In this study, the formation of nitrate aerosol from 16 to 24 December 2015 in the Guanzhong basin, China is simulated using the WRF-Chem model. The predicted near-surface O₃, NO₂, and fine particulate matters (PM₂.₅) in the basin and inorganic aerosols and nitrous acid (HONO) in Xi'an are generally in good agreement with the observations. Sensitivity studies show that the heterogeneous HONO sources play an appreciable role in the nitrate formation in the basin, contributing 9.2% of nitrate mass concentrations during heavy haze days. Nitrate formation is also affected by sulfate due to their competition for ammonia, particularly in urban areas. A 50% decrease in SO₂ emissions enhances the nitrate concentration by 6.2% during heavy haze days on average in the basin, and a 50% increase in SO₂ emission reduces the nitrate concentration by 9.7%. The roles of HONO and sulfate competition in nitrate formation are strongly modulated by ammonia. Agricultural emissions predominate the nitrate level in the basin (93.5%), but the non-agricultural sources cannot substantially influence nitrate formation (3.7%–14.6%). Reducing agricultural emission is an effective control strategy to mitigate nitrate pollution in the basin.

2018

A systematic field measurement was conducted at an island site (Wanshan Island, WSI) over the South China Sea (SCS) in autumn 2013. It was observed that mixing ratios of O₃ and its precursors (such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ = NO + NO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO)) showed significant differences on non-episode days and episode days. Additional knowledge was gained when a photochemical box model incorporating the Master Chemical Mechanism (PBM-MCM) was applied to further investigate the differences/similarities of O₃ photochemistry between non-episode and episode days, in terms of O₃-precursor relationship, atmospheric photochemical reactivity and O₃ production. The simulation results revealed that, from non-O₃ episode days to episode days, 1) O₃ production changed from both VOC and NOₓ-limited (transition regime) to VOC-limited; 2) OH radicals increased and photochemical reaction cycling processes accelerated; and 3) both O₃ production and destruction rates increased significantly, resulting in an elevated net O₃ production over the SCS. The findings indicate the complexity of O₃ pollution over the SCS.

2018

Private groundwater sources in the Republic of Ireland provide drinking water to an estimated 750,000 people or 16% of the national population. Consumers of untreated groundwater are at increased risk of infection from pathogenic microorganisms. However, given the volume of private wells in operation, remediation or even quantification of public risk is both costly and time consuming. In this study, a hierarchical logistic regression model was developed to ‘predict’ contamination with E. coli based on the results of groundwater quality analyses of private wells (n = 132) during the period of September 2011 to November 2012. Assessment of potential microbial contamination risk factors were categorised into three groups: Intrinsic (environmental factors), Specific (local features) and Infrastructural (groundwater source characteristics) which included a total of 15 variables. Overall, 51.4% of wells tested positive for E. coli during the study period with univariate analysis indicating that 11 of the 15 assessed risk factors, including local bedrock type, local subsoil type, septic tank reliance, 5 day antecedent precipitation and temperature, along with well type and depth, were all significantly associated with E. coli presence (p < 0.05). Hierarchical logistic regression was used to develop a private well susceptibility model with the final model containing 8 of the 11 associated variables. The model was shown to be highly efficient; correctly classifying the presence of E. coli in 94.2% of cases, and the absence of E. coli in 84.7% of cases. Model validation was performed using an external data set (n = 32) and it was shown that the model has promising accuracy with 90% of positive E. coli cases correctly predicted. The developed model represents a risk assessment and management tool that may be used to develop effective water-quality management strategies to minimize public health risks both in Ireland and abroad.

2018
Díaz-Garduño, B. | Perales, J.A. | Garrido-Pérez, C. | Martín-Díaz, M.L.
A mobile pilot plant was set up in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in southwest Spain to address potential adverse effects of effluents as a whole contaminant, which are discharging into marine environments. Ruditapes philippinarum specimens were exposed to different effluent concentrations (50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.15%) during seven days. After effluent exposure, lysosomal membrane stability alterations (LMS), changes in the energy status storage (total lipids content (TLP) and in the mitochondrial electron transport (MET), inhibition of inflammatory mechanisms (cyclooxygenase activity (COX)), and neurotoxic effects (acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were determined in exposed organisms. Furthermore, potential toxic reduction in the effluent was analysed by the application of an additional microalgae tertiary treatment called photobiotreatment (PhtBio). Results after PhtBio confirmed the toxic effect reduction in exposed organisms. Neuroendocrine effects, alterations in energy budget and in lipid storage revealed alterations in clam's health status causing stress conditions after effluent exposure.

