The effect of nitrogen fertilization levels (0, 120, 160 and 200 kg N per ha) and of pre-sowing tillage techniques: harrowing, scarifying, rotavating and ploughing to the depth of 6-8 cm and 10-12 cm on the sprouting dynamics and the number of plants in particular growth phases was determined. A significant decrease of the number of plants and inequality growth of their distribution in a row occurred under the effect of N fertilization applied at the rate of 200 kg N per ha. The highest density of plants and the least decrease of the number of plants in the period from thinning to harvest were obtained after additional rotavation to the depth of 6-8 cm and ploughing to the dept of 10-12 cm
