Microcomputer simulation of fermentation systems

This paper describes the application of a flexible simulation structure originally designed to solve dynamical systems, to fermentation problems as opposed to the use of standard, digital simulation languages such as CSMP or DSL/90. It is argued that such an approach removes the usual requirements of large computers and specific language compilers which can be cost prohibitive. The approach is pedagogically positive in the sense that the user may construct his own applications package using the basic modules defined, to suit the particular situation. The heart of the software design namely the numerical integrators are at present, written in FORTRAN to ensure familiarity and protability. The modules are now being tested using more efficient and structured programming languages such as C and PASCAL in the powerful UNIX operating system environemnt. A high productivity ethanol fermentation system has been simulated on a 16-bit microcomputer. The system comprises two fermenters in series; the first of which is modelled as a Continuous Stirred Tank Fermenter (CSTF) followed by a tubular fermenter which is modelled as a plug flow reactor. A recycle line connects the tubular fermenter to the CSTF. The simulation results reflect the true system behavior as found by experiments although it is emphasised that accuracy can be improved with the availability of better kinetic or process models
