Reaction of sugarcane lines to Pseudomonas rubrilineans

Twenty varieties/lines of sugarcane; ISD 1/53, ISD 2/54, ISD 9/57, ISD 16, L. Jaba-C, Co 975, Co 1158, BO 70, BO 71, I-18/74, I-60/74, I-96/74, I-106/74, I-45/74, I-59/74, I-21/75, I-29/75, I-45/74, I-59/75 and I-79/75 were inoculated with a bacterial suspension of 5 x 10(7) bacteria/ml of Pseudomonas rubrilineans using the hypodermic syringe inoculation method. Lines 1-20/75 and 1-59/75 showed symptoms of red stripe in the second and third weeks, respectively, while all other varieties/lines showed symptoms in the very first week following inoculation. Top rot began to develop at the end of second week and ceased to develop further at the end of fourth week when there was 30% infection in ISD 1/53, 20% in Co 975 and BO 70; 15% in BO 71 and I-21/75; 10% in ISD 2/54, ISD 9/57, L. Jaba-C, I-59/74 and I-29/75 and 5% in Co 1158, I-106/74, I-45/74 and I-79/75
