Note. Determination of the stevioside content in leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni

A method for the determination of the stevioside content in Stevia rebaudiana leaves is proposed. It is a modification from the ones described by Tanaka (Trends. Anal. Chem., 1/11, 1982, 246-248) and Metivier y Viana (J. Exp. Bot., 30/117, 1979, 805-810). The stevioside is separated from the other compounds by TLC, and determined by spectrophotometry. Different variables were studied: water and methanol extraction, mono and bidimensional chromatography, and different solvent systems. The better results were found by methanol extraction and monodimensional chromatography using chloroform/methanol/water (90:65:9)
