Ecology of sorghum shoot fly (Atherigona soccata Rondani) (Diptera: Muscidae)
1985
Snit Tongsanga
Results of the study showed that adult shoot fly laid its eggs mostly on the underside of the 2nd and 3rd leaves respectively The newly laid eggs were white in colour, averaging 1.30+0.17 mm. in length and 0.25+0.02 mm. in width. Differences among larval instars was observed on body length, structures of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton and shape of the posterior spiracles. More pupae were found in the soil around the base than inside of the stem. The spatial pattern of egg distribution in the initial laying was randomed. Optimum sample size (number of plants) for the estimation of egg was found to be depended on the density, index of aggregation of eggs and the level of CV(X) to be tested. The average percentage of plants with dead heart throughout the period of study was 46.5+3.6. Correlation between the amount of rain and percentage of dead heart was highly negative (r=-0.75; P0.01). Formula for the correlation between the age of seedling and percentage of dead heart was as follows: Y
