Feasibility studies of utilizing sweet potato for animal feeds

Results showed that although fattening hog and layer duck performed better when fed with sweet potato-incorporated ration, the return cannot compensate for the cost of sweet potato meal used in the ration. In the case of broiler chicken and duck, results revealed that performance of these animals was not as efficient as when corn alone was used in the feed ration. It was more profitable for the farmer to sell his sweet potato as fresh tubers after harvest than to incorporate it in the feed ration of the animals. However, when the price of hog, broiler chicken and duck per kg liveweight and the price per dozen egg would increase to as much as 60% of their current farm level prices and the price of sweet potato per kilo would remain at P1.30, the farmer could realize higher return if he incorporates his sweet potato in the feed ration of hog at 25%, 37.5% and 50%; chicken and broiler duck at 20%; and layer duck at 30% substitution levels. Utilizing it for animal feed is advisable only for cells/non-marketable or mechanically damaged tubers. Highly selected are best sold as fresh tubers for food
