Survey of Northern Ireland seed potato stocks for assessment of bacterial soft rot

In a survey of thirty-two stores, situated in six areas of Northern Ireland, where most seed potatoes are produced, soft rot of tubers, caused by Erwinia carotovora subsp, atroseptica and E. carotovora subsp. carotovora was not observed at an extensive level. but rotted tubers were found sporadically in the piles or boxes in all stores, visited. This investigation indicated that only E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica is associated with blackleg plants and 96% of the isolates from soft rot tubers were either E. carotovora subsp, atroseptica or E. carotovora subsp. carotovora. Of this isolates 61% were considered to belong to the E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) group and remaining 39% belonging to the E. carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc) group. Most Eca and Ecc isolates react exactly as predicated to the biochemical and physiological tests. In serological test it was observed that the Ecc group is more heterogenous for antigenic characteristics than the Eca group.
