Effect of maturation on the quality of large rainbow trout reared in Estonia

Dressing percentage and gonadosomatic index (GSI) of large (2-3 kg) rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), produced in Estonian fish farms were estimated. The dressing percentage and GSI did not depend on fish size, but there was a strong negative correlation (r = - 081, p0.001) between themselves. During maturation the flesh color decreased significantly. The male trout had the palest color (13 color card units), the color of fillets of females decreased with maturation from 15 to 14. The immaturate females had the brightest color (17 color card units) and the highest slaughter yield (mean dressing percentage 87%, mean fillet yield 68%). Due to deterioration of quality (smaller slaughter yield and pale color) the maturation of trout causes profit loss for fish farmers and thus, rearing of late maturing all-female strains is recommended.

The international community is placing a growing emphasis on developing local capacity as the key to alleviating poverty and hunger in the developing world. Although ensuring the effectiveness of a capacity building effort requires appropriate use of evaluation, few organizations have implemented a system for monitoring or evaluating the changes taking place during organizational development. In January 2000, ISNAR began an ambitious Evaluating Capacity Development project, which aimed to improve capacity development efforts in research and development organizations through the use of evaluation. This book explains how the project used an action learning approach, bringing together people from various countries and different types of organizations. As they conducted six evaluation studies over the course of three years, project participants learned a great deal about capacity development and the process of evaluation. The authors use examples and lessons drawn from the evaluation studies as a basis for making more general conclusions regarding how capacity development efforts and evaluation can help organizations to achieve their missions.

This article presents the results of studies on biological samples collected from 640 swabs taken from dogs and cats across various regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. These samples were part of a monitoring study on the spread of coronavirus among domestic animals. Total RNAs were isolated using the magnetic sorption method with the ALPREP kit and subsequently analysed with the ALSENSE-SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR kit. Real-time RT-PCR analysis revealed that 104 samples tested positive within 22–37 amplification cycles. These positive samples were then cultured in Vero cell lines to confirm the presence of the virus. The biological activity of the resulting virus-containing suspension was determined using the Reed-Muench method. During cultivation, one viral isolate with a biological activity of 5.83±0.08 lg TCID50/ml was obtained. A microphotograph of the virus was taken using an electron microscope to determine its size, shape, and structure, which confirmed its morphology corresponding to the Coronaviridae family. The data obtained further indicate that domestic animals can suffer from and carry coronavirus. It is becoming increasingly evident that the virus can infect and replicate in the organs of various farm and domestic animals.