2018
Kaeseberg, Thomas | Schubert, Sara | Oertel, Reinhard | Zhang, Jin | Berendonk, Thomas U. | Krebs, Peter
Antibiotic resistant bacteria are a threat to human life. Recently, sewers have been identified as potential reservoirs. The intermittent injection of sewage into adjacent surface waters is inevitable, due to capacity limitations of the urban drainage system. Information regarding the effect to natural freshwater biofilms (NFB) due to the intermittent contaminations are scarce. Therefore, a fundamental screening is necessary. In April, we placed NFB-attachment constructions in a brook upstream and downstream from urban drainage overflow constructions. In meanwhile two sampling campaigns were conducted. The sewage and the brook water were collected to gather information about antibiotic background exposure of ciprofloxacin (CIP), clarithromycin (CLA) and doxycycline (DOX). Six months later we experimentally determined the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of the NFB-communities after a 24 h lasting exposure with additionally dosed antibiotics. Concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 mg L⁻¹ were selected. CIP, CLA and DOX were individually dosed, and also in mixtures. The mean antibiotic background concentration in sewage was in a range of 575.5–1289.1 ng L⁻¹, which mainly exceeded the concentrations published in literature. The determined mean concentration in the brook was in a range of 4.6–539.0 ng L⁻¹. The first significant inhibition of the OUR with individually dosed antibiotics started mainly at a concentration of 1.0 mg L⁻¹. Antibiotics in a mixture with concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg L⁻¹ were as effective as single dosed antibiotics with a concentration of 10.0 mg L⁻¹. The increased antibiotic tolerance and resistance of NFB-communities downstream of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) structure was a consequence of a severe impact due to urban drainage overflows. Hence, NFB-communities downstream of CSO-constructions are hot spots of antibiotic tolerant and resistant subpopulations and access restrictions should be announced, if an infection risk is present.

Iodinated haloacetamides (I-HAcAms) are emerging disinfection by-products and have received great concern due to their extremely high health risk. Previous studies have demonstrated the cytotoxicity of I-HAcAms, but the biological mechanism remained unclear. In this study, cytotoxicity mechanisms of 4 I-HAcAms species were preliminarily examined using HepG-2 cells. The results showed that the cytotoxicity could be ranked as follows: diiodoacetamide (DIAcAm)> iodoacetamide (IAcAm)> bromoiodoacetamide (BIAcAm)> chloroiodoacetamide (CIAcAm). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis played an important role in the cytotoxicity for all I-HAcAms species. Moreover, the ROS and cytotoxicity could be completely reversed by the addition of an antioxidant (N-acetylcysteine (NAC)), but the apoptosis could not. Specifically, the apoptosis induced by DIAcAm and IAcAm was partially reversed by NAC, suggesting that in addition to ROS, other pathways were also possible; While For BIAcAm and CIAcAm, the apoptosis was not reversed by NAC at all, which is potentially due to ROS-independent pathways. The apoptosis mechanisms were further analyzed via Bax and Bcl-2 gene expression and the corresponding protein expression in HepG-2 cells, that mitochondrial pathway was important in the apoptosis of HepG-2 cells induced by all I-HAcAms species. Overall, the mitochondrial pathway provided a potential explanation for BIAcAm and CIAcAm-induced apoptosis, while both ROS and mitochondrial pathways explained DIAcAm and IAcAm-induced apoptosis.

