Varietal difference of rice in absorbing zinc from soil of low zinc availability [in Thailand]

The varietal differences of rice plant in absorbing zinc from the soil low in zinc availability was tested using, for the first investigation, 6 recommended Thai rice varieties namely, RD1, RD6, RD7, RD15, Neow San-patong and a promising line RD1'69 NF U-G6-6. The paddy soil was Ubon Series collected from Ubon Rice Research station, having pH=4.8 and the extractable Zinc by DTPA=0.6 ppm. With levels of zinc application, the zinc content in rice plant of 6 varieties were arranged as follows: at 20 days after seeding, RD7RD1'69 NF U-G6-6RD1RD6Neow San-patongRD15 and at maturity RD1'69 NF U-G6-6 RD7 RD1 Neow San-patong RD15 RD6. Zinc content in plant increased with increasing rates of zinc application. The optimum rate was 5 micron grams Zn/gm soil. The results showed that RD15, RD6 and Neow San-patong varieties gave better grain yield than the others. With no zinc application, RD15 had a considerable zinc content in plant and gave good grain yield as compared to the other varieties. There is indication that RD15 is likely to be a suitable rice variety for paddy soil low in soil zinc and in particular when there is no additional zinc fertilizer to NPK application. RD6 and Neow San-patong showed similar results. More rice varieties should be carefully tested for more information and help the confident recommendation that the selection of appropriate rice variety for particular rice growing area by means of their mineral feeding power as well as the other characteristics
