Effects of CO2 enrichment and supplementary light on growth and flowering of poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.

The effect of carbon dioxide enrichment on poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) was studied with or without supplementary lighting during the fall. The plants were grown in daylit growth chambers or in greenhouse compartments at 21 degrees C. Additional carbon dioxide was given either during the first half or the whole cultural period. Additional carbon dioxide and light significantly increased the growth rate of the plants measured by dry weights. The increase was mainly due to heavier stems, more lateral shoots and larger leaf area. Plant height increased strongly by carbon dioxide enrichment and somewhat less by supplementary lighting. The number of flowering lateral shoots was enhanced by adding light, and by carbon dioxide application when supplementary light was applied. Time till flowering was reduced 1-2 weeks by light. Carbon dioxide enrichment delayed flowering one week when light was added but had some positive effects without light. In general carbon dioxide application during the whole cultural period gave larger effects than application only during the first half. Carbon dioxide application had a minor effect on percentage dry matter, number of leaves, specific leaf weight, and diameter of the inflorescence (the "star")
