The influence of planting density and nitrogen fertilization on the yields and quality of barley for brewery

This paper investigates mutual effects of the seed spacing and fertilization with nitrogen on the yield and quantity of brewer's barley, under agroecological conditions of Sumadija (SFRY). The experiment was carried out under production conditions. The seed spacing of 200, 300, 400 and 500 seeds per sq m, with fertilization with 60, 80 and 100 kg N/ha was investigated. Apart from the N fertilizer tested, 75 kg/ha of phosphorus and 50 kg/ha of potassium were used for fertilization. On the basis of the results obtained the following conclusions were drawn: -Fertilizing with 60 kg N/ha, the highest yield was achieved seeding 500 grains per sq m. -Fertilizing with 80 kg N/ha, the highest yield was achieved seeding 400 seeds per sq m. -Fertilizing with 100 kg N/ha, the highest yield was achieved seeding 300 grains. With further increase of the seed spacing, i.e. of the number of seeds, the yield decreased, being the lowest in the variant of seeding 500 seeds. -With all levels of N fertilizer and with the higher seed spacing, the share of the first-class grain and the absolute mass of the grain decreased. However, with 60 and 80 kg N/ha, the reduction of the first-class grains was relatively low with the seed spacing of 500 grains, compared with that of 200 grains, while with 100 kg N/ha this reduction was quite notable. The same was with the mass of 1,000 grains. -The seed spacing increased, with all doses of N fertilizer applied, the protein content in the grain increased and the starch content in the extract decreased.
