Non-conventional protein sources for cassava-based rations, 1: replacement pullets

The feeding value of cassava leaf meal (CLM) and hydrolysed feather meal (FTM) in cassava-based rations for 3 strains, heavy, medium and light, of prelaying pullets was evaluated. cassava leaf meal was added at the levels of 20 or 15 percent whereas the FTM was being added at 5 or 3.8 percent of the high - or low-protein rations, respectively. Whenthe pullets reached 18 weeks of age, it was found that FTM was a superior source than CLM. This was due to a better amino acid complement to cassava. SBM rations was obtained by adding FTM rather than CLM. Both types of rations required proper supplementation of methionine, The heavy strain responded sensitively to protein sources than did the light or medium strains. Decreasing of dietary protein by two percent from normal did not adversely affect the bird's performance, in fact, it reduced feed cost required per pullet by 10 percent.
