Agronomic and morphophysiological responses of different cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties to water deficits

Results showed that UPL-C1 and Ezam (76)4 had higher leaf water potential compared to the other varieties. There was an apparent decrease in leaf water potential as water was withheld for days and at mid-day. Generally, the stressed plants had higher stomatal resistance than the control plants. Among varieties, UPL-C1 exhibited the lowest stomatal resistance while EA Makoka 72 and Rasam (76)55 had the highest stomatal resistance. However, as the stress duration was prolonged, AM-24 (76)1 became the most sensitive in terms of stomatal response. Water stress significantly reduced plant height. Among varieties, UPL-C1 was the shortest. Generally, flower production was greatly reduced by water stress. The greatest and lowest number of bolls were obtained from UPL-C1 and AM-24 (76)1, respectively. Non-stressed plants showed higher number of boll retention. The highest yield was obtained from stressed plants while the lowest was obtained from plants subjected to 16-day stress
