Optimal spatial arrangement and population levels in corn (Zea mays L.) and mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) strip intercropping

The best LER [land equivalent ratio] value over seasons (1.39) suggests that 2:4 spatial arrangement permitted the exploitation of high population density of corn (33,000 plants/ha of total intercropped area or equivalent to 66,000 plants/ha in full stand) intercropped with a low population density of mungbean (132,000 plants/ha of total intercropped area or 200,000 plants/ha in full stand). The yield of corn per ha increased with increasing plant population and were more favored by the 2:4 spatial arrangement. An adverse shading effect due to corn was observed in all the intercropped mungbean. Yield reduction per ha and per plant of the intercropped mungbean was 57% and 29%, respectively. Leaf area index (LAI) and total dry matter increased with increasing population levels in both crops, with the greater increase in the intercropped corn.
