Analysis of mercury, cadmium and lead in stream water of various land use patterns at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station (SERS) [in northeastern Thailand]

An analysis of three heavy metals: mercury, cadmium and lead, was determined in the stream water and sediments of three different types of land use pattern namely: natural dry-evergreen forest (Huay Wanasart), shifting area (Huay Tayoo) and cultivated area (Huay Namkhen). Results showwed that the highest annual average content of mercury and lead in the stream water were found at Huay Nakhen, having 0.117 and 7ppb, respectively; while the highest annual average cadmium content (0.228 ppb) was analyzed at Huay Wasanart. In contrast, the lowest annual average mercury content (0.092 ppb) was found in this land use patterns. In sediment analysis of mercury, cadmium and lead content were highest at Huay Wanasart (108 ppb Hg, 5.3 ppb Cd and 54 ppb Pb) and lowest at Huay Namkhem (42 ppb Hg; 1.5 ppb Cd and 24ppb Pb). The amount of mercury, cadmium and lead obtained in both stream water and sediments of various types of land use were lower than the standard values of the World Health Organization. Thus, the presence of heavy metals such as: mercury, cadmium and lead could be attributed to the natural contribution not to the impact of existing land use activities
