Understanding of cadmium (Cd) uptake mechanism and development of lower Cd crop genotypes are crucial for combating its phytotoxicity and meeting 70% increase in food demand by 2050. Bio-accumulation of Cd continuously challenges quality of life specifically in regions without adequate environmental planning. Here, we investigated the mechanisms operating in Cd tolerance of two rice genotypes (Heizhan-43 and Yinni-801). Damage to chlorophyll contents and PSII, histochemical staining and quantification of reactive oxygen species (ROS), cell viability and osmolyte accumulation were studied to decipher the interactions between Cd and zinc (Zn) by applying two Cd and two Zn levels (alone as well as combined). Cd²⁺ and Ca²⁺ fluxes were also measured by employing sole Cd₁₀₀ (100 μmol L⁻¹) and Zn₅₀ (50 μmol L⁻¹), and their combination with microelectrode ion flux estimation (MIFE) technique. Cd toxicity substantially reduced chlorophyll contents and maximal photochemical efficiency (Fᵥ/Fₘ) compared to control plants. Zn supplementation reverted the Cd-induced toxicity by augmenting osmoprotectants and interfering with ROS homeostasis under combined treatments, particularly in Yinni-801 genotype. Fluorescence microscopy indicated a unique pattern of live and dead root cells, depicting more damage with Cd₁₀, Cd₁₅ and Cd₁₅+Zn₅₀. Our results confer that Cd²⁺ impairs the uptake of Ca²⁺ whereas, Zn not only competes with Cd²⁺ but also Ca²⁺, thereby modifying ion homeostasis in rice plants. This study suggests that exogenous application of Zn is beneficial for rice plants in ameliorating Cd toxicity in a genotype and dose dependent manner by minimizing ROS generation and suppressing collective oxidative damage. The observations confer that Yinni-801 performed better than Heizhan-43 genotype mainly under combined Zn treatments with low-Cd, presenting Zn fortification as a solution to increase rice production.

Plant species occurrence in Europe is affected by changes in nitrogen deposition and climate. Insight into potential future effects of those changes can be derived by a model approach based on field-based empirical evidence on a continental scale. In this paper, we present a newly developed empirical model PROPS, predicting the occurrence probabilities of plant species in response to a combination of climatic factors, nitrogen deposition and soil properties. Parameters included were temperature, precipitation, nitrogen deposition, soil pH and soil C/N ratio. The PROPS model was fitted to plant species occurrence data of about 800,000 European relevés with estimated values for pH and soil C/N ratio and interpolated climate and modelled N deposition data obtained from the Ensemble meteo data set and EMEP model results, respectively. The model was validated on an independent data set. The test of ten species against field data gave an average Pearson’s r-value of 0.79.PROPS was applied to a grassland and a heathland site to evaluate the effect of scenarios for nitrogen deposition and climate change on the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI), being the average of the relative probabilities, compared to the maximum probability, of all target species in a habitat. Results for the period 1930–2050 showed that an initial increase and later decrease in nitrogen deposition led to a pronounced decrease in HSI, and with dropping nitrogen deposition to an increase of the HSI. The effect of climate change appeared to be limited, resulting in a slight increase in HSI.

Little information exists on interaction effects between air pollution and influenza vaccination on allergic respiratory diseases. We conducted a large population-based study to evaluate the interaction effects between influenza vaccination and long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on allergic respiratory diseases in children and adolescents.A cross-sectional study was investigated during 2012–2013 in 94 schools from Seven Northeastern Cities (SNEC) in China. Questionnaires surveys were obtained from 56 137 children and adolescents aged 2–17 years. Influenza vaccination was defined as receipt of the influenza vaccine. We estimated air pollutants exposure [nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤1 μm (PM1), ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) and ≤10 μm (PM10)] using machine learning methods. We employed two-level generalized linear mix effects model to examine interactive effects between influenza vaccination and air pollution exposure on allergic respiratory diseases (asthma, asthma-related symptoms and allergic rhinitis), after controlling for important covariates.We found statistically significant interactions between influenza vaccination and air pollutants on allergic respiratory diseases and related symptoms (doctor-diagnosed asthma, current wheeze, wheeze, persistent phlegm and allergic rhinitis). The adjusted ORs for doctor-diagnosed asthma, current wheeze and allergic rhinitis among the unvaccinated group per interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM1 and PM2.5 were significantly higher than the corresponding ORs among the vaccinated group [For PM1, doctor-diagnosed asthma: OR: 1.89 (95%CI: 1.57–2.27) vs 1.65 (95%CI: 1.36–2.00); current wheeze: OR: 1.50 (95%CI: 1.22–1.85) vs 1.10 (95%CI: 0.89–1.37); allergic rhinitis: OR: 1.38 (95%CI: 1.15–1.66) vs 1.21 (95%CI: 1.00–1.46). For PM2.5, doctor-diagnosed asthma: OR: 1.81 (95%CI: 1.52–2.14) vs 1.57 (95%CI: 1.32–1.88); current wheeze: OR: 1.46 (95%CI: 1.21–1.76) vs 1.11 (95%CI: 0.91–1.35); allergic rhinitis: OR: 1.35 (95%CI: 1.14–1.60) vs 1.19 (95%CI: 1.00–1.42)]. The similar patterns were observed for wheeze and persistent phlegm. The corresponding p values for interactions were less than 0.05, respectively. We assessed the risks of PM1-related and PM2.5-related current wheeze were decreased by 26.67% (95%CI: 1.04%–45.66%) and 23.97% (95%CI: 0.21%–42.08%) respectively, which was attributable to influenza vaccination (both p for efficiency <0.05).Influenza vaccination may play an important role in mitigating the detrimental effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on childhood allergic respiratory diseases. Policy targeted at increasing influenza vaccination may yield co-benefits in terms of reduced allergic respiratory diseases.

