Vehicle emissions are an important source of particulate matter (PM) in urban areas and have well-known adverse health effects on human health. Oxidative potential (OP) is used as a quantification metric for indexing PM toxicity. In this study, by using a liquid spot sampler (LSS) and the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay, the diurnal OP variation was assessed at a ground-level urban monitoring station. Besides, since the monitoring station was adjacent to the main road, the correlation between OP and traffic volume was also evaluated. PM components, including metals, water-soluble inorganic aerosols (WSIAs), black carbon (BC), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), were also simultaneously monitored. The daytime and evening mean ± std volume-normalized OP (OPv) were 0.46 ± 0.27 and 0.48 ± 0.26 nmol/min/m³, and exhibited good correlations with PM₁.₀ and BC; however, these concentrations were only weakly correlated with mass-normalized OP (OPm). The mean ± std OPm was higher in the daytime (41.3 ± 13.8 pmol/min/μg) than in the evening (36.1 ± 11.5 pmol/min/μg). According to the PMF analysis, traffic emissions dominated the diurnal OP contribution. Organic matter and individual metals associated with non-exhaust traffic emissions, such as Mn, Fe, and Cu, contributed substantially to OP. Diurnal variations of PAH concentrations suggest that photochemical reactions could enhance OP, highlighting the importance of atmospheric aging on PM toxicity.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in PM₂.₅ were first observed at a background site (Yuzhong site: YZ site) in the northwestern highlands of China in five seasonal campaigns. Compared with major northwestern cities, PAHs and NPAHs at the YZ site were at a lower level but showed consistent seasonal differences. The PAH and NPAH concentrations peaked in the winter campaigns, which were 36.11 ± 6.54 ng/m³ and 418.11 ± 123.55 pg/m³, respectively, in winter campaign 1 and 28.97 ± 10.07 ng/m³ and 226.89 ± 133.54 pg/m³, respectively, in winter campaign 2. These values were approximately a dozen times larger those in other campaigns. The diagnostic ratios indicate that vehicle emissions were the primary source of the PAHs throughout the five campaigns, and coal and biomass combustion also contributed during the winter, summer, and fall campaigns. Among NPAHs, 2-nitrofluoranthene and 2-nitropyrene were generated through OH radical-initiated reactions during atmospheric transport, while 1-nitropyrene came from combustion sources. There is an observation worth pondering, which is that the ratio between pyrene and fluoranthene increased abnormally in the spring and fall campaigns, which is presumably caused by the burning of Tibetan barley straw in the northwestern highlands. The backward trajectories over Tibetan areas in Qinghai and southwestern Gansu are consistent with this hypothesis. In addition, this study reported for the first time that the burning of Tibetan barley straw has become a seasonal contributor to air pollution in northwestern China and is participating in the atmospheric transport of air pollutants driven by the monsoon in East Asia, which urgently requires further research.

HKUST-1 is currently studied for a very diverse range of applications. Despite its exciting potential, significant concerns remain regarding the safety of HKUST-1. Therefore, human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells were used to verify the renal toxicity of HKUST-1. In this study, HKUST-1 induced concentration-dependent cytotoxic effects in HEK293 cells. The depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential and formation of apoptotic bodies and autophagic vesicles were observed in HKUST-1–treated HEK293 cells. Oxidative (oxidative stress and haem oxygenase-1 activation) and inflammatory responses (NF-κB and NLRP3 activation) in HEK293 cells were induced by HKUST-1 exposure. In addition, the observed reduction in NAD(P)H levels in HKUST-1–treated HEK293 cells may be attributable to PARP-1 activation following DNA single- and double-strand breaks. The HKUST-1–induced depletion of zonula occludens proteins in HEK293 cells might lead to altered renal barrier integrity. The variations of α1-antitrypsin, oxidised α1-antitrypsin and NLRP3 protein expression in HEK293 cells suggested that HKUST-1 increases the risk of chronic kidney diseases. However, most of these adverse effects were significantly induced only by high HKUST-1 concentration (100 μg/mL), which do not reflect the actual exposure. Thus, the toxic risk of HKUST-1 appears to be negligible.

