Influence of a burrowing, metal-tolerant polychaete on benthic metabolism, denitrification and nitrogen regeneration in contaminated estuarine sediments Texte intégral

We investigated the effects of the burrowing cirratulid polychaete Cirriformia filigera (Delle Chiaje, 1828) on benthic respiration and nitrogen regeneration in metal-contaminated estuarine sediments using laboratory mesocosms. C. filigera is a dominant component of assemblages in the most severely contaminated sediments within the Derwent estuary, southern Australia. In the presence of C. filigera sediment O2 consumption doubled, with approximately 55% of this increase due to their respiration and the remaining 45% attributable to oxidation reactions and increased microbial respiration associated with burrow walls. Combined NO3 and NO2 fluxes were unaffected. The addition of labile organic matter did not affect benthic fluxes, in the presence or absence of C. filigera, presumably due to the short timeframe of the experiment and naturally enriched test sediments. The results suggest that a combination of tolerance and burrowing activity enables this species to provide an ecosystem service in the removal of N from contaminated sites.

This paper demonstrates an approach to reducing acute toxicity in marine sediments using adsorbent parcels. Acute toxicity tests were carried using the marine amphipod Corophium volutator. Marine sediments were spiked with two know contaminants tributyltin and naphthalene and then treated with adsorbent parcels containing either amberlite XAD4 or activated carbon. Results showed that both types of adsorbent parcels were effective in reducing acute toxicity, not only within spiked sediments containing naphthalene and/or tributyltin, but also in an environmental field samples form an expected contaminated site. Adsorbent parcels such as these could provide a practical approach to remediate areas of contaminated sediment within marine environments. Furthermore adsorbents can be used as an identification tool for problematic contaminants using a toxicity identification evaluation approach.

The Northern San Jorge Gulf (NSJG) was designated Interjurisdictional Coastal Marine Park “Patagonia Austral” in 2008 with the objective of conserving biodiversity and natural resources. Metals released to the environment can be accumulated by organisms and can be toxic in some cases, making it necessary to evaluate their presence and biological risk. This study examined concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb in intertidal sediments of the NSJG, and was the first study of its kind to be conducted in this area. Concentrations of all metals fell below biological risk levels. Anthropogenic enrichment was only found for Ni around the Aristizábal lighthouse and was attributed to the frequent oil spills that impact this particular area.

We analyzed polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyl dichloroethane and its metabolites, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and hopanes, in plastic resin pellets collected from nine locations along the Portuguese coast. Concentrations of a sum of 13 PCBs were one order of magnitude higher in two major cities (Porto: 307ng/g-pellet; Lisboa: 273ng/g-pellet) than in the seven rural sites. Lower chlorinated congeners were more abundant in the rural sites than in the cities, suggesting atmospheric dispersion. At most of the locations, PAH concentrations (sum of 33 PAH species) were ∼100 to ∼300ng/g-pellet; however, three orders of magnitude higher concentrations of PAHs, with a petrogenic signature, were detected at a small city (Sines). Hopanes were detected in the pellets at all locations. This study demonstrated that multiple sample locations, including locations in both urban and remote areas, are necessary for country-scale pellet watch.

The herbicide irgarol 1051 is commonly used on ship hulls to prevent growth of algae, but as a component of self-eroding paints it can also spread in the surrounding waters and affect non-target organisms. The effect of irgarol on settlement and growth of zoospores from the marine macro algae Ulva lactuca from the Gullmar fjord on the Swedish west coast was investigated in the present study. The zoospores were allowed to settle and grow in the presence of irgarol, but neither settlement – nor growth inhibition was observed at concentrations of up to 2000nmoll−1. This is between 10 and 100 times higher than effect concentrations reported earlier for algae. Irgarol also induced the greening effect (4-fold increase in chlorophyll a content) in the settled zoospore/germling population, typical for photosystem II inhibitors like irgarol. This study support previous findings that irgarol constitutes a selection pressure in the marine environment.