Evidence from the past shows that pesticide use in populated areas may impact groundwater quality. The approval of herbicides such as diflufenican and glyphosate for use on paved and unpaved gravel surfaces in the European Union is based on their behaviour and fate in agricultural soils. However, this might be very different from their fate in gravel surfaces. We therefore conducted an outdoor study with 21 small lysimeters containing different gravel types and a sandy arable topsoil as control. The lysimeters were sprayed with a commercial product for gardening, containing diflufenican and glyphosate. The concentrations of the herbicides and their relevant degradation products in the outlet was followed for 19 months. Diflufenican, glyphosate and AMPA did not leach from any of the lysimeters. However, one diflufenican degradation product (AE-0) leached from two of the gravel types for more than a year and a second degradation product (AE-B) leached from all gravels for up to one year. Concentrations in the leachate peaked at 0.5–3 μg/L, with highest concentrations over the longest periods observed with rock chippings on top of the gravel. We conclude, that the different properties of gravel compared to those of agricultural soils may lead to very different herbicide leaching patterns but also that the leaching depends highly on the type of gravel and type of herbicide.

The increasing release of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) or their sulfidized forms into soils have raised concerns about their potential risks to soil ecosystems. Hence, there is a need for novel strategies to remediate metallic NPs pollution in soils. In this study, to explore the feasibility of using earthworm Eisenia fetida to manage soils contaminated with metallic NPs, we simultaneously investigated the chronic soil toxicities of ZnO NPs and ZnS NPs to E. fetida, and the effects of E. fetida on Zn extractability in soils amended with ZnO NPs and ZnS NPs. After a 28 d exposure, survival rate and weight loss of earthworms were not impacted by either ZnO NPs or ZnS NPs at a concentration of 400 mg Zn per kg soil. Further, while ZnO NPs activated earthworm antioxidative system, ZnS NPs resulted in significant alleviation of oxidative damage in earthworm. The presence of earthworms significantly decreased the bioavailability of Zn in ZnO NPs contaminated soil, whereas significantly increased the bioavailability of Zn in ZnS NPs contaminated soil. These findings implied that the earthworm E. fetida could play an important role in altering the mobilization of metals originating from metallic NPs in soils, which may further aid in the development of a method for the treatment of metallic NPs pollution in soils.

Plastic pollution is among the most pervasive stressors currently influencing the marine environment and affecting even the most remote areas. To date, there are still fundamental gaps in our understanding of the major pathways and fate of plastic debris in the oceans. Here we show that oceanic insular environments are important transitory repositories of small plastic items floating in the open ocean. Monthly monitoring of seven beaches over a three-year period demonstrate that beaches of the Azores islands with particular characteristics can capture significant quantities of fragments between 2 and 5 mm in length. The beach with the highest plastic loading rates was found to occasionally accumulate densities exceeding 15,000 fragments m⁻² on part of the backshore. However, a large portion of these fragments can be rapidly washed back into the marine environment. Detailed characterization of those plastic items revealed the typology and size distribution to be similar throughout the seven beaches and through the 33 months surveyed, suggesting a same and unique source. Our results show that these oceanic islands of the North-East Atlantic are under pressure of high quantities of fragmented plastic debris that probably entered the ocean many years ago.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are widespread and environmentally persistent chemicals that readily bind to particles in air, soil and sediment. Plastic particles, which are also an ubiquitous global contamination problem, may thus modulate their environmental fate and ecotoxicity. First, the acute aqueous toxicity of phenanthrene in adult Gammarus roeseli was determined with a LC₅₀ of 471 μg/L after 24 h and 441 μg/L after 48 h. Second, considering lethal and sublethal endpoints, effects of phenanthrene concentration on G. roeseli were assessed in relation to the presence of anthropogenic and natural particles. The exposure of gammarids in presence of either particle type with phenanthrene resulted after 24 and 48 h in reduced effect size. Particle exposure alone did not result in any effects. The observed reduction of phenanthrene toxicity by polyamide contradicts the discussion of microplastics acting as a vector or synergistically. Especially, no difference in modulation by plastic particles and naturally occurring sediment particles was measured. These findings can most likely be explained by the similar adsorption of phenanthrene to both particle types resulting in reduced bioavailability.

