Chemical control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), and its effect on tomato yellow leaf curl virus

Laboratory and field experiments were conducted during 1978-80 to evaluate the effectiveness of organophosphorous, carbamate, pyrethroid and granular insecticides against the tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), vector of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). In the laboratory, foliar sprays with azinphos ethyl+azinphos methyl, oxamyl, chlorpyriphos and methomyl, and soil treatment with carbofuran, provided excellent control of adult whiteflies and completely prevented TYLCV transmission to treated tomato plants. In the field, best whitefly control was obtained with azinphos ethyl + azinphos methyl and oxamyl sprays applied at 3-4 day intervals from transplanting to the beginning of harvesting. Final incidence of TYLCV, however, was not substantially reduced, even though disease development was delayed, symptom severity was reduced and total fruit yield increased in comparison to the untreated check. Such yield increase, however, was not high enough to justify insecticide application in practice