From an environmental perspective, there is a need to reduce the amount of biocides from antifouling paints in the marine ecosystem as these biocides can exert a negative effect on the marine life. One way to do this is to optimize the use of biocides in antifouling paints, and thereby avoid unnecessary overdosing. This thesis has been produced within the research program Marine Paint which has the overall aim to produce an antifouling paint with a lower environmental impact than the paints existing on the market today. The aim of the studies presented in this thesis has been to evaluate the efficacy and ecotoxicity of eight antifouling biocides to both target and non-target organisms. The biocides investigated were: medetomidine, triphenylborane pyridine (TPBP), tolylfluanid, copper, irgarol, zinc pyrithione, copper pyrithione and 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl 3(2H)-isothiazolone (DCOIT). The target organisms investigated were the macroalga Ulva lactuca and periphyton (i.e. microbial communities). It is important to keep in mind that all target organisms that antifouling biocides are meant to affect, are also non-target organisms when they grow on natural substrates in the marine ecosystem. Therefore, effects on target organisms are not only of interest for efficacy evaluations, but also for ecotoxicological assessments of the biocides. Both the efficacy and ecotoxicity of the eight biocides has been evaluated for the target organisms in settlement assays in which the organisms were allowed to settle and grow in the presence of the biocides. Full concentration-response curves from 0 to 100 % effect were produced to enable future mixture predictions. Such mixture predictions can be used for paint optimization, but also in environmental applications such as hazard assessments. Copper pyrithione was the biocide that most efficiently prevented growth of both Ulva lactuca and periphyton communities, and for Ulva lactuca is was also the biocide with the highest ecotoxicity. Due to different shapes of the concentration-response curves, the toxicity ranking was not consistent at all effect levels (from EC10 to EC98), and irgarol was found to be more toxic to periphyton at lower concentrations than copper pyrithione. In order to extend the ecotoxicological evaluations of the biocides beyond target organisms, effects on the non-target organism Acartia tonsa was investigated. Acartia tonsa is one of the most commonly occurring pelagic calanoid copepods in coastal waters world-wide. Effects on mortality and egg production were studied for three of the eight biocides, namely DCOIT, TPBP and medetomidine. It was shown that neither DCOIT nor medetomidine affected the egg production specifically, but inhibition of egg production occurred at the same concentration as mortality. TPBP was on the other hand shown to affect the egg production at concentrations lower than lethal concentrations. Antifouling biocides present in the marine environment can exert selection pressure on marine life and through the process of natural selection induce tolerance development. An extreme tolerance to the antifouling biocide irgarol in a population of Ulva lactuca from the mouth of the Gullmar fjord has been described. This indicates that the use of antifouling paints has made its imprint on the marine ecosystem. The results from this thesis have deepened the understanding of the biological effects of antifouling biocides. The well-defined concentration-response curves gives information on both efficacy and ecotoxicity, and the information can be used in a number of applications where either biocidal efficacy or ecotoxicity is of interest, such as hazard assessments and in the design of antifouling paints.

Antifouling biocides are found in the marine ecosystem were they can affect non-target organisms. In this study the effects of five antifouling biocides on the settlement and growth of Ulva lactuca zoospores were investigated. The biocides investigated were copper (Cu²⁺), 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-3(2H)-isothiazolone (DCOIT), triphenylborane pyridine (TPBP), tolylfluanid and medetomidine. Full concentration–response curves where determined for each compound. EC₅₀ values were determined for copper, DCOIT, TPBP and tolylfluanid, all of which inhibited settlement and growth in a concentration dependent manner with the following toxicity ranking; tolylfluanid (EC₅₀ 80 nmol L⁻¹) ~ DCOIT (EC₅₀ 83 nmol L⁻¹) > TPBP (EC₅₀ 400 nmol L⁻¹) > Cu²⁺ (EC₅₀ 2,000 nmol L⁻¹). Medetomidine inhibited settlement and growth only at the extreme concentration of 100,000 nmol L⁻¹ (93 % effect). The low toxicity is possibly a consequence of a lack of receptors that medetomidine can bind to in the U. lactuca zoospores.

