) to BC (33.76 mg g⁻¹). In isotherm experiments, the maximum adsorption capacity of TC by MBC reached 177.71 mg g⁻¹. Toxicity studies showed that the MBC had no harm to the environment. To conclude, MBC has great potential for applications in removing TC from water.

We investigated the association between diabetes and p,p′-DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) in blood of Mexican Americans who participated in the 1999–2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In this sample, p,p′-DDT were missing in 50% of subjects and we used multiple imputation (MI) to address the problem. Compared to ignoring the missing data, MI led to a more robust threshold for the p,p′-DDT reference category. Whereas previously p,p′-DDT ≤ 0.0860 ng/g was used as the reference category, using MI, we were able to use p,p′-DDT < 0.0574 ng/g as the reference category to study the association between p,p′-DDT and diabetes via logistic regression. In this analysis, p,p′-DDT ≥ 0.0750 ng/g was associated with an odds ratio of 1.99 (95% CI 1.09–3.61) for diabetes and 4.20 (95% CI 1.93–9.12) for diabetic nephropathy. The reference category for diabetes without nephropathy outcome stayed consistent after MI but our analysis confirmed that p,p′-DDT > 0.0860 ng/g was associated with diabetes without nephropathy with an odds ratio of 1.89 (95% CI 1.09–3.27). Our study showed that MI can be effectively used to deal with missing at random data in persistent organic pollutants measured in the 1999–2004 NHANES.

This study deals with the evaluation of trace element bioaccumulation and histological alterations in the hepatopancreas of the supralittoral amphipod Orchestia montagui Audouin, 1826 due to the exposure to cadmium, copper, and zinc. Orchestia montagui individuals were maintained during 14 days in soils contaminated with different trace elements namely cadmium, copper, and zinc; a control was also prepared. Our results show that the mortality and the body mass vary according to the metal and the nominal concentration used. In general, the mortality increases from the seventh day. However, the body mass shows a decrease with cadmium exposure and an increase with copper and zinc exposures. Furthermore, the concentration factor highlights that this species is considered a macroconcentrator for copper and zinc. The hepatopancreas of unexposed and exposed animals were compared to detect histological changes. Our results show significant alterations in the hepatopancreas of the exposed animals after the experiment. The degree of these alterations was found to be dose-dependent. Among the histological changes in the hepatopancreas in O. montagui, a loss of cell structure was noted, especially cell remoteness and border lyses, the reduction of nuclear volume, an increase in the cytoplasm density with the presence of trace element deposits in both the nucleus and vacuoles, a disorganization and destruction of microvilli, and a condensation of the majority of cell organelles and mitochondria swelling. Through this study, we have confirmed that O. montagui can be a relevant model to assess trace metal element pollution in Tunisian coastal lagoons with the aim of using it in future biomonitoring programs.

Khan, Noor Hashim | Ju, Yanbing | Hassan, Syed Tauseef
In this modern era, the importance of information and communication technology (ICT) cannot be ignored for sustainable human development. However, Pakistan has experienced a considerable gap between ICT economic growth and human development. In this regard, this study has modeled the relationship between ICT, economic growth, and the human development index (HDI) considering urbanization, foreign direct investment (FDI), and trade for the period from 1990 to 2014. An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and vector error correction model (VECM) approaches are used to analyze the data. The empirical results reveal that ICT promote human development index. Along with, economic growth has a positive and significant impact on human development. Besides, urbanization, trade, and FDI discourage human development in Pakistan. Finally, bidirectional causality is detected between the aforementioned variables. Recommendations to policymakers regarding the productive role of FDI and trade are provided.

The present paper describes the sono-assisted adsorption (sono-adsorption) of methylene blue (MB), methyl violet (MV), and Nile blue (NB) from aqueous solution by AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic composite. FT-IR, TGA-DTG, VSM, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, Map, and Raman analysis were used to characterize the magnetic composite. The magnetization saturation value of AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic composite was determined to be 53.06 emu/g. Dye sono-adsorption efficiency was increased by increasing adsorbent dose, pH value, and contact time, but not dye concentration. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were used to study the kinetic behavior of the cationic dye sono-adsorption. The sono-adsorption kinetics was reasonably followed by pseudo-second-order model (R² > 0.998). The results showed that the Freundlich model (R² > 0.976) was more able to describe the sono-adsorption equilibrium behavior than Langmuir, D-R, and Scatchard models. The maximum sono-adsorption capacity of NB, MV, and MB was determined as 86.24, 83.90, and 87.48 mg/g, respectively. Based on the parameters derived from isotherm modeling (RL, n, and E), the sono-adsorption process of cationic dyes is desirable and physical. An increase in NaCl concentration reduced the sono-adsorption efficiency for all dyes. Also, the adsorption-desorption of AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic was studied up to 10 stages, and it was confirmed that the sono-adsorption efficiency is acceptable up to the eight stage. AC/CoFe₂O₄ magnetic composite is, therefore, an affordable and recyclable adsorbent to remove the molecule of NB, MV, and MB dyes from aqueous media.
