Efficient dispersion of crude oil by blends of food-grade surfactants: Toward greener oil-spill treatments Texte intégral

Effectiveness of oil spill dispersants containing lecithin/Tween 80 (L/T) blends in ethanol was measured as a function of L:T ratio, surfactant:solvent ratio, solvent composition, and dispersant:oil ratio (DOR) using baffled flask dispersion effectiveness tests. Optimal L:T ratios are between 60:40 and 80:20 (w/w); at higher L:T ratios, effectiveness is limited by high interfacial tension, while at lower L:T ratios, insufficient lecithin is present to form a well-packed monolayer at an oil–water interface. These optimal L:T ratios retain high effectiveness at low DOR: 80:20 (w/w) L:T dispersant is 89% effective at 1:25 DOR (v/v) and 77% effective at 1:100 DOR (v/v). Increasing surfactant:solvent ratio increases dispersant effectiveness even when DOR is proportionally reduced to keep total surfactant concentration dosed into the oil constant. Replacing some of the ethanol with octane or octanol also increases dispersant effectiveness, suggesting that ethanol's hydrophilicity lowers dispersant–oil miscibility, and that more hydrophobic solvents would increase effectiveness.

The level of fecal pollution in 17 sites in Puerto Rico was determined by Escherichia coli (E. coli) enumeration using an enzyme substrate medium and Quanti-Tray®/2000. Human fecal pollution was identified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of carbamazepine (CBZ) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) detection of the human Bacteroides marker, HF183. Carbamazepine was detected in 16 out of 17 sites, including Condado Lagoon, a popular recreational area. Elevated E. coli levels (>410CFU100mL−1) were detected in 13 sites. Average CBZ concentrations ranged from 0.005μgL−1 to 0.482μgL−1 and 7 sites were positive for HF183. Higher CBZ concentrations were associated with the detection of HF183 (Mann–Whitney test; U=42.0; df=7; 1-tailed P value=0.013). This was the second study to determine surface water concentrations of CBZ in the Caribbean and the first in Puerto Rico.

Surface sediment samples from Bohai Bay and its adjacent river, China, were analyzed for aliphatic hydrocarbon, PAHs and biomarkers in order to determine the distribution, composition and source of organic matter in a coastal environment. Results suggested that the input of organic matter from anthropogenic activities has a more significant influence on its distribution than that from natural processes. Petroleum contamination, mainly from offshore oil exploration and discharge of pollutants from rivers, was the main source of n-alkanes. PAHs were mostly of pyrogenic origin; while some sites in Yellow River Estuary were derived mainly from the petrogenic sources. The toxic assessment suggested that the PAHs in surface sediments will not cause immediately adverse biological effects in sediments from Bohai Bay and its adjacent river, China.

Air quality management in urban areas requires the use of advanced modeling tools, able to predict and evaluate the pollution level under different traffic and meteorological conditions. In the present paper, the Artificial Compressibility version of the Characteristic Based Split algorithm (AC–CBS) was used to assess the performance of the Spalart–Allmaras based Detached Eddy Simulation (SA–DES) model, for the calculation of incompressible turbulent flow in different urban street canyon configurations. To our knowledge, the DES version of the SA turbulence model was applied in this work for the first time for the simulation of turbulent flow in a street canyon. The proposed DES model was able to accurately reproduce the turbulent characteristics of the flow compared with results from real street canyon experiments, wind tunnel experiments, and also to that obtained with RANS simulations. These results are very similar to the ones obtained from Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of street canyons flow reported in some recent publications, but with the potential characteristic of reduced computational costs. The DES approach is very promising for the simulation of transient turbulent flows in urban areas when complex three–dimensional domains are considered. The performance of the DES model evaluated for the mean dimensionless streamwise velocity profiles was comparable to that of Reynolds–Averaged Navier–Stokes RANS approach if referred to Hit Rate (HR) validation metric, and even better if referred to Factor of two observation (FAC2) validation metric. An accurate reproduction of the turbulent flow is crucial for urban pollutant dispersion simulations, since the distribution of the pollutant concentrations could differ by order of magnitude in the different points of the street canyon. DES approach results were able to accurately predict the unsteadiness characteristic of the flow, and to reproduce some minor vortex structures, which were not observed in the RANS cases, that will lead to a more accurate reproduction of the pollutant concentrations.

In this study the metal composition of PM1 and PM2.5 samples collected in the surroundings of a municipal incinerator located in a suburban–farming area, less than 10 km away from Northeast of Bologna (Italy) was investigated. Seven out of eight monitoring stations were installed in a domain of 8x9 km2 around the incinerator plant; the eighth station was placed inside the urban area of Bologna. The coordinates of four monitoring stations were selected on the basis of a preliminary study by using a dispersion model. Eleven metals (Al, Sb, As, Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cu, V, Zn) were quantified in both the filter acid–digests and in the water extracts. The PM2.5 collected in all the sites of the domain were highly correlated with exception of the urban site. The daily average metal concentrations in summer were 1.84% and 1.14% for PM2.5 and PM1 respectively, indicating that fine particles are less enriched in metals. Fe, Al and Zn were the most abundant elements, and they represented about the 80% of the total amount of the analyzed ones. The average water soluble metal compositions were 0.71% and 0.41% for PM2.5 and PM1 respectively. In the sites of the suburban–farming studied area the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis revealed differences between water soluble metal compositions in PM1 and PM2.5. The urban sites were characterized by lower total and soluble metals contents than the other PM2.5 stations installed around the incinerator plant. However, no noticeable difference in the concentrations of metals in the particulate matter between the sites chosen as maxima of incinerator emissions and the control sites was observed.

