1983
Carino, V.S. (University of the Philippines, Quezon City. Dept. of Zoology)
Methyltestosterone was orally administered to gonadally undifferentiated Tilapia nilotica at a dose of 50 mg/kg feed for 21, 32 and 42 day period. Sex ratios in andragen treated fish were significantly different (p=0.05) from the normal 1:1 ratio. All male population was observed in fish fed with the hormone diet for the 32 day period. The progeny of treated males bred with untreated females had a sex ratio of 3:2:1. There was no abnormality in gonad histostructive of hormone fed fish. Sexing through papilla examination showed effectivity of papilla inspection only for fry greater than 60 mm. A 17% error was observed in manual sexing of fry smaller than 60 mm.
