In this study, graphene aerogel (GA) was successfully prepared through a simple hydrothermal method. The resulting GA exhibited a porous network structure with a large specific surface area (350.8 m²/g), ultra-light mass and easy separation from water. The pHIEP value of the GA was estimated to be 3.5. The adsorption process and the factors that affect adsorption capacity were studied. The adsorption could be conducted in a wide pH range from 2.0 to 7.0. The maximum adsorption capacity of GA towards U(VI) at pH 4.0 and T = 298 K was 238.67 mg/g calculated from the Langmuir model. The GA had greatly rapid adsorption property for the removal of U(VI) at pH 4.0. Kinetic data showed good correlation with pseudo-second-order equation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry characterizations showed that GA adsorbed U(VI) through chemical interaction by oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing groups functional groups. The results show that GA has excellent application potential as an adsorbent material for removing U(VI) from aqueous solution.

Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a plant-based chemical building block that could potentially substitute petroleum-based equivalents, yet ecotoxicological data of this compound is currently limited. In this study, the effects of HMF on the reproduction and survival of Daphnia magna were assessed through validated ecotoxicological tests. The mechanism of toxicity was determined by analysis of transcriptomic responses induced by exposure to different concentrations of HMF using RNA sequencing. HMF exerted toxicity to D. magna with an EC₅₀ for effects on reproduction of 17.2 mg/l. HMF exposure affected molecular pathways including sugar and polysaccharide metabolism, lipid metabolism, general stress metabolism and red blood cell metabolism, although most molecular pathways affected by HMF exposure were dose specific. Hemoglobin genes, however, responded in a sensitive and dose-related manner. No induction of genes involved in the xenobiotic metabolism or oxidative stress metabolism pathway could be observed, which contrasted earlier observations on transcriptional responses of the terrestrial model Folsomia candida exposed to the same compound in a similar dose. We found 4189 orthologue genes between D. magna and F. candida, yet only twenty-one genes of those orthologues were co-regulated in both species. The contrasting transcriptional responses to the same compound exposed at a similar dose between D. magna and F. candida indicates limited overlap in stress responses among soil and aquatic invertebrates. The dose-related expression of hemoglobin provides further support for using hemoglobin expression as a biomarker for general stress responses in daphnids.

The application of compost in agriculture has led to the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs) in the soil environment. In this study, the response of ARGs and MRGs to bamboo charcoal (BC) and bamboo vinegar (BV) during aerobic composting was investigated. Results showed that BC + BV treatment reduced the abundances of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) during the thermophilic period, as well as achieved the lowest rebound during the cooling period. BC + BV promoted the growth of Firmicutes, thereby facilitating the thermophilic period of composting. The rebound of ARGs and MGEs can be explained by increasing the abundance of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria at the end of composting. Composting reduced the abundances of MRGs comprising pcoA, tcrB, and cueO, whereas cusA and copA indicated the selective pressure imposed by heavy metals on bacteria. The fate of ARGs was mainly driven by MGEs, and heavy metals explained most of the variation in MRGs. Interestingly, nitrogen conversion also had an important effect on ARG and MRG profiles. Our current findings suggest that the addition of BC + BV during compost preparation is an effective method in controlling the mobility of ARGs and MRGs, thereby reducing the environmental problems.

Knowledge of the transport and fate of pathogenic Escherichia coli, especially in the areas contaminated with crude oil, is required to assess contamination of shallow groundwater resources. The present study aims to investigate the effect of crude oil-mediated water repellency on the movement of nalidixic acid-resistant Escherichia coli strain (E. coli NAR) and bromide (Br) as an inert tracer in two soil types. The soils were contaminated at three levels of 0, 0.5 and 1% w/w of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) using crude oil. Steady-state saturated flow in the soil columns was controlled using a tension infiltrometer. Leaching experiments were conducted through the columns of repacked (un-weathered) and physically-weathered clay loam (CL) and sandy loam (SL) soils. The columns leachate was sampled at specific times for 4 pore volumes. The shape of breakthrough curves for the E. coli NAR and Br depended on soil texture and structure and the TPHs level. Preferential flow in the crude oil-mediated water-repellent soils facilitated the transport of contaminants especially E. coli NAR. Filtration coefficient and relative adsorption index of bacteria were greatest in the repacked CL soils and were lowest in the weathered SL soils. Discontinuity of soil pores and lower flow velocity resulted in greater filtration of E. coli NAR in the repacked CL soil than other treatments. Physical weathering induced the formation of aggregates which reduced soil particle surfaces available for retention of water-repellent oil and contaminants. Movement of both bacteria and Br tracer in the weathered SL soil with 1% TPHs was higher than other treatments. This finding was attributed to low specific surface area, continuity of the pores and water repellency-mediated preferential pathways in the weathered SL soil columns. Our findings implied that shallow groundwater resources could be very sensitive to microbial contamination particularly in the oil-mediated water-repellent soils.

Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs) are common chemical additives in expanded polystyrene foam (EPS). To evaluate the bioaccumulation potential of endogenous HBCDDs in EPS microparticles by earthworms, two ecologically different species of earthworms (Eisenia fetida and Metaphire guillelmi) were exposed to soil added with EPS microparticles of different particle sizes (EPS2000, 830–2000 μm and EPS830, <830 μm). To clarify the accumulation mechanisms, leaching experiments using EPS microparticles in different solutions were conducted. After exposure to EPS microparticles-amended soils (S-EPS) for 28 d, the total concentrations of HBCDDs reached 307–371 ng g−1 dw in E. fetida and 90–133 ng g−1 dw in M. guillelmi, which were higher than those in earthworms exposed to the soil that was artificially contaminated with a similar level of HBCDDs directly (ACS). The accumulation of HBCDDs in earthworms was significantly influenced by EPS microparticles' size and earthworms' species. The total concentrations of HBCDDs in earthworms' cast were significantly higher than the theoretical concentration of HBCDDs in S-EPS, which suggested that EPS microparticles can be ingested by earthworms. The release rate of HBCDDs from EPS5000 (2000–5000 μm) into water-based solutions (<1%) after a 3.5-h incubation was far lower than that into earthworm digestive fluid (7%). These results illustrated that the ingestion of EPS microparticles and consequent solubilization of HBCDDs by digestive fluid play an important role in the accumulation of HBCDDs contained in EPS microparticles in earthworms. After a 28-d incubation with the soil solution, 4.9% of the HBCDDs was accumulatively leached from the EPS5000, which indicated that HBCDDs can be released from EPS microparticles to soil environment, and then accumulated by earthworms. Moreover, similar to those exposed to ACS, the diastereoisomer- and enantiomer-specific accumulation of HBCDDs in earthworms occurred when exposed to S-EPS. This study provides more evidence for the risk of microplastics to the soil ecosystem.

The cobalt ferrite-reduced oxidized graphene (CoFe2O4/rGO) catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauere Emmette Teller (BET) and Hysteresis loop. For developing a new method of removing elemental mercury (Hg0) from flue gas, the effects of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, solution pH and reaction temperature on the removal efficiency were investigated experimentally by using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalyzed by CoFe2O4/rGO at a self-made bubbling reactor. The average removal efficiency of Hg0 in a 30-min period reached 95.56%, when CoFe2O4/rGO dosage was 0.288 g/L, PMS concentration was 3.5 mmol/L, solution pH was 5.5 and reaction temperature was 55 °C. Meanwhile, based on the free radical quenching experiments, in which, ethyl alcohol and tert butyl alcohol were used as quenchers to prove indirectly the presence of •OH and SO4•−, the characterizations of catalysts and reaction products, and the existing results from other scholars. The reaction mechanism was proposed.

Several organic contaminants (OCs) have been detected in bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) nestling (eaglet) plasma in the upper Midwestern United States. Despite frequent and relatively high concentrations of OCs in eaglets, little is understood about potential biological effects associated with exposure. We screened an existing database of OC concentrations in eaglet plasma collected from the Midwestern United States against bioactivity information from the ToxCast database. ToxCast bioactivity information consists of concentrations expected to elicit responses across a range of biological space (e.g. cellular, developmental, etc.) obtained from a series of high throughput assays. We calculated exposure—activity ratios (EAR) by calculating the ratio of plasma concentrations to concentrations available in ToxCast. Bioactivity data were not available for all detected OCs. Therefore, our analysis provides estimates of potential bioactivity for 19 of the detected OCs in eaglet plasma. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) EAR values were consistently the highest among all study areas. Maximum EAR values were ≥1 for PFOS, perfluorononanoic acid, and bisphenol A in 99.7, 0.53 and 0.26% of samples, indicating that some plasma concentrations were greater than what may be expected to elicit biological responses. About 125 gene targets, indicative of specific biological pathways, were identified as potentially being affected. Inhibition of several CYP genes, involved in xenobiotic metabolism, were most consistently identified. Other identified biological responses have potential implications for motor coordination, cardiac functions, behavior, and blood circulation. However, it is unclear what these results mean for bald eagles, given that ToxCast data are generated using mammalian-based endpoints. Despite uncertainties and limitations, this method of screening environmental data can be useful for informing future monitoring or research focused on understanding the occurrence and effects of OCs in bald eagles and other similarly-positioned trophic species.