A multinational demersal longline survey was conducted on the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf over the years 2015 and 2016 to generate a Gulf-wide baseline of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in demersal fishes. Tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) were sampled in all regions of the Gulf of Mexico for biometrics, bile, and liver. Tilefish liver was also obtained from surveys in the northwest Atlantic Ocean for comparison. Liver tissues (n = 305) were analyzed for PAHs and select alkylated homologs using QuEChERS extractions and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Bile samples (n = 225) were analyzed for biliary PAH metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. Spatial comparisons indicate the highest levels of PAH exposure and hepatic accumulation in the north central Gulf of Mexico, with decreasing concentrations moving from the north central Gulf counterclockwise, and an increase on the Yucatán Shelf. Hepatic PAH concentrations were similar between the Gulf of Mexico and the northwest Atlantic, however, Tilefish from the northwest Atlantic had higher concentrations and more frequent detection of carcinogenic high molecular weight PAHs. Overall, results demonstrate that PAH pollution was ubiquitous within the study regions, with recent exposure and hepatic accumulation observed in Tilefish from both the Gulf of Mexico and northwest Atlantic.

Sertraline is a widely used antidepressant that becomes an aquatic pollutant through metabolic excretion and improper disposal. Determining the impact of sertraline on benthic microbial ecosystems is important for the transformation of river biogenic elements. However, the molecular initiating event induced by sertraline is more readily observed at higher levels, such as the individual or population level of larger organisms, and the effect is not pronounced in benthic organisms, which are directly involved in nitrogen transformation. Therefore, this study used DNA metabarcoding to analyze the effect of sertraline on the microbial ecosystem and material cycles in river sediment through the lens of a microbial food web. The presence of sertraline in the river sediment enhanced the mineralization capacity of nitrogen and increased the accumulation of nitrate in the sediment. Sertraline affected the structure of the microbial food web by stimulating different successions of bacteria and eukaryotes. A structural equation model revealed that sertraline affected the microbial food web model through top-down forces (predation) by reducing the trophic transfer efficiency from metazoans to protozoans. This effect resulted in decreases in the trophic transfer efficiency from protozoans to bacteria and increases in nitrogen mineralization capacity. This was followed by a gradual increase in the nitrification reaction under the action of nitrifying bacteria, increasing the threat to the ecological health of rivers. The results show that sertraline affects the material cycle of river ecosystems and emphasizes that the assessment of the ecological risks of sertraline needs to be considered from the perspective of the material cycle of ecosystems.

Supported carbon quantum dots (CQDs), used as fluorescent sensors for the detection of metal ions, have rarely been used to remove heavy metals from water. Nitrogen-doped CQDs immobilized in hydrophilic silica hydrogels exhibited a more superior sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Re(VII) and Cr(VI) than other metal ions, including Fe(III), Fe(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Mn(II). For the first time, low limits of detection (LOD) of 2.3 μM for Re(VII) detection and 65 nM for Cr(VI) detection were reported by a facile method. Based on the high selectivity of fluorescent silica hydrogels for Re(VII) and Cr(VI) detection, the removal of Re(VII) and Cr(VI) by graphene oxide (GO) in water was monitored with the hydrogels used as a turn-off fluorescent sensing platform. The consistent results of the sorption isotherms of each metal on GO, which were obtained from the fluorescence spectra and by UV absorption, further verified the possibility of monitoring metal removal by fluorescence detection. Remarkably, GO removed 1186 mg/g of Re(VII) but only 178 mg/g of Cr(VI). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that both Re(VII) and Cr(VI) formed stable bonds with silica hydrogels, confirming that the interactions between the metal ions and the substrate would promote the fluorescence quenching of the supported CQDs. On the other hand, Re(VII) interacted more strongly with the carboxyl groups of GO than Cr(VI). In addition, a real-time detection system was designed to alarm the service life of a GO filter used for Re(VII) removal.
