Study on mercury content in stream water and sediment from various altitudes of Ping and Wang River Basins [Northern part of Thailand]

In general, the annual average of mercury content in stream water and sediment were not correlated to the altitudes. Except that the mercury content in stream water was inversely correlated and statistically significant for Mae Taw subbasin. (r = -0.915, = 0.01). The mercury content in sediment were directly proportional to the altitudes for Mae Khuang subbasin (r = 0.901, = 0.01) and Mae Chang subbasin (r = 0.938, = 0.01). The annual average of mercury content in stream water and sediment were higher during the wet period than dry period. This type of relationship did not exist for Mae Mon-Mae Suai subbasin. Based on the chemical analysis, the mercury content in stream water and sediment of subbasin mentioned above was not higher than the standard value of drinking water given by World Health Organization and lower than other important rivers in Thailand, respectively
