Autumn and spring tillage for spring cereals

The effects on yields and soil conditions of spring and autumn harrowing were studied in five trials on ploughed and unploughed soil. The soil moisture content in spring was lower in ploughed than in unploughed soil. Autumn harrowing gave more rapid drying of unploughed soil in spring. Autumn harrowing of ploughed soil reduced the cereal yields 4%. On soil that was neither ploughed nor harrowed, there were yield reductions due to couch (Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski). Harrowing led to earlier grain ripening. Accumulation of available P and K and lower pH values were found in the upper horizon (0-10 cm) of unploughed soil.