The exposure to methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) aerosol was investigated by biomnitoring of 2,4’–methylene diphenyldianiline (MDA) in urines of exposed workers. Biological monitoring was done for its metabolite by the analysis of isocyanate–derived diamines released from protein adducts in urine or plasma by GC–MS. The urine samples, at the end of working shifts of polyurethane factory, were collected in polystyrene bottles containing 10 g citric acid, and stored at 4 °C until analysis. The mean concentration values of MDA in the five selected factories were in the range of 3.01 to 3.58 µmol/mol creatinine for all subjects and the highest mean value of MDI concentration was 99 µg/m³ from indoor air samples analysis. The results show a linear relationship between MDI and MDA concentrations with a value of R2=0.801 (P<0.05). This study demonstrates that not only urinary MDA is detectable following diisocyanates aerosol exposure but also it is likely to be a useful practical biomarker to monitor diisocyanates exposure in the workplaces or for the epidemiologic studies.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, particular matter (PM) is the air pollutant that is most harmful to public health and the environment when compared to other measured criteria pollutants. During recent years, the Government of Bangladesh has tried to control PM emissions coming from anthropogenic sources. About 30–50% of the PM10 mass in Dhaka (depending on location) is in fine particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.2 µm. These particles are mainly of anthropogenic origin and predominately from transport–related sources. However, the combination of meteorological conditions, long–range transport during the winter and local sources results in PM concentrations remaining much higher than the Bangladesh National Ambient Air Quality Standard (BNAAQS). It has been found that black carbon accounted for about 50% of the total fine PM mass before the adoption of control policies. As a result, the PM emission as well as BC has not increased in proportion to the increase in the number of combustion sources like motor vehicles, diesel power generator or brick kiln. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was applied to fine particle composition data from January 2007 to February 2009. It was found that motor vehicles contribute less BC with respect to brick kiln industry. This result demonstrates the effectiveness of the government’s policy interventions since previously vehicles represented the major contributors of BC. BC is also transported over long distances, mixing with other particles along the way as demonstrated by a potential source contribution function analysis. Transboundary transport of air pollution in the South Asian region has become an issue of increasing importance over the past several decades. The relative amounts of local and long–range transported pollutants are currently unknown.

Coral, fish, plankton, and detritus samples were collected from coral reefs in Virgin Islands National Park (VIIS) and Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument (VICR) to assess existing contamination levels. Passive water sampling using polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) and semi-permeable membrane devices found a few emerging pollutants of concern (DEET and galaxolide) and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Very little persistent organic chemical contamination was detected in the tissue or detritus samples. Detected contaminants were at concentrations below those reported to be harmful to aquatic organisms. Extracts from the POCIS were subjected to the yeast estrogen screen (YES) to assess potential estrogenicity of the contaminant mixture. Results of the YES (estrogen equivalency of 0.17–0.31ng/L 17-β-estradiol) indicated a low estrogenicity likelihood for contaminants extracted from water. Findings point to low levels of polar and non-polar organic contaminants in the bays sampled within VICR and VIIS.

The quantification of entanglements of megafauna with plastic debris at sea is difficult to assess for several reasons, such as detection and reporting biases. We used standardized vessel based counts to describe and quantify the occurrence of marine debris entanglements in northern gannets Morus bassanus at five of its main wintering areas. We observed 34 entangled birds in total, representing 0.93% of all gannets counted (n=3672 individuals). The incidence of entanglements largely varied geographically, being exceptionally high off Mauritania (20.2% of the birds in late spring). Most birds affected were immature (1.88% compared to 0.06% in adults), which in turn represented 52.4% of all the birds. Entanglements in the lower bill mandible were the most frequent, mainly with red-colored plastic objects. Further research is urgently needed to evaluate the impact of entanglements at the population level and its occurrence in other marine species, and to seek potential solutions.

Recent work suggesting that fisheries depletions have turned the corner is misplaced because analysis was based largely on fisheries from better-managed developed-world fisheries. Some indicators of status show improvements in the minority of fisheries subjected to formal assessment. Other indicators, such as trophic level and catch time series, have been controversial. Nevertheless, several deeper analyses of the status of the majority of world fisheries confirm the previous dismal picture: serious depletions are the norm world-wide, management quality is poor, catch per effort is still declining. The performance of stock assessment itself may stand challenged by random environmental shifts and by the need to accommodate ecosystem-level effects. The global picture for further fisheries species extinctions, the degradation of ecosystem food webs and seafood security is indeed alarming. Moreover, marine ecosystems and their embedded fisheries are challenged in parallel by climate change, acidification, metabolic disruptors and other pollutants. Attempts to remedy the situation need to be urgent, focused, innovative and global.
