The effect of residual hydrocarbons in soil following oil spillages on the growth of Zea mays plants

Liquid hydrocarbon pipeline accidents, including leaks due to the illegal or unauthorized collection of petroleum from oil pipelines, are a widespread phenomenon that can lead to pollution that may negatively affect soil quality and plant growth. The aim of this study is to evaluate hydrocarbon uptake and accumulation in Zea mays plants grown on soil affected by spills of fossil fuels. The experiments were conducted in microcosm, mesocosm and field tests. The potential transfer of contaminants from soil to plant and their effects on plant growth were investigated. The results from both the laboratory and field experiments showed that the plants grew better in the uncontaminated soil than in the soil polluted by hydrocarbons. Despite their significantly lower aerial biomass, plants grown in contaminated soil did not show any significant differences in C > 12 concentration, either in shoots or roots, compared to the control plants. Thus, the decrease in plant yield might not be attributed to hydrocarbons accumulation in the plant tissues and may rather be due to a reduced soil fertility, which negatively affected plant growth.Under our experimental conditions, the hydrocarbons present in the contaminated soil were not absorbed by the plants and did not accumulate in plant tissue or in grains, thus avoiding the risk of them entering the food chain.

Penconazole is a widely used chiral triazole bactericide that may adversely affect the environment. It contains two corresponding enantiomers and there may be differences in toxicity between the isomers. Therefore, in this study, we exposed zebrafish embryos to different concentrations of the penconazole enantiomer to study the developmental toxicity and neurotoxicity of penconazole on zebrafish and the difference in toxicity between enantiomers. The results showed that penconazole exposure caused adverse effects on zebrafish embryos, such as autonomous motor abnormalities, heart rate slowing, and increased deformity, resulting in significant developmental toxicity. Meanwhile, also caused the zebrafish larvae to slow movement, the neurotransmitter content and nervous system related gene expression significantly changed, which proved that penconazole also caused neurotoxicity to zebrafish. Interestingly, our results also clearly show that (+)-penconazole is significantly more toxic to zebrafish than (−)-penconazole at the same concentration, whether it is developmental toxicity or neurotoxicity, which suggests that we should focus on (+)-penconazole more when conducting toxicological studies on penconazole.

The choice of sediment quality assessment methodologies can strongly influence assessment outcomes and management decisions for contaminated sites. While in situ (field) methods may potentially provide greater realism, high costs and/or complex logistics often prevent their use and assessment must rely on laboratory-based methods. In this study, we utilised static-renewal and flow-through ecotoxicology tests in parallel on sediments with a wide range of properties and varying types and concentrations of contaminants. The prediction of chronic effects to amphipod reproduction was explored using multiple linear regression (MLR). The study confirmed the considerable over-estimation of the risk of toxicity of contaminated sediments in field locations when assessments rely on the results of laboratory-based static and static-renewal tests. Improved prediction of toxicity risks was achieved using a combination of contaminant exposure measures from sediment and overlying water. Existing sediment and water quality guideline values (GVs) were effective for predicting risks posed by sediments containing mixtures of common metal and organic contaminants. For 17 sediments with paired data sets from static-renewal and flow-through tests, the best prediction of toxicity to reproduction was achieved using a 2-parameter MLR that included hazard quotients for sediment contaminants and toxic units for dissolved metals (r² = 0.892). The inclusion of particle size, organic carbon and acid-volatile sulfide did not improve toxicity predictions, despite these parameters being recognised as modifying contaminant bioavailability. The use of dilute-acid-extractable metal concentrations in place total recoverable metal concentrations did not improve the predictions. The study also confirmed that sediments existing within the estuarine and marine bays of Sydney Harbour pose significant risks of adverse effects to benthic organisms.

