International audience | Pollution from bromine and some of its related compounds is currently unregulated in soil from Russia and other countries,and tools for sound assessment of environmental impacts of bromine contamination are largely missing. Hence, assessingpotential implications for humans and ecosystems of bromine soil contamination is urgently needed, which requires the combi-nation of measured soil concentrations from environmental studies and quantified potential toxicity impacts. To address this need,we used data from an experimental study assessing bromine in soils (384 samples) of Tomsk oblast, Russia, starting frommeasured concentrations obtained by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis in an earlier study. From these data, we calcu-lated the bromine mass in soils and used these as starting point to characterize related cumulative impacts on human health andecosystems in the Tomsk region, using a global scientific consensus model for screening-level comparative toxicity character-ization of chemical emissions. Results show that the combination of sampling methodology with toxicity characterizationtechniques presents a new approach to be used in environmental studies aimed at environmental assessment and analysis of aterritory. Our results indicate that it is important to account for substance-specific chemical reaction pathways and transferprocesses, as well as to consider region-specific environmental characteristics. Our approach will help complement environmen-tal assessment results with environmental sustainability elements, to consider potential tradeoffs in impacts, related to soilpollution, in support of improved emission and pollution reduction strategies.

Sludge organic matter was characterized, thanks to chemical fractionation and 3D fluorescence deciphering its accessibility and biodegradability. Total chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 41% and 56% during anaerobic digestion and composting, respectively. 3D fluorescence highlighted the quality changes of organic matter. During continuous anaerobic digestion, organic micropollutants' removal was 22±14%, 6±5%, 18±9%, and 0% for fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, and nonylphenols, respectively. Discontinuous composting allowed to go further on the organic micropollutants' removal as 34±8%, 31±20%, 38±10%, and 52±6% of fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, and nonylphenols were dissipated, respectively. Moreover, the accessibility of PAH and NP expressed by their presence in the various sludge organic matter fractions and its evolution during both treatments was linked to both the quality evolution of the organic matter and the physicochemical properties of the PAH and NP; the presence in most accessible fractions explained the amount of PAH and NP dissipated.

Compared to antibiotic parent molecule, human metabolites are generally more polar and sometimes not less toxic in wastewater.However, most researches focus on the fate of parent molecule. Therefore, behaviors of human metabolites are little known.Moreover, though much has been done on the fate of antibiotics during activated sludge process, there are still some limitationsand gaps. In the present study, [Ring-14C] acetyl sulfamethoxazole (14C-Ac-SMX) was used to investigate the fate of humanmetabolite of SMX during activated sludge process at environmentally relevant concentration. At the end of 216 h, 3.1% of thespiked activity in the initial aqueous phase was mineralized, 50% was adsorbed onto the solid phase, and 36.5% still remained inthe aqueous phase, indicating that adsorption, not biodegradation, was the main dissipation pathway. In the existence of microbialactivities, accumulation into the solid phase was much higher, which was less bioavailable by chemical sequential extraction. Themultimedia kinetic model simultaneously depicted the fate of Ac-SMX in the gas, aqueous, and solid phases, and demonstratedthat microbially accelerated accumulation onto the solid phase was attributed to lower desorption rate from the solid phase to theaqueous phase, where adsorption rate was not the key factor. Therefore, Ac-SMX cannot be efficiently mineralized and remain inthe aqueous or the solid phases. The accumulation in the solid phase is less bioavailable and is hard to be desorbed in the existenceof microbial activities, and should not be easily degraded, and may lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria andgenes after discharge into the environment.

International audience | The potential use of a metal-tolerant sunflower mutant line for biomonitoring Cu phytoavailability, Cu-induced soil phytotoxicity, and Cu phytoextraction was assessed on a Cu-contaminated soil series (13–1020 mg Cu kg−1) obtained by fading a sandy topsoil from a wood preservation site with a similar uncontaminated soil. Morphological and functional plant responses as well as shoot, leaf, and root ionomes were measured after a 1-month pot experiment. Hypocotyl length, shoot and root dry weight (DW) yields, and leaf area gradually decreased as soil Cu exposure rose. Their dose-response curves (DRC) plotted against indicators of Cu exposure were generally well fitted by sigmoidal curves. The half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of morphological parameters ranged between 203 and 333 mg Cu kg−1 soil, corresponding to 290–430 μg Cu L−1 in the soil pore water, and 20 ± 5 mg Cu kg−1 DW in the shoots. The EC10 for shoot Cu concentration (13–15 mg Cu kg−1 DW) coincided to 166 mg Cu kg−1 soil. Total chlorophyll content and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were early biomarkers (EC10: 23 and 51 mg Cu kg−1 soil). Their DRC displayed a biphasic response. Photosynthetic pigment contents, e.g., carotenoids, correlated with TAC. Ionome was changed in Cu-stressed roots, shoots, and leaves. Shoot Cu removal peaked roughly at 280 μg Cu L−1 in the soil pore water.

This study focuses on the fate of phosphorus (P) in 2 pilot-scale CWtw after 2 years of operation considering the 3 components: water, soil and plants. P mass balance was estimated by measures of water balance (inflow outflow and infiltration), flow composite samples, grab samples, water in soil, deposits, soil and plants samples. When considering inlet/outlet an efficiency of 83% and 39 % P removal was observed respectively in M1 and M2. Since the plant uptake was of 15-25 % of total P removal in both systems, the remaining fraction was either retained in the soil or infiltrated. Removal of P by harvesting of aboveground biomass is relevant in that case because of a lightly load system and confirms the need for a harvesting per year to avoid the release of up to 7 kg of P.

An 8-month study was carried out in 2015. Each month, 200 individuals were sampled and examined for exoskeletal malformations. Temporal variations in malformationfrequency were noted,particularlyduringthebreedingperiod, along withdecreases in the sizeof non-deformedshrimps related to the appearance of juveniles in breeding sites, and high mortality among deformed shrimps. A significant increase in proportions of deformed shrimp was observed, relating particularly to the size (and therefore the age) of individuals. No significant difference was found between shrimp proportions with different numbers of malformations (one to four) for a fixed size class, nor was there any variation in proportions within different size classes for a fixed number of malformations. This would appear toindicate thatthe number ofmalformations isacquiredand new malformations donot seemto appearduringthe lifecycle,exceptforthesmallest(youngest)shrimps.Themalformationspectrumshowednosignificantdifferencesbetweenthe biggest and smallest individuals for the different malformation associations, except for those involving cephalothorax, rostrum and uropods. This would suggest that some malformation associations lead to a higher mortality rate in shrimps subjected to them, due to greater impairment of feeding and/or swimming behaviour. Multiple component analysis of the different types of malformation showed correlations between exoskeletal pieces (rostrum and cephalothorax) and appendixes (scaphocerites and uropods). Regarding metal contamination in shrimp, no significant difference was highlighted between deformed and nondeformed shrimps. Organic pollutants were not measured in tissues. Certain herbicides such as metolachlore and chlortoluron.
