The influence of trace elements on yield and quality of sugar beet under conditions of south Banat [Yugoslavia]

This paper presents results of investigating the influence of application of microelements (B, Mn and Zn) on the yield and quality of sugar beet, under the conditions of southern Banat (Yugoslavia). The investigation was carried out under production conditions, on smonitsa type of soil. This soil is characterized by the humus-accumulated horizon up to 45 cm of depth. Monofort and Carpo varieties were subject for this experiment. The following was determined: 1) The most significant increase of the yield of sugar beet, in comparison with other elements, was achieved by fertilization with B. Fertilization with Mn had a similar effect, but less notable. 2)The most significant increase with both varieties was achieved by application of the 3 elements combined, dosed 10 kg/ha each. 3) In the variants where the elements were applied separately, Mn exerted the greatest, and Zn the slightest influence on the sugar content. The best effect was achieved by application of all the 3 elements combined, dosed 10 kg/ha (1%) each. 4)The sugar content was higher in the year with heavier precipitation and with B, Mn and Zn applied. 5)The sugar content was highly correlated with the yield of roots. 6)The yield of sugar per unit of cultivated area depended on the yield of roots and on the sugar content, and B was the microelement exerting the greatest influence on it. Zinc did not influence the yield of sugar of Monofort variety, while the influence on the Carpo variety was slight. Significant increase of the yield of sugar per unit of cultivated area was achieved by fertilization with all 3 microelements.
