Replacement of soybean meal by broad bean or common vetch grain in lamb and kid fattening diets

Three feeding and three digestibility trials were carried out with intensively fattened lambs and kids to study the possibility of replacing soybean meal in fattening diets by broad bean (Vicia faba) or common vetch (Vicia sativa) grain. Growth rate, feed intake and feed conversion rate of lambs of kids were similar when soybean meal was replaced partly or completely by common vetch or broad beans. Digestibility of the diets was also similar within each trial. It is concluded that broad beans and common vetch can replace soybean meal and a substantial part of the cereal grain without any adverse effect on the performance of lambs or kids