Chai, Minwei | Li, Ruili | Gong, Yuan | Shen, Xiaoxue | Yu, Lingyun
A systematic investigation into bioaccessible heavy metals in shellfish Crassostrea ariakensis, Chlamys farreri, and Sinonovacula constricta from coastal cities Shenzhen, Zhoushan, Qingdao, and Dandong was carried out to assess the potential health risk to residents in coastal regions in China. The bioaccessible fractions of heavy metals were (μg‧g⁻¹): Zn (0.63–15.01), Cu (0.10–12.91), Cd (0.01–0.64), As (0.11–0.33), Cr (0.07–0.12), Pb (0.01–0.03). The bioaccessibilities of heavy metals were Cr 61.86%, inorganic As (iAs) 60.44%, Pb 55.74%, Cu 46.83%, Zn 28.16%, and Cd 24.99%. As for child and adult, the bioaccessibility-corrected estimated daily intakes were acceptable and the non-carcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals were not obvious. The carcinogenic risks posed by bioaccessible heavy metals at the fifth percentile were 10-fold higher than the acceptable level (10⁻⁴), with iAs and Cd to be the major contributors, regardless of child or adult. The probabilistic estimation showed the low risk of shellfish consumption, which was verified by higher values of maximum allowable consumption rate and monthly meals at the 95 percentile; while some control of consumption rate and monthly meals was necessary for reducing heavy metal exposure of most shellfish samples, except for the safe consumption of S. constricta for both child and adult in Qingdao and Shenzhen, China.

2021
Li, Haixiao | Lu, Xueqiang | Wang, Shiyu | Zheng, Boyang | Xu, Yan
Microplastics are highly accumulated in soils and supposed to migrate vertically due to water infiltration, fauna activities, and root growth. In this study, the vertical migration of microplastics along soil profile under three crop roots (corn, soybean, and ryegrass) was analyzed by a laboratory-scale incubation experiment. When microplastics were initially distributed in the surface layer, crop roots showed little effects on the vertical migration of microplastics. But in terms of homogenous microplastic distribution along soil profile, corn roots could contribute to the upward movement of microplastics in the middle layers (7–12 cm). It could be related to more pores and fissures created by primary and secondary corn roots and buoyancy effects once the pores and fissures were filled with water. Additionally, a significant positive correlation between microplastic numbers and tertiary roots of ryegrass has been observed and indicated the microplastic retention ability of fine crop roots. According to the results, in contrast to the downward microplastic migration caused by water infiltration and soil fauna activities, crop roots tended to move microplastics upwards or maintain them in soil layers.

This study investigated the biogeography, the presence and diversity of potentially harmful taxa harbored, and potential interactions between and within bacterial and eukaryotic domains of life on plastic debris in the Mediterranean. Using a combination of high-throughput DNA sequencing (HTS), Causal Network Analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), we show regional differences and gradients in the Mediterranean microbial communities associated with marine litter, positive causal effects between microbes including between and within domains of life, and how these might impact the marine ecosystems surrounding them. Adjacent seas within the Mediterranean region showed a gradient in the microbial communities on plastic with non-overlapping endpoints (Adriatic and Ligurian Seas). The largest predicted inter-domain effects included positive effects of a novel red-algal Plastisphere member on its potential microbiome community. Freshwater and marine samples housed a diversity of fungi including some related to disease-causing microbes. Algal species related to those responsible for Harmful Blooms (HABs) were also observed on plastic pieces including members of genera not previously reported on Plastic Marine Debris (PMD).

The Central Plains Economic Region (CPER) located along the transport path to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area has experienced severe PM₂.₅ pollution in recent years. However, few modeling studies have been performed on the sources of PM₂.₅, especially the impacts of emission reduction strategies. In this study, the Nested Air Quality Prediction Model System (NAQPMS) with an online tracer-tagging module was adopted to investigate source sectors of PM₂.₅ and a series of sensitivity tests were conducted to investigate the impacts of different sector-based mitigation strategies on PM₂.₅ pollution. The response surfaces of pollutants to sector-based emission changes were built. The results showed that resident-related sector (resident and agriculture), fugitive dust, traffic and industry emissions were the main sources of PM₂.₅ in Zhengzhou, contributing 49%, 19%, 15% and 13%, respectively. Response surfaces of pollutants to sector-based emission changes in Henan revealed that the combined reduction of resident-related sector and industry emissions efficiently decreased PM₂.₅ in Zhengzhou. However, reduced emissions in only the Henan region barely satisfied the national air quality standard of 75 μg/m³, whereas a 50%–60% reduction in resident-related sector and industry emissions over the whole region could reach this goal. On severely polluted days, even a 60% reduction in these two sectors over the whole region was insufficient to satisfy the standard of 75 μg/m³. Moreover, a reduction in traffic emissions resulted in an increase in the O₃ concentration. The results of the response surface method showed that PM₂.₅ in Zhengzhou decreased by 19% in response to the COVID-19 lockdown, which approached the observed reduction of 21%, indicating that the response surface method could be employed to study the impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown on air pollution. This study provides a scientific reference for the formulation of pollution mitigation strategies in the CPER.

