Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) inevitably enter domestic sewage and industrial wastewater with the continuous increase of their production and application field. The potential effect of CNTs on biological wastewater treatment processes has raised wide concerns due to their biotoxicity. In the present study, the performance, microbial community and enzymatic activity of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were evaluated under 148-day exposure of amino-functionalized multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs-NH₂) at 10 and 30 mg/L. The COD removal efficiency at 10 and 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH₂ gradually reduced from 91.03% and 90.43% on day to 89.11% and 86.70% on day 148, respectively. The NH₄⁺-N removal efficiency at 10 and 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH₂ gradually reduced from 98.98% and 98.46% on day 1 to 96.65% and 63.39% on day 148, respectively. Compared to 0 mg/L MWCNTs-NH₂, the oxygen-utilizing rate, ammonia-oxidizing rate, nitrite-oxidizing rate, nitrite-reducing rate and nitrate-reducing rate at 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH₂ were decreased by 52.35%, 60.58%, 55.12%, 56.56% and 57.42% on day 148, respectively. The microbial reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase release on day 148 was increased by 59.71% and 55.28% at 30 mg/L MWCNTs-NH₂, respectively. The key microbial enzymatic activity related to nitrogen removal decreased with the increase of operation time under MWCNTs-NH₂ stress. The relative abundances of Nitrosomonas, Nitrosospira, Nitrospira and some denitrifying bacteria at 10 mg/L MWCNTs-NH₂ gradually reduced with an increment in operation time. The changes of nitrogen removal rate, microbial community and enzymatic activity of SBR were related to the time-cumulative nonlinear inhibition effect under long-term exposure.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a family of synthetic, fluorinated organic compounds. They have been widely used in industrial applications and consumer products and widespread in the environment, wildlife and human. Experimental and epidemiologic evidence suggested that PFASs are capable of interfering with endocrine processes and have potential reproductive and developmental toxicities. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), one of the main reasons of female infertility, is a common endocrine disorder in reproductive age women. We performed a case-control study to evaluate associations between PCOS-related infertility and PFASs concentrations in plasma. A total of 180 infertile PCOS-cases and 187 healthy controls were recruited from the Center for Reproductive Medicine of Shandong University. Blood specimens were collected at enrollment and analyzed for ten PFASs using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Multivariable logistic regression procedure was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each PFAS. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were the dominant PFASs in the plasma of participants, with the median concentration of 5.07 ng/mL and 4.05 ng/mL, respectively. The median levels of individual PFAS were not significantly different between PCOS-cases and controls. While adjusted for the potential confounders (age, BMI, household income, education level, employment status, age at menarche, menstrual volume), the plasma concentration of perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA), a 12 carbons lengths of perfluorocarboxylic acids, was associated with a significantly increased risk of PCOS-related infertility (medium vs low tertile: OR = 2.36, 95% CI: 1.12, 4.99, P = 0.02; high vs low tertile: OR = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.19, 7.67, P = 0.02), with the P trend 0.01. No significant relationship was observed between PCOS-related infertility and other PFAS analytes in the adjusted model, despite perfluoroundecanoic acid showed a negative association (P trend 0.03). The potential reproductive health effects of PFASs and the underlying mechanisms merit further investigation in the future.

The wide adoption of combined heat and power (CHP) can not only improve energy efficiency, but also strengthens energy system resiliency. While CHP reduces overall emissions compared to generating the same amount of electricity and heat separately, its on-site nature also means that CHP facilities operate in populated areas, raising concerns over their near-source air quality impact. Evaluation of the near-source impact of distributed CHP is limited by emission data availability, especially in terms of particulate matter (PM). In this paper, we report on stack emission testing results of a community-scale CHP plant with two natural gas turbine units (15 MW each) from measurements conducted in both 2010 and 2015, and assess the near-source air quality impact using an integrated modeling framework using the stack test results, site-specific meteorological data and terrain profiles with buildings. The NOx removal efficiency by selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is estimated to be ∼83% according to the emission testing. The integrated framework employs AERMOD to screen air quality in a 2.7 km × 2.3 km domain from 2011 to 2015 to identify the highest ground-level concentrations (GLCs). Examining the corresponding meteorological conditions, we find that those high GLCs appeared during the stable atmospheric boundary layer with relative high wind speed. Next, the worse-case scenarios identified from the screening process are simulated using the detailed Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) model coupled with a chemistry solver. The results generally show low GLCs of primary PM₂.₅ for this case study. However, our analysis also suggests greater building downwash impacts with the presence of taller and denser urban structures. Therefore, the near-source impact of natural gas-fired CHP in large metropolitan areas is worthy of further investigation.

