The quality of the Adriatic sea was relatively high until recently, and now it is endangered by the industrial pollution from the coast, ships, and some from of exploitation and unpurified wastage of cities and tourist places. Because of the insufficient manuring of soil and intensive exploitation there is a sudden decrease of organic constituents of cultivated soils. The soil in greater areas has been polluted with biocides, municipal and industrial wastage. On the other hand, a great amount of money has been dedicated to the drainage of swamp biotops and their cultivation which, in some cases, is biologically and economically unacceptable. The content of pesticides in the majority of foods does not excede the limits of tollerance but occasionally there are still high values of insecticides from the chlorified carbohydrates and organo-phosphate compounds. The content of toxic metals and non-metals is in 10-15% of the analysed foods above the recomended limits of tollerance. The use of the uncompletely investigated additives in food represents a special problem.