Microplastics pose a great threat to entire marine ecosystems, but little is known about their impacts on phytoplankton, especially for the harmful dinoflagellates. In this study, effects of micro polyvinyl chloride (mPVC) on the growth, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency of the dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi at different periods (0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h) were assessed using gradient concentrations (0, 5, 25, 50 and 100 mg L⁻¹) of mPVC with a size of 1 μm. PVC microplastics had dose-dependent adverse effects on K. mikimotoi growth, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency. The density of algal cell decreased with increasing mPVC concentrations and the highest inhibitory rate (IR) was 45.8% at 24 h under 100 mg L⁻¹ of mPVC. The total chlorophyll content and chlorophyll content in a single algal cell decreased at 96 h and the ФPSⅡ and Fv/Fm decreased 25.3% and 17.1%, respectively. The SEM images provided an intuitive visual method to observe the behaviors and interactions between microplastics and microalgae. It was found from the SEM images that microalgae was wrapped by microplastic beads. The physical blockage and aggregation were also responsible for the cytotoxicity of K. mikimotoi. Our study clarified that PVC microplastics can reduce algal growth, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency, and it is beneficial to evaluate the possible impact of plastics on aquatic ecosystems.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are increasing used in commercial applications and may be released into the environment with anionic surfactants, such as sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), in sewer discharge. Little research has examined the transport, retention, and remobilization of MWCNTs in the presence or absence of SDBS in porous media with controlled chemical heterogeneity, and batch and column scale studies were therefore undertaken to address this gap in knowledge. The adsorption isotherms of SDBS on quartz sand (QS), goethite coated quartz sand (GQS), and MWCNTs were determined. Adsorption of SDBS (MWCNTs » GQS > QS) decreased zeta potentials for these materials, and produced a charge reversal for goethite. Transport of MWCNTs (5 mg L⁻¹) dramatically decreased with an increase in the fraction of GQS from 0 to 0.1 in the absence of SDBS. Conversely, co-injection of SDBS (10 and 50 mg L⁻¹) and MWCNTs radically increased the transport of MWCNTs when the GQS fraction was 0, 0.1, and 0.3, especially at a higher SDBS concentration, and altered the shape of retention profile. Mathematical modeling revealed that competitive blocking was not the dominant mechanism for the SDBS enhancement of MWCNT transport. Rather, SDBS sorption increased MWCNT transport by increasing electrostatic and/or steric interactions, or creating reversible interactions on rough surfaces. Sequential injection of pulses of MWCNTs and SDBS in sand (0.1 GQS fraction) indicated that SDBS could mobilize some of retained MWCNTs from the top to deeper sand layers, but only a small amount of released MWCNTs were recovered in the effluent. SDBS therefore had a much smaller influence on MWCNT transport in sequential injection than in co-injection, presumably because of a greater energy barrier to MWCNT release than retention. This research sheds novel insight on the roles of competitive blocking, chemical heterogeneity and nanoscale roughness, and injection sequence on MWCNT retention and release.

A total of 152 groundwater samples were collected around a contaminated site to evaluate the carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks of exposure to twelve volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHs) by oral ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation absorption during showering. Although toxicity data of some VCHs are fragmentary, the results showed that the carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks of exposure to VCHs in contaminated drinking groundwater for local residents needs immediate attention. The main risk contributors for the carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks are carbon tetrachloride and 1,1,2-trichloroethane through inhalation exposure pathway, respectively. The health risk contribution rates associated with three exposure pathways for a specific VCH were intrinsic to the compound, and the dermal contact corresponded to a negligible contribution for almost every VCH species. Although most of the evaluated VCHs had a higher risk contribution by inhalation than by oral ingestion pathway, the integrated multi-VCH health risk contributions of the three exposure pathways were mainly dependent on the VCH compositions. Drinking boiled water not only decreased the exposure risk but also affected the risk contribution rates of three exposure pathways, which indicates that it is feasible to reduce the risk of VCH exposure during daily activities based on the risk contribution of the exposure pathways. In addition to the VCHs included in the drinking water standards, species such as 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and hexachloroethane also showed a remarkable exposure health risk according to the standardized health risk calculation, which implied that improved drinking water standards are urgently required.