2018
Ciffroy, P. | Benedetti, M.
The main objectives of this study were to evaluate global uncertainty in the prediction of Distribution coefficients (Kds) for several Trace Metals (TM) (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) through the probabilistic use of a geochemical speciation model, and to conduct sensitivity analysis in speciation modeling in order to identify the main sources of uncertainty in Kd prediction. As a case study, data from the Loire river (France) were considered. The geochemical speciation model takes into account complexation of TM with inorganic ligands, sorption of TM with hydrous ferric oxides, complexation of TM with dissolved and particulate organic matter (i.e. dissolved and particulate humic acids and fulvic acids) and sorption and/or co-precipitation of TM to carbonates. Probability Density Functions (PDFs) were derived for physico-chemical conditions of the Loire river from a comprehensive collection of monitoring data. PDFs for model parameters were derived from literature review. Once all the parameters were assigned PDFs that describe natural variability and/or knowledge uncertainty, a stepwise structured sensitivity analysis (SA) was performed, by starting from computationally ‘inexpensive’ Morris method to most costly variance-based EFAST method. The most sensitive parameters on Kd predictions were thus ranked and their contribution to Kd variance was quantified. Uncertainty analysis was finally performed, allowing quantifying Kd ranges that can be expected when considering all the sensitive parameters together.

2018
Arias-Andres, Maria | Klümper, Uli | Rojas-Jimenez, Keilor | Grossart, Hans-Peter
Pollution by microplastics in aquatic ecosystems is accumulating at an unprecedented scale, emerging as a new surface for biofilm formation and gene exchange. In this study, we determined the permissiveness of aquatic bacteria towards a model antibiotic resistance plasmid, comparing communities that form biofilms on microplastics vs. those that are free-living. We used an exogenous and red-fluorescent E. coli donor strain to introduce the green-fluorescent broad-host-range plasmid pKJK5 which encodes for trimethoprim resistance. We demonstrate an increased frequency of plasmid transfer in bacteria associated with microplastics compared to bacteria that are free-living or in natural aggregates. Moreover, comparison of communities grown on polycarbonate filters showed that increased gene exchange occurs in a broad range of phylogenetically-diverse bacteria. Our results indicate horizontal gene transfer in this habitat could distinctly affect the ecology of aquatic microbial communities on a global scale. The spread of antibiotic resistance through microplastics could also have profound consequences for the evolution of aquatic bacteria and poses a neglected hazard for human health.

The concentrations, distributions, and bioaccumulation of nine organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in both abiotic and biotic media, comprising river water, sediment, and crucian carp. The highest concentrations were observed in liver (6.22–18.1 ng/g ww), and the levels in muscle (4.23–7.75 ng/g ww) and gonad (3.08–7.70 ng/g ww) were similar. In whole blood, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP; 31.1–256 ng/mL) accounted for 90% of the total OPFR concentration. Distributions of OPFRs differed between biotic and abiotic media, as tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP), and TBOEP were dominant in abiotic media, whereas triethyl phosphate (TEP), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TNBP), TCEP, and TBOEP dominated in crucian carp. The TNBP had remarkable accumulation potential among nine OPFRs, which the TNBP concentrations in muscle increased with increased total length and body weight. The higher perfusion rate of TNBP to female eggs were observed rather than to male gonads as the concentrations were higher in males than in females, while the opposite results were observed in gonad. Moreover, the concentration of TNBP in female muscle began to decrease near maximum growth as a sexually dimorphic difference in crucian carp. This is the first study to simultaneously investigate the fate of OPFRs in biotic and abiotic media and to show sex differences.

2018
Philipps, Rebecca R. | Xu, Xiaoyu | Mills, Gary L. | Bringolf, Robert B.
We conducted an exposure experiment with Diffusive Gradients in Thin- Films (DGT), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), and yellow lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa) to estimate bioavailability and bioaccumulation of Cu. We hypothesized that Cu concentrations measured by DGT can be used to predict Cu accumulation in aquatic animals and alterations of water chemistry can affect DGT's predict ability. Three water chemistries (control soft water, hard water, and addition of natural organic matter (NOM)) and three Cu concentrations (0, 30, and 60 μg/L) were selected, so nine Cu-water chemistry combinations were used. NOM addition treatments resulted in decreased concentrations of DGT-measured Cu and free Cu ion predicted by Biotic Ligand Model (BLM). Both hard water and NOM addition treatments had reduced concentrations of Cu ion and Cu-dissolved organic matter complexes compared to other treatments. DGT-measured Cu concentrations were linearly correlated to fish accumulated Cu, but not to mussel accumulated Cu. Concentrations of bioavailable Cu predicted by BLM, the species complexed with biotic ligands of aquatic organisms and, was highly correlated to DGT-measured Cu. In general, DGT-measured Cu fit Cu accumulations in fish, and this passive sampling technique is acceptable at predicting Cu concentrations in fish in waters with low NOM concentrations.