The concentrations of heavy metals and other components in road dust from a Polish coal mining district were investigated. The sample was split into eight size fractions ranging from <5 μm to 1–2 mm applying the combined classification procedure of dry sieving and air classification. For most elements, significantly higher concentrations were found in the finest size fractions. In combination with the mass fractions of the various size fractions the concentrations of the components were calculated for this road dust assuming different upper size limits. The results demonstrate the important influence of the upper size limit applied on the composition of road dust. An analysis of the composition of road dust by particle size, instead of analysing whole road dust samples, proves to have several advantages. On the one hand, a reliable comparison of the results with the concentration data available in the literature is possible and on the other hand, the results can be used in assessments, for example resuspension or wash-off by rainfall, which require different upper size limits.Upper size limit applied in road dust sampling significantly influences the results. Combined sieving and air classification sample preparation procedure allows flexible use of the results.

The present study introduces a mechanically robust, sealable SPME sampler for the on-site sampling and extraction of a wide range of untargeted pollutants in environmental waters. Spray-coating and dip coating methodologies were used to coat the surfaces of six stainless steel bolts with a layer of HLB/PAN particles, which served as the extractive substrate in the proposed device. In addition, this sampler was designed to withstand rough handling, long storage times, and various environmental conditions. In order to identify whether the sampler was able to stabilize extracted compounds for long periods of time, the effects of storage time and temperature were evaluated. The results of these tests showed no significant differences in the quantity and quality of the extracted chemicals following 12 days storage at room temperature, thus confirming the device's suitability for use at sampling sites that are far away from the laboratory facilities. The proposed device was also used to perform extraction and untargeted analyses of river waters in five different geographical locations. The constituent chemicals in the samplers were analyzed and determined using high-resolution HPLC-Orbitrap MS. Toxin and Toxin-Target Database was used as a reference database for toxins and environmental contaminants. Ultimately, over 80 tentative chemicals with widely varying hydrophobicities ranging within −2.43 < logP <11.9—including drugs, metabolites, wide ranges of toxins, pesticide, and insecticides—were identified in the samplers used in the different rivers. The log P values for the tentative analytes confirmed that the introduced device is suitable for the extraction and trace analysis of wide ranges of targeted and untargeted pollutants.

Tetraconazole, a chiral triazole fungicide, is widely used for the prevention of plant disease in wheat fields. However, the chirality of pesticides like tetraconazole can cause diverse biological responses. Therefore, it is important that research is conducted to investigate the enantioselective effects of chiral enantiomers in this regard. The absolute configurations of two tetraconazole enantiomers were initially confirmed by ECD (Electrostatic circular dichroism). The bioassay test showed that the fungicidal activity of (R)-(+)-tetraconazole against two pathogens (R. cerealis and F. graminearum) was approximately 1.49–1.98 times greater than that for (S)-(−)- tetraconazole. Following recovery experiments, a modified QuEchERS (Quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, safe) method was established using UPLC-MS/MS (ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry). The mean recoveries from plant and soil sample ranged from 78.9% to 100.5% with intraday relative standard (RSDᵣ) values of 0.8%–6.9% and interday relative standard (RSDR) values of 3.0%–5.2% respectively. The stereoselective degradation of tetraconazole in wheat meant that (S)-(−)-tetraconazole was more rapidly degraded than (R)-(+)-tetraconazole. Conversely, (R)-(+)-tetraconazole was preferentially degraded in wheat soil. These results will provide us with a greater understanding when assessing future environmental risk assessments and strategies that invoke pesticide reduction.

Recently, novel-nanomaterials with excellent sorption capacities, mild stability, and environmental-friendly performance, have enabled massive developments in capturing heavy metal ions. This review firstly introduces the preparation and modification of novel-nanomaterials (e.g., MOFs, nZVI, MXenes, and g-C₃N₄). Then, the heavy metal ions’ sorption properties and the impact of environmental conditions have been discussed. Subsequently, the sorption mechanisms are verified through batch experiments, spectral analysis, surface complexation models, and theoretical calculations. Finally, the applications prospects of novel-nanomaterials in removing heavy metal ion polluted water have also been discussed, which provide perspective for future in-depth research and practical applications.