Trace elements in particulate matter associated with coal industries hold high risk to human health. Understanding the contents and occurrences of modes of these elements as well as their contribution to particulate toxicity is significant both environmentally and pathologically. A total of 24 PM10 samples were collected in Pingdingshan City, a coal industrial city in North China, in both winter and summer of 2008. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) was used to determine the concentrations of 12 trace elements associated with coal industries (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Tl, Pb, and Bi) in PM10 samples. The results indicated that the trace element concentrations were higher in winter than in summer; due mainly to more coal combustion during winter and to the different meteorological conditions of these two seasons. The soluble proportions of these trace elements compared with total values of intact whole samples were higher in winter than in summer, and this difference was attributed mainly to more SO2 reacting with pre–existing particles to form soluble particles in winter. Of all the analyzed elements, Ni, Tl, Sb, Mo, and Cd occurred mainly in the soluble state (>50% in the soluble fraction), Cr, Cu, Zn, and As occurred in both the soluble and insoluble state (20% to 50% in the soluble fraction), and Sn, Pb, and Bi occurred mainly in the insoluble state (<20% in the soluble fraction). A plasmid DNA assay indicated that winter samples had higher toxicity than summer samples. The correlation of PM10 toxicity (TD50 value) with the contribution of various trace elements to DNA damage (trace element concentration) was further analyzed, and the results indicated that PM10 toxicity was caused mainly by the soluble fractions of trace elements, including those of Ni, Pb, Cu, Cd, As, Zn, Cr, and Tl, which were the major toxic trace elements in Pingdingshan PM10.

The successful management of sustainable coastal environments that are beneficial to both humans and marine ecosystems requires knowledge about factors that are harmful to such environments. Here, we investigated seawater nutrient and carbon parameters between 2010 and 2012 in Kwangyang Bay, Korea, a coastal environment that has been exposed to intensive anthropogenic activities. The data were analyzed using cluster and factor analysis. We found that the biogeochemical cycles of nutrients and carbon were determined by river discharge into the bay and biological activity. However, the impacts of these factors varied both spatially and seasonally. During the past 10years, nutrient loads from the river and industrial complexes to the bay have decreased. The impacts of this decrease are visible in the phosphate concentration, which has fallen to a third of its initial value. We also examined the potential role of atmospheric nitrogen deposition in nitrogen cycling in the study area.

Present-day habitats of the Ebro Delta, NE Iberian Peninsula, have been ecologically altered as a consequence of intensive human impacts in the last two centuries (especially rice farming). Benthic foraminiferal palaeoassemblages and sediment characteristics of five short cores were used to reconstruct past wetland habitats, through application of multivariate DCA and CONISS techniques, and dissimilarity coefficients (SCD). The timing of environmental changes was compared to known natural and anthropogenic events in order to identify their possible relationships. In deltaic wetlands under altered hydrological conditions, we found a decrease in species diversity and calcareous-dominated assemblages, and a significant positive correlation between microfaunal changes and organic matter content. Modern analogues supported palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the recent evolution of the Delta wetlands. This research provides the first recent reconstruction of change in the Ebro Delta wetlands, and also illustrates the importance of benthic foraminifera for biomonitoring present and future conditions in Mediterranean deltas.

Sediments in lakes and coasts can release metals into water via static diffusion and especially resuspension. The resuspension under sediment liquefaction may severely affect the concentrations of metals in water. In this study, flume experiments were carried out twice to study the release of two metal combinations (Zn and Pb; Zn and Cu), respectively. Each experiment included three phases: consolidation; non-liquefaction and liquefaction. Results showed that total Zn concentration at liquefaction phase increased by a maximum rate of 26 compared with the consolidation phase. The concentration of particulate Zn at liquefaction phase increased by a maximum rate of 8.30 compared with the non-liquefaction phase. The average concentration of dissolved Zn at the liquefaction phase increased up to 0.24 times from the consolidation phase. Total Zn concentration at the non-liquefaction phase increased by several times compared with the consolidation phase. Metals were homogeneously distributed in the liquefaction layer through wave actions.

The extent of microplastic pollution (<5mm) in the southern hemisphere, particularly southern Africa, is largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate microplastic pollution along the south-eastern coastline of South Africa, looking at whether bays are characterised by higher microplastic densities than open stretches of coastline in both beach sediment and surf-zone water. Microplastic (mean±standard error) densities in the beach sediment ranged between 688.9±348.2 and 3308±1449particles·m−2, while those in the water column varied between 257.9±53.36 and 1215±276.7particles·m−3. With few exceptions there were no significant spatial patterns in either the sediment or water column microplastic densities; with little differences in density between bays and the open coast (P>0.05). These data indicate that the presence of microplastics were not associated with proximity to land-based sources or population density, but rather is governed by water circulation.
