Fruiting ability under glass depends on the ecological origin of the cultivars: the lower the latitude, the less is the efficiency of the floral organs especially during the shortest days of the year. The results already obtained tend to show that this phenomenon is linked to genetically determined differences in the water economy of the plants. Resistance to water flows is much lower in the varieties of northern origin (Japan and North China) than in mediterranean or tropical varieties. A differential sensitivity of the stomatal apparatus is one but not the only causal element. Differences in leaf posoity are also present. Transfer of 'northern' properties to a 'southern' genotype was partly achieved by selecting, at the 4-5 expanded leaves stage, the plants showing the highest transpiration in winter conditions. The four partly isogenic lines obtained through three backcrosses (interspaced by one or two selfing) show an improved ability to set fruits in winter cultivation, though they were never bred for this property. A case of partly maternal or cytoplasmic inheritance has been found
