Observations on the fecundity of silver jew, Johnius argentotus from the Bay of Bengal [in Bangladesh]

The fecundity of Johnius argentotus (Houttuyn, 1782) was estimated to be 109,848 to 1196,980 for a size range of 31.0 to 46.5 cm length. The relationships of fecundity to total length, body weight, gonad weight and average ova diameter were calculated. Relationships, i.e., total length-gonad weight and body weight- gonad weight were also computed by regression equation. There was a significant variation in ova diameter in intraovarian eggs. However, the mean diameters of ova in the right and left lobes or in different regions of the lobe were found to be equal by statistical analysis. The fish spawns intermittently from the months of May to December.