Phthalates are widely used as binders and plasticizers in industrial and consumer products but show diverse toxicity. We investigated the level of human exposure to phthalates in Beijing, one of the most densely populated cities in the world. In this study, 12 metabolites of phthalates were measured in 70 spot urine samples collected from Beijing residents from August 2017 to April 2018 using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. We found that metabolites of phthalates were ubiquitous in all urine samples. Total concentrations of phthalate metabolites ranged from 39.6 to 1931 ng mL⁻¹, with median concentrations were in decreasing order of children (371 ng mL⁻¹)> younger adults (332 ng mL⁻¹)> older adults (276 ng mL⁻¹). Mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP) was the predominant compound, and occurred at concentrations greater than those reported for people in other countries. The mean values of estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of ∑phthalate were 35.2, 10.3 and 10.9 ng (kg-bm)⁻¹ d⁻¹ for children, younger adults and older adults, respectively. EDIs of di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), di-iso-butyl phthalate (DiBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exceeded reference values suggested by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the European Food Safety Authority. When concentrations were normalized to volume or creatinine-adjusted, hazard quotients (HQs) for 40 of 70 participants exhibited larger HQs >1 for individual phthalates, which was indicative of potential for adverse effects. Thus, exposure to phthalates might be a critical factor contributing to adverse health effects in Beijing residents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to establish a pre-baseline level of urinary phthalate metabolites among residents in Beijing.

Plastic pollution has become a pressing issue due to its persistence in the environment. Smaller plastics are more easily ingested, potentially exerting greater influences on organisms. In this study, the effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (NP) on the toxic effects, bioaccumulation, biodegradation and enantioselectivity of ibuprofen (IBU) in algae Chlorella pyrenoidosa were explored. The influences on the growth rate, chlorophyll a, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (MDA) were evaluated after 96 h of exposure to a combination of polystryene NP (1 mg L⁻¹) and IBU (5–100 mg L⁻¹). The results indicated that the inhibitory effect of IBU on C. pyrenoidosa growth was alleviated in the presence of NP. For instance, the 96 h-IC₅₀ value for rac-IBU in the treatment lacking NP was 45.7 mg L⁻¹, and the corresponding value in the treatment containing NP was 63.9 mg L⁻¹. The co-exposure of NP led to a significant enhancement of T-AOC and slight reduction of ROS and MDA compared with the individual exposure (IBU) group, suggesting a decreased oxidative stress. In addition, treatment with NP led to a decreased bioaccumulation and accelerated biodegradation of IBU in C. pyrenoidosa and enhanced removal in the medium. The enantioselective toxicity, bioaccumulation and biodegradation of IBU were observed both in the absence and presence of NP. S-IBU exhibited a greater toxicity, and R-IBU was preferentially accumulated and degraded in C. pyrenoidosa. No interconversion of the two enantiomers occurred regardless of the presence of NP. This consequence implied that the influence of coexistent NP should be considered in the environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in aquatic environments.

Nightjars are considered human-tolerant species due to the population densities reached in strongly managed landscapes. However, no studies have been done evaluating metal-related effects on physiology, condition or fitness in any nightjar species. The main aim of this study was to evaluate how metal exposure affects physiology and condition in red-necked nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis) populations inhabiting three different environments in southeastern Spain: agricultural-urban area (n = 15 individuals), mining area (n = 17) and control area (n = 16).Increased plasma mineral levels (magnesium and calcium) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were observed in breeding females, and ALP was significantly higher in young birds due to bone growth and development. In the mining-impacted environment, nightjars showed decreased retinol (17.3 and 23.6 μM in the mining area and control area), uric acid (28.8 and 48.6 mg/dl in the mining area and control area) and albumin (16.2 and 19.6 g/l in the mining area and control area), probably impaired by a combination of toxic metal exposure and low prey quantity/quality in that area. Moreover, they showed increased plasma tocopherol levels (53.4 and 38.6 μM in the mining area and control area) which may be a response to cope with metal-induced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. Blood concentrations of toxic metals (As, Pb, Cd and Hg) were negatively associated with calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, ALP, total proteins and body condition index. This could lead to metal-related disorders in mineral metabolism and ALP activity that may potentially increase the risk of skeletal pathologies and consequent risk of fractures in the long term, compromising the survival of individuals. Further studies need to be carried out to evaluate potential metal-related effects on the antioxidant status and bone mineralization of nightjars inhabiting mining environments.

Potential risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments of a Japanese bay contaminated by carbon manufacturing plant effluent were evaluated by calculating toxicity units (TUs). TUs calculated from the measured whole-sediment concentrations (Cwhole) were often higher than or close to 1, signaling a possible toxicity concern to benthic organisms. In contrast, TUs based on the freely dissolved pore water concentrations (Cfree) measured by an ex-situ passive sampling method with polyethylene strips were 0.0007–0.005, much lower than 1, indicating no effect. We also found that the fractions of black carbon in sediments of the contaminated bay were significantly higher than those of reference sites. Overall, we conclude that carbon manufacturing plant effluent substantially increases Cwhole of PAHs in sediments but also increases the fraction of carbonaceous particles that strongly retain PAHs. As a combined result, bioavailable concentrations (as expressed by pore water Cfree) of PAHs do not increase as much as Cwhole. The results of this study indicate that ecotoxicological risks of PAH contamination by carbon manufacturing plants should be evaluated by directly measuring pore water Cfree instead of Cwhole.

