A preliminary survey was undertaken in order to isolate and identify phytoplanktons from pond soils of Bangladesh Agricultural Univeristy campus, Mymensingh. Soil samples were collected from four different cultivable perennial ponds located in different places of Bangladesh Agricultural University campus, Mymensingh, for study. Isolation of phytoplanktons was made following Chu's technique and identification was done under direct microscopic examination considering their morphological characters. Twelve different genera of phytoplanktons of which seven belonging to Cyanophyceae, three belonging to Chlorophyceae and two belonging to Xanthophyceae were identified. Among the identified genera Anabaena was found dominant in Cyanophyceae, Chlorella was found dominant in Chlorophyceae and Vaucheria was dominant in Xanthophyceae. Most probable number of phytoplanktons per gram of soil was also estimated which ranged from 1880 to 15300