Nitrocompounds are the major prime water contaminants. In this investigative study, toxic nitrocompounds (4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol) were removed by using magnetic CuFe₂O₄, CoFe₂O₄, and NiFe₂O₄ material systems. The metal ferrites were synthesized through hydrothermal method and also followed with calcination process. The properties of metal ferrites were confirmed through using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies and results there on were presented. For the first time, the synthesized CuFe₂O₄, CoFe₂O₄, and NiFe₂O₄ material systems were used for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (NP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in aqueous medium. The UV–visible spectrometry was employed to monitor the removal of nitro compounds and formation of aminophenol. Among, the three catalysts, the CuFe₂O₄ displayed excellent removal activity for nitrocompounds. The CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles completely removed the NP, DNP and TNP within 2, 5, 10 min, respectively. The NP reduction reaction follows the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Further, the investigated and proposed CuFe₂O₄, catalyst has given and demonstrated excellent kinetic rate constants 0.990, 0.317, 0.184 min⁻¹ for 4-NP, DNP and TNP respectively, which was very fast kinetic than the already published reports. Also, the aminophenol formation was confirmed for the above mentioned and select nitrocompounds. The obtained results confirm suggest that CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles based material system could be one of the promising catalysts for nitro compounds removal process.

The on-going and extensive use of neonicotinoids occur in orchards. However, it is still unknown whether and how orchard management affects soil properties, especially the contents and structure of soil organic matter during orchard development, and their further influences on neonicotinoid persistence. Here, surface soil samples were collected from the citrus orchards with different cultivation ages (1, 10, 14, and 20 years), and their physicochemical properties were determined. Changes in the chemical structure of soil organic matter (SOM) were furtherly examined using solid-state CP/TOSS ¹³C NMR. Then, the sorption isotherms of imidacloprid in these soils were investigated. The sorption coefficient (Kd) of imidacloprid at Cₑ of 0.05 mg/L in the orchard soils increased by 19.4–23.3%, along a 20-year chronosequence of cultivation, which should be mainly ascribed to the increase of SOM. However, the organic carbon-normalized sorption coefficient (Kₒc, sorption per unit mass of OM) of imidacloprid declined with increasing cultivation ages. Moreover, the polar and aliphatic domains of SOM had a significantly positive relation to the Kₒc of imidacloprid, suggesting its key role in governing imidacloprid sorption. The results highlighted that reasonable management measures could be adopted to control the occurrence and fate of neonicotinoids in soils, mainly by affecting the content and quality of SOM.

In this study, water and sediment samples from the Jiaozhou Bay and surrounding rivers were collected to analyze the seasonal occurrence and allocation of 12 organophosphate esters (OPEs) and the associated ecological risk. The higher contamination of OPEs in the adjacent rivers indicated the impact of terrestrial input. Tris(1-chloropropan-2-yl) phosphate (TCIPP) was the predominant OPE in the four environmental sample groups investigated. The spatial distribution of OPEs in seawater varied greatly seasonally and was mainly affected by terrestrial input, with OPEs being redistributed under the influence of tidal currents. The partition coefficients (log Kₒc) of the OPEs were calculated, and their strong correlation with the log Kₒw (octanol-water) values suggested that the water-sediment allocation was significantly affected by hydrophobicity. The homologous relationships among the 7 OPEs with detection frequencies greater than 40% were identified by principal component analysis (PCA). The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model explicated that ∑OPEs cycling dynamics and principal controlling factors were dissimilar in the bay versus surrounding rivers. The risk quotient (RQ) faced by typical organisms in seawater and river water indicated that short-term OPEs exposure was safe for green algae, daphnia and fish. The organisms in rivers faced the higher ecological risk of OPEs in spring than in summer and winter. Therefore, the terrestrial transport of OPEs in spring should be controlled.
