[Three years of intercropping in a Pinus elliottii var. elliottii plantation on soils of complex N 9 (Ultisols) ]

Field trials were conducted to study the influence of intercropping on Pinus elliottii var. elliottii. Intercropping practices were carried out during three consecutive years on a Ultisol red soil, at Cuartel Rio Victoria, Misiones, Argentina, with the following treatments in a new installed Pinus plantation. First: soybean during three years; Second: corn during three years; Third: corn the first year and soybean the remaining two years; Fourth: mechanical weed control in the total area; Fifth: mechanical weed control only arround the pinus trees. The pinus were planted at 4m. x 1,25m (2000 trees/ha.) density. The result showed that the worst growth of pinus was with partial control on weeds. On the other hand, the pinus showed increases in height and diameter with intercropping (corn and soybean) and with weed control treatments. The yields of annual crops were the same than two average in the surrounding area and they did produce an income that covered the cost of planting and achieved a net return.
