Sustenance fisheries in Ilocos Norte [Philippines]: management and exchange process

Many fishermen had limited capital resources in starting fishing operations. Given this existing condition, 51 percent of the samples started with an average initial capitalization of P385. Generally, fishing operations were characterized by markedly high production costs with motorized boat fishing; moderately high with non-motorized boat operation; and lowest with bamboo raft fishing. Among traders, costs and margins were expressed by the buying price as the cost of the product, and the price difference between buying and selling fish products as margins. The exchange processes between traders and their respective buyers were regulated by pick-up and delivery methods. Pricing of marine fish products at the fishermen level was more regulated by the prevailing price rather than other factors such as mark-ups, costs of production, etc. Good road conditions and transportation accessibility enhance the marketing flow of this