Within the outline of air quality studies at metropolitan city, the mixing ratios of seven selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured during December 2015 (winter) at an urban site of Pune. The measurement of VOCs was conducted using a proton transfer reaction-quadrupole mass spectrometer (PTR-QMS). The study represents daily variability of ambient VOCs and their various associated emission sources. Diurnal profiles have differed from one VOC to another as the result of their different origins and the influence of different meteorological parameters (i.e. solar radiation, temperature) and planetary boundary layer height (PBL-H). The hourly mixing ratios of Oxygenated-VOCs (OVOCs) and aromatics were in the ranges of 0.6–29 ppbv and 0.13–14 ppbv, respectively with OVOCs accounted for up to 75% of total measured VOCs. The role of long-range transport from the clear Thar Desert and polluted Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) was observed during the episodes of 1–15 and 17–31 December 2015, respectively. VOCs showed the strong diurnal variations with peaks during morning and evening hours and lowest in the afternoon. In the evening period, high levels of aromatics coincided with the lowest OVOCs suggests the role of fresh vehicular emissions. Emission ratios of various VOCs as a function of temperature showed the role of different sources including the biogenic and photochemical production as well as the anthropogenic sources, respectively. The higher emission ratio of Δmethanol/Δacetonitrile at the study site suggests the long range transport of biomass burning plumes from the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) during the 17–31, Dec. 2015. In addition to the pattern of emission, the diurnal and day-to-day variations of VOCs were influenced by the local meteorological conditions and depth of planetary boundary layer (PBL-H).

Narrow city streets surrounded by tall buildings are favorable to inducing a general effect of a “canyon” in which pollutants strongly accumulate in a relatively small area because of weak or inexistent ventilation. In this study, levels of nitrogen-oxide (NO₂), elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) mass concentrations in PM₁₀ particles were determined to compare between seasons and different years. Daily samples were collected at one such street canyon location in the center of Zagreb in 2011, 2012 and 2013. By applying machine learning methods we showed seasonal and yearly variations of mass concentrations for carbon species in PM₁₀ and NO₂, as well as their covariations and relationships. Furthermore, we compared the predictive capabilities of five regressors (Lasso, Random Forest, AdaBoost, Support Vector Machine and Partials Least squares) with Lasso regression being the overall best performing algorithm. By showing the feature importance for each model, we revealed true predictors per target. These measurements and application of machine learning of pollutants were done for the first time at a street canyon site in the city of Zagreb, Croatia.

The emerging flame retardants pentabromobenzene (PBB) has been frequently detected in recent years and may pose exposure risks to wild animals and human beings. In this study, the inflation of posterior swim bladder of zebrafish larvae was used as an endpoint to study the developmental toxicity and putative mechanisms associated with PBB toxicity. Our results showed that embryonic exposure to PBB could significantly inhibit the inflation of posterior swim bladders. Reduced T3 levels and transcriptional changes of crh and pomc were observed in PBB treated zebrafish larvae at 120 hpf. However, key regulators of thyroid and adrenocortical system involved in the synthesis (tsh), biological conversion (ugt1ab, dio2) and functional regulation (trα, trβ, gr) showed no significant changes. Further data revealed that prlra was the only gene that was altered among the detected genes at 96 h post fertilization (hpf). At 120 hpf, the morphology of swim bladder indicated deflation in treatments at 0.25 μM and higher. In addition, the mRNA levels of anxa5, prlra, prlrb, atp1b2 and slc12a10 were all significantly changed at 120 hpf. Taken together, we suppose that embryonic exposure to PBB inhibited the inflation of swim bladder in zebrafish probably via prlra mediated pathways. The observed changes of thyroid and adrenocortical parameters might be indirect effects evoked by PBB exposure. Overall, our results provide important data and indications for future toxicological study and risk assessment of the emerging flame retardants PBB.
