Reduced fertility associated with fluid accumulation has been recognized for many years in broodmares. Fluid present in the uterus after ovulation is often associated with mare susceptibility to endometritis. Objective of this study was to determine amount of intrauterine fluid secretion and endometrial oedema in mares at the time of artificial insemination (AI), 6 h, 25 h, and 48 h after AI and at the time of ovulation. A total of 22 cycling light breed mares from MTT Agrifood Research, Ypaja, Finland, were used in the study. Relaxation of the cervix, the number and size of follicles, corpus luteum, and the degree of endometrial oedema were examined by transrectal palpation and ultrasonography every other day. According to the closing and opening time of the cervix which was regulated using Bivona catheter, mares were distributed into 3groups. Group A (n=7): immediately after artificial insemination (AI) the catheter was inserted into the uterus. After 25 h, the catheter was opened and the fluid drained. Group B (n=8): immediately after AI, Bivona catheter was inserted into the uterus. After 6 h and 25 h the catheter was opened and the fluid drained. Group C (n=7)-control group: no catheter was inserted into the uterus. According to our investigation, we concluded that the amount of intrauterine fluid accumulation (IUFA) in mares increased within 25 h after AI. Mares with delayed uterine clearance had a significantly larger amount of intrauterine fluid than mares with normal uterine clearance. Open cervix during oestrus period is important for adequate clearance of intrauterine fluid in mares. Opening of intrauterine catheter at 6 h post AI didn’t diminish intrauterine fluid accumulation at 25 h post AI.

The aim of the study was to analyze an occurrence of forelimb and hind limb conformation traits in the population of the Latvian warmblood carriage type broodmares accepted as appropriate for the breed’s genetic resources and an occurrence of these traits depending on the origin. The conformation traits of limbs were analyzed in the population of the Latvian warmblood carriage type’s broodmares accepted as appropriate for the genetic resources from 2004 to 2012 and registered in the Stud Book, the group consisted of 301 mare of which 104 mares had a description of the conformation in Stud Book or database. Based on common female ancestors the broodmares were divided in families, recognized as important for improving the breed, and other related groups. The quality of limbs in the population of broodmares included in genetic resources was compared to the quality of limbs in the population of their female ancestors. Good limb conformation was characteristic to 28.8% of broodmares. The most common conformation faults were toeing-in of forelegs and base-narrow position of forelimbs and hind limbs. The occurrence of conformation faults as sloping pasterns of forelegs and hind legs and sickle-hocks was rarer in nowadays population than in population of female ancestors. The occurrence of toeing-in of forelegs increased from 9.7% to 19.2%, a significant difference between contemporary population and ancestors was found (p is less than 0.05). A significant difference in limb quality between groups with different origins was not found.

In breeding of Latvian Warmblood breed carriage type horses Equus caballus one of major breeding objectives is producing of typical purebred animals with minimal influence of modern warmblood breeds. The aim of the study was to analyze the quality of Latvian Warmblood horse breed carriage and sport type mares included in the register of Latvian Horse Breeding Association broodmares and differences between types in valuation and quality of progeny. The data included 135 records from Latvian Warmblood horse breed mares having valuation both of conformation and performance. The data from 79 sport type and 56 carriage type broodmares were collected. The majority of mares in population (31.9%) had proportion 0 – 24.9% of Latvian warmblood purebred ancestors. The proportion of Latvian Warmblood purebred ancestors in the group of carriage type mares was high – 72.2%, while sport type mares – only 23.4%, a difference between groups was significant (p is less than 0.01). Sport type mares showed significantly (p is less than 0.05) better results in conformation and performance quality whereas carriage type broodmares had significantly higher count of daughters registered in Stud book. Comparison of breed types showed that groups did not differ significantly by height of withers and quality of progeny. Lower quality of conformation and performance of carriage type had to be explained by pedigree data as the main criteria for acceptance, also with older age of broodmares. For future the main goal has to be censorious licensing of best carriage type stallions and using young broodmares with higher quality of gaits and conformation for breeding purpose.

The objective of the study was to detect the difference of the conformation scores between dams and daughters in Latvian Warmblood horse breed. For this purpose the correlations and regression coefficient between conformation traits of broodmares and the same traits of their daughters were estimated. Data of Latvian Warmblood horse breed broodmares were analyzed. The horse breeding organisations’ evaluating data from 1995 till 2015 were analyzed. The data included conformation valuation of Latvian Warmblood horse breed dams (n = 423) and their daughters (n = 596) of different ages. An average in ten-point scale in the group of dams was 7.71 ± 0.04 for top line scoring, 7.33 ± 0.05 for forelimbs and 7.35 ± 0.05 points for hind limbs. An average of valuation points of their daughters was 7.51 ± 0.03 for top line scoring, 7.21 ± 0.04 for forelimbs and 7.21 ± 0.04 for hind limbs. A significant difference between valuations of dams and their daughters (p0.05) was found for all three conformation traits. Positive and low correlation was calculated between groups of dams and daughters for all three conformation traits. The results show that the relationship between conformation traits of dams and daughters was weak. Further studies are needed in order to estimate influence of broodmare quality to daughters, analyzing the latest data of progeny.
