Comparative study of seedling growth in four varieties of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in relation to salinity [in Bangladesh]

Seedling growth of four wheat cultivars (Anando, Balaka, Inia and Sonalika) were investigated at different concentrations (0.20, 100 and 200mM) of NaCl salinity under laboratory conditions. Water content of shoot, fresh/dry weight of shoot was found to increase in 20mM concentration followed by the control but gradually decreased with further increase of salinity level (i.e. at 100 and 200mM). Significant decrease of both dry weight, shoot and root length with the increase of salinity at 200mM and also to a lesser extent at 100mM was ecologically disadvantageous. The percentage of dry matter production was highest in Anando followed by Balaka, Inia and Sonalika. Sodium and calcium content of all the cultivars generally increased progressively with salinity.