Boscalid as one of the most widely used succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides has been frequently detected in both freshwater and estuarine environments. Its acute toxic effects on zebrafish and freshwater algae have been reported in our previous studies. To further investigate its chronic toxic effects to aquatic organisms, adult zebrafish were exposed for 28 days to a series of environmentally relevant boscalid concentrations in this study. Growth indicators and histopathology were determined in this study. Results indicated that boscalid inhibited the growth of zebrafish and induced damage in the kidneys and liver. Carbohydrate and lipid metabolism as the key pathways of energy metabolism in growth of zebrafish were also investigated. Results showed boscalid caused an increase in the activity of hexokinase (HK), the content of glycogen, glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), and insulin (INS) in liver and a decrease in blood glucose content and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity. Boscalid reduced the total content of triacylglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (TC) and the activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) in the liver. Correspondingly, expression of the genes related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in liver and intestine was affected by boscalid, especially in the significant upregulation of G6Pase and pparα and downregulation of SGLT-1 and AMY. Results suggested that boscalid could affect carbohydrate metabolism of adult zebrafish via regulation of gluconeogenesis and glycolysis at 0.1 mg/L. Moreover, boscalid might induce an increase in β-oxidation and a decrease in lipid synthesis at 0.01 mg/L. In conclusion, our study identified that carbohydrate and lipid metabolism are the possible biological pathways that mediate boscalid-induced developmental effects.

In our study, Bufo gargarizans (B. gargarizans) larvae were exposed to control, 0.5, 5, 10 and 50 mg/L of NaF from Gs 26 to 42. At Gs 42, we evaluated the changes of liver histology and the mRNA levels of target genes in liver. In addition, we also examined the composition and content of fatty acids. Histological analysis revealed that fluoride caused liver injury, such as the increase of number of melanomacrophage centres, atrophy of nucleus, dilation of bile canaliculus, and decrease of quantity, degradation and deposition of lipid droplets. The results of RT-qPCR indicated that exposure to 5, 10 and 50 mg/L of NaF significantly decreased the transcript levels of genes related to fatty acid synthesis (FASN, FAE, MECR, KAR and TECR) in liver. Besides, mRNA expression of genes involved in fatty acid β-oxidation (ECHS1, HADHA, SCP2, CPT2, ACAA1 and ACAA2) and oxidative stress (SOD, GPx, MICU1 and HSP90) was significantly downregulated in 0.5, 5, 10 and 50 mg/L of NaF treatment groups. Also, in the relative expression of genes associated with synthesis and secretion of bile acid, BSEP significantly increased at 0.5, 5 and 50 mg/L of NaF while HSD3B7 significantly reduced in 0.5, 5, 10 and 50 mg/L of NaF. Finally, the fatty acid extraction and GC-MS analysis showed that the content of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) was decreased and the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was increased in all fluoride treatment groups. Taken together, the present results indicated that fluoride-induced the histological alterations of liver might be linked to the disorder of lipid metabolism, oxidative damage.

The co-occurrence of aquatic contaminants, such as antibiotics and herbicides, has motivated investigations into their interactive effects on aquatic organisms. We examined the combined effects of environmental concentrations of the antibiotic Enrofloxacin (Enro; 0–2.25 μg l−1) and Roundup OriginalDI (Roundup®; 0–0.75 μg active ingredient l−1), a glyphosate based-herbicide, on Elodea canadensis. Enro alone was not toxic, but the plants were highly sensitive to Roundup® whose toxicity is related to the induction of oxidative stress. The metabolism of Enro by plants into Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) was observed, and although former is not phytotoxic, oxidative events associated with Cipro generation were observed. The activity of cytochrome P450 was shown to be involved in Enro degradation in E. canadensis. As a cytochrome P450 inhibitor, Roundup® decreases Enro metabolism in plants. Enro, in turn, increases glyphosate uptake and toxicity, so that Enro and Roundup® have synergistic effects, disrupting the physiological processes of E. canadensis. Our results suggest E. canadensis as a potential candidate for the reclamation of Enro in contaminated waters, but not for Roundup® due to its high sensitivity to that herbicide.
