[Effects of the type of variety and vegetation space on the morphology of beet root, on successful machanized harvesting on the yield and quality of sugar beet]

This paper presents results of a comparative investigation of biological and technological properties of types of varieties in relation to the harvesting period and vegetation space. The investigation was carried out under production conditions. The following varieties were investigated: Maribo monova (a monogerm variety origination from Denmark), Al mona (a Yugoslavian monogerm variety) and NS poly zuca (as a typical representative of the sugar-bearing type). Among others, the following conclusions were drawn: -A high yield requires an optimum number of plants under certain weather conditions. -If crops are thinned, the reduction of the number of plants is lower, being 10-15%, sometimes even much lower. -The largest number of harvested roots is obtained in the vegetation space of 900 sq cm. -The diameter of most beets of all three varieties was 9-12 cm. -The root size was the most uniform in the vegetation space of 50 by 18 sq cm. If the vegetation space is broadened, the yield tends to decrease. Prolonged vegetation and broadened vegetation space cause a lower yield of the crowns. - Under Yugoslavian conditions, the content of noxious nitrogen increases between the first and the second harvesting. -In a broader vegetation space the sugar beet was invaded by fungi to a lower degree.
