Peruvian organic agro-exports, climate change and food security

Abstract Although organic export agriculture is affected by climate change, it is an essential climate adaptation mechanism. The objective of this article is to examine the link between climate change, organic Peruvian agro-exports, and food security. Using Pearson's correlation and multiple regression methods, the study found that climate change as measured by air and seawater temperatures was related to Peruvian organic agro-exports in the period 2000-2022. There was also a strong association between organic agro-exports and food security both in Peru and globally. It is concluded that the prevalence of global undernourishment is directly affected by air and sea surface temperatures and that this phenomenon is inversely affected by Peruvian organic agro-exports; i.e., higher organic agro-exports increase food security. It is recommended that policymakers promote organic agro-exports as a climate change adaptation strategy in support of healthier diets for populations, global food security, and climate resilience.

Abstract: This article presents the findings of research conducted in a rural community located in Norte de Santander Department, Colombia, on farmers' representations of the impacts of climate change. The analysis of the behavior of temperature and average rainfall in the period 1985-2015 was put together concerning the local knowledge of the farmers. The approach was developed through 56 multiple choice questions surveys done to 144 producers intentionally selected from a group of 1,933 farmers, analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings indicate a broad opinion by farmers of the effects of climate change due to the gradual increase in temperature that causes changes in the bimodal system and intensity of rainfall; reduction in agricultural and livestock production, product quality and quantity; intensification of pest and disease attacks; reduction in water sources and water quality; extinction and migration of species of flora and fauna; and effects on the family’s comfort during work and rest hours, health and hygiene. Likewise, local strategies and the participation of public institutions in the mitigation and adaptation to climate change are evident.

Plant breeding through the development of seeds resistant to water stress or high temperature is an important adaptive strategy to cope climate change. In this way, by providing an analysis of adaptation to climate change using genetic breeding on Brazilian farms, this work aims to investigate how climate change will affect the adoption of genetic breeding and profitability of farmers. Temperature and rainfall projections for 2010-2099 time periods were used, considering different climate scenarios (A1B and A2), according to the 4th Assessment Report of IPCC (2007). A Treatment Effects model outlines the analytical framework in this study. Our results indicate the probability of adopting transgenic seeds will grow from 74% in the current period to 86% in 2020, 83% in 2050, and 81% in 2080. Farmers adopting this adaptation strategy will have higher profits. Land value tends to be higher in both climate scenarios in counties with cultivated areas using transgenic seeds. Farmers adopting this adaptation measure will be less exposed to adverse effects of climate change. We conclude that it is necessary to invest in adaptation strategies so that Brazil can overcome adverse effects of global climate change.
